Then a Snow cutscene. No gameplay, just a cutscene. Because why would I want to actually PLAY as the guy I just got Shiva summons on, right? I feel like these Snow/Serah flashbacks, as I've said before, would've worked well as like, a quick introduction to the game to help us get invested in Serah. But again, that's just me. Not sure why Snow is so willing to help "hunt l'Cie", but um, yeah. Here we go.

Just beat some weird spinny boss thing and unlocked ANOTHER crystal grid level. Of course, since I already maxed out my grid way early, I had a bunch of unspent CP that I could just blast right through the whole thing, maxing out Hope and Lightning once again.

So yeah...not only is the design of this forest extremely linear, but they've also thrown in unnecessary impediments to progress. I HAVE to kill enemies in order to move forward, rather than allowing me to at least TRY to bypass them. Which would be fine if I could like, one or two-turn KO them. But I can't do that.

Alright, I know it's a common complaint about this game, but this forest level is the first time I've really felt like I'm just walking in a straight line. Sure, the power plant was a straight line in practice, but it felt more open and more like I had to backtrack in order to unlock everything. This? This is literally just walking in a line, fighting easily-dispatched groups of enemies (granted, I feel like THIS is where I ground out my CP the first time I played through the game, rather than back at the Vile Peaks), without even a Wheatley to open and get loot.

And that's the end of Disc 1. Watching these flashbacks...I feel like this game REALLY shouldn't have begun in medias res. Like, I might actually give a shit about Serah and the fact that she turned to crystal...if they hadn't forced that scene on me so early in the game. Hell, I wouldn't even mind the flashbacks if they were all leading to an ultimate goal of getting to Serah in a chapter or two. But seriously, starting the game with her...yikes.

Alright, so I just powered up some power plant or something, and let me tell you...fighting these Pulsework guys STILL sucks. Sazh and Vanille just don't have the strength (or versatility of moveset) to beat these guys quickly, and now I'm getting battles with two or more Pulsework soldiers all the damn time.

Okay, so this zone? Best music in the game thus far. Jazzy trumpet is always good to eliciting a fun vibe. The bombs in this version of FF are actually kinda cute, too. Also, loving that all the grinding I did with Lightning/Hope saved up points for Sazh/Vanille too. I was able to just max out their skills right off the bat (though neither of them had a role level up or anything like that...yet.)

So after trying out Odin for the first time, everyone is tired and falls asleep. Hope starts dreaming about his fine-ass mommy, and Lightning doesn't COMPLETELY hate dragging him around. Guess she's a big ol' softie after all. Meanwhile, we switch to Sazh, who apparently foresaw the rise of Donald Trump. He says that old people are afraid of what they don't know and are afraid to learn. Sounds so topical. Sadly topical.

Anyway, knowing the truth about Vanille's story makes all these "Pulse l'Cie should all be destroyed" conversations all the sadder. Because she's clearly upset, but keeps having to force that hyperactive happy attitude to keep herself from breaking down.

Just did an annoying minigame. They give you nine shots to sweep away 43 enemies, but your mech is so big you're likely to stomp them by accident, thus ruining the chance at a perfect 999 gil. Still, I got 300 gil, which is okay. I guess. And a Spark Ring because at least I killed all the enemies. Still..999 gil doesn't sound like a lot, but it would've been pretty sweet.

My theory is that Poke grew up with Renaissance Era Disney, and fell in love with the designs of Ariel and Belle. He then decided that because he liked their designs, therefore they had to be good characters. Then when future female characters came along with more agency and personality (who always didn't appeal to Poke from a visual perspective), who began to establish themselves as popular characters. Perhaps even more popular than Belle. Thus, there's an element of jealousy that Belle, who was once lauded as a strong female lead (though in retrospect, she really is just a trophy being battled over by Beast/Gaston), is usurped by an indisputably strong female lead in Mulan. In a way, Poke/Belle is like Cersei and Mulan is Margaery.
