Now, I've kind of flopped, but I can still pick up Math fairly well. I think my issue is more motivation than anything else. Like. I get math, I do well at it. I probably know more math than most of these people in my class (the fact that I'm taking senior/graduate level courses as a junior notwithstanding). But it's so hard to motivate yourself through depression. I'm getting better at it but it's almost like each time I get a bit better, start to develop a habit, find that glimmer of light, BOOM something else crops up. >_> I mean, I doubt I'll fail. I'll probably be A-B in my math classes this semester if for no other reason than I read the textbooks before the semester started (yes, I'm that kinda nerd that reads the texts before the year starts, I love math), but my drive is near-zero most of the time. And of course then guilt compounds onto all of that because these professors are so amazing and here I am basically curling up in bed and missing half my classes sometimes. :/ --- Maybe I'll put something here one day. |

My English Comp I instructor is the one who put her faith in me and got me to graduate as highest honors. I loved my speech instructor and helped him after class with some things here and there. My economics instructor was a brilliant man who had helped with issues down the road. Heh, I know what that's like, for the most part my teachers loved me in high school. (Still don't know why. I was a random nerd that had little to no personality until senior year. >.> My Spanish/Physics teacher loved me especially but I think that was because I was on the science quiz bowl team she administrated and I basically pulled the entire team.) Sayoria posted... I mean, my CC was full of awesome teachers. Just so many great ones, I loved it. Yeah, I feel you here in college. Granted, there have been a few really, REALLY bad ones - my linear algebra professor last year focused way too much on calculation and too little on intuition; my numerical methods professor this year barely even knows what the fuck she's doing (she literally cancelled class early today because she didn't know how to explain a topic in the book >_>). Most of my professors have been great though. Moreso on the physics end of things though than the math, or the liberal arts stuff I've taken for GE requirements. My differential equations professor was pretty good though, and I like my foundations of math (which is just set theory, really) professor this semester. Both have a healthy sense of humor and a certain relaxed nature that just makes the class a lot more fun to deal with. I honestly thought it'd be more like high school going into this mess - boring teachers unmotivated by anything but a salary (only one teacher - ONE - in my entire K-12 experience seemed to give a damn), focused moreso on making us fill out worksheets and read textbooks and regurgitate material for its own sake than actually ... you know. Learning and helping to retain knowledge. I especially expected this when I learned that some researchers/professors/etc. at universities tend to be forced to teach classes when they've hit a dry spot in terms of their publication/research stuff, which made me think they'd be even less motivated ... but most of these guys seem to love it. Sayoria posted... Student Life was awesome. Sayoria posted... I always try to talk to my instructors and get to know them more on a personal level. It always breaks the ice nicely and I always try to show how hard I want to succeed in the class. God I should get more involved in stuff like that but I'm so damn shy. Two things in particular have been getting at me lately: - My college is accepting undergrad papers for publication as independent research. There are a couple of ideas I've been fooling around with in my head that I'd like to mess with more formally, but you have to contact a teacher/professor, and ... blah. A friend of mine really likes this one idea I've been messing with but almost the entire premise of it was debunked (since part of it was a proof in my set theory homework, so RIP in utility) but it's still neat. - Apparently there's a math club now? I'd love to get in on that but ... being social. o.o Sayoria posted... He even stretched his rules for me as to let me take the MIDTERM home where everyone else in class had to do it in class. xD lmao nice. --- Maybe I'll put something here one day. |

I would be in my Econ class sitting there and my Spanish instructor from my first semester would make his walk around the building. He would come into the room and he'd be all "Hey Autumn! How's everything going?" .... He was a sweet man. He would tell me that his current classes wouldn't be doing the work and how he missed my class. Far before anyone else would poor in. :) I was pretty similar to you my first semester of college, but the past couple years I've been pretty dead inside and it's a wonder I get out of bed. What makes it weird is some of my professors seemed to legitimately miss me - even though I barely talk in class, I'd think I'm just a face in the crowd. One time my astronomy professor noticed I'd been absent for like a week - and this dude was an awesome professor, I loved his class a lot, easily in my top three teachers ever, I just had hit a REALLY rough patch - and actually decided to check in on me. Made me feel really guilty for missing his class. Same for my astrophysics professor last year, though I missed a bit less of his class his lectures were always top-notch and entertaining and the intuition he gave us was amazing. This was a 300-level course I was taking as a sophomore for some reason, too. We get to this part where we'd need to know special relativity to get by but nearly no one had taken the class and he managed to dance his way around that fact and still explain it without delving deep into a months-long series on special relativity - that really blew me away because in my experience a lot of teachers/professors are very limited or restricted on how they teach so that he could totally ditch an entire class' worth of knowledge really impressed me. One random thing I noticed going through high school, too, was my class was always "that good class" like yours were. Like I had this one teacher for Algebra II and Precalculus two consecutive years. The next year I had to do online stuff for AP Calculus and apparently the same teacher who was normally at least competent with her job had completely dropped the ball so I was tutoring the Algebra II/Precalculus students somewhat during my spare time in classes (mostly during Spanish II - most students took that junior year not senior year like me, and juniors typically took Algebra II or Precalc). Apparently things only got worse throughout the high school according to my younger sister after my class graduated. >_> /random rant --- Maybe I'll put something here one day. |
