And I didn't think I could be more glad she's not president.

Though to be fair, it is indeed pretty common in the deep south. They used to bus prisoners over to LSU to do manual labor. And don't even get me started about Angola.

For what it's worth, my experience mirrors what COVxy said. I haven't really seen any of the white, straight male bashing. I haven't seen widespread "safe spaces." I haven't seen North Korean style propaganda blasted on loud speakers across campus about the oppression of the patriarchy.

I've encountered forms of the former two, but the loudspeaker thing seems like an exaggeration. Then again, I haven't been to the coastal universities where this insanity seems to have hit critical mass.

A friend of mine graduated from Evergreen last year and had little nice to say about it.

This. All of this.
The left is having their tea party moment and it's fucking ugly.

True, but

Hell a few years ago, I remember people calling straight people "breeders" in a derogatory way.

I always saw that as banter. It's nothing compared to the "everyone is a racist/sexist/homophobe/transphobe" mentality that's rampant these days.

I will fight for your right to live how you want, no matter how statistically destructive it is, but don't you dare look twice at me and put down how I choose to live.

This, really. Though I don't believe the incentives should be distorted to where it's possible to live destructively without accountability - that is to say, where taxpayers increasingly take up the slack for it.

supporting a left-leaning third party is the same as taking away support for the democratic party, which is the same as increasing the margin of support in favor of the republican party. so congratulations, in your refusal of taking part in the third-party system, you have only reinforced it more, just like everyone who votes third-party, and even worse, on the side you were most opposed to. i don't like it either, but that's how it is.

If a party is not responsive to the concerns of its voters, it is not entitled to their vote.

There's far more integrity in abstaining from voting for a global corporatist warmonger that peddles short-term concessions if you're against global corporatist trade agreements and warmongering. There's also a pragmatic angle - a party that loses must reconsider its platform and candidates to better suit the needs of the people.

I don't care for progressive domestic policy anymore, but I sincerely believe its voters deserve precisely what they believe in from the party, not what the political machine wants them to believe in (or at least vote for).

I identified as a liberal before I saw throughthe two party bs that America has going on. I don't know how much of it is my views on capitalism shifting or the shift of the Democratic Party but I do straight up identify as a leftist now and consider mainstream democrats basically equivalent to republicans.

I considered myself a leftist until my readings made me aware of the astronomical social/economic gains made by black America in the first half of the 20th Century in spite of the vitriolic racism of the time, and the catastrophic impact progressive federal policy has had on that trajectory since the 1930s-1960s. And it was indeed a dress rehearsal for the rest of society.

The two-party bs and the phenomenon of manufactured consent in the political realm is very real though.

You're correct it's not the be-all-end-all, nor was it intended to be implied.

There are lots of other policies that don't make sense to me. That's just one for which there can be no ambiguation. There are lots of economic right-wing policies I don't agree with either such as increased defense spending.

I don't agree 100% with left wing candidates and I think anyone who seriously attempts to argue that they do is being a moron.

Furthermore, it looks as though politics immediately become polarized regardless of what the actual issue is. If you read the text of the TPP, for example, it reads like a republican's wet dream, but because Barack Obama was in favor of it, Trump kills it immediately.

Trump's criticism of international trade agreements is nothing new, and it's a pretty consistent position of his dating back to when he was a Democrat.

Defense spending is, for lack of words, dumb given how much is already spent on it, but it's somewhat understandable from a Friedmanian standpoint (government spending should only be on roads, military, and perhaps education.)

The polarization is perhaps a byproduct of the growing culture gap between the urban/coastal and rural/inland areas. Policies that may benefit one demographic may hurt the other and vice versa, and they vote with utter disregard for this. Plus the policies they advocate may hurt themselves as well, and there's also a good chance the politicians won't even follow through with what they promise.

What can be said for certain, though is that left and right doesn't really mean anything anymore in the USA. Yesterday's left are today's Greens/Berniefolk; yesterday's right are today's Libertarians and perhaps Trumpists. The establishment Democrats and Republicans are on a bizarre dimension of their own.

Abortion is not the end-all-be-all of conservatism, and quite frankly its outright banning is only advocated by the religious subset of the right. Please keep in mind, the majority of of Nixon's court nominees were in support of the Roe v. Wade decision.

A lot has changed since Nixon. "Mainstream" conservatism has shifted over the past 40 years every bit as much, if not more, than mainstream liberalism. Nixon also created the EPA and was a fan of a universal basic income. Good luck finding a self-described conservative who agrees with that today.

Traditional American Conservatism's core ideal is small government and fiscal responsibility, and that was unfortunately lost in the party decades ago. That doesn't mean self-proclaimed (and non-self-proclaimed) conservatives of this type don't exist -- the government just hasn't been particularly responsive to their concerns, as it's an existential threat to the kinds of power the government and its dependents have.

Some older people will adapt to the new left, but for the most part, old rich white dudes don't vote right-wing because they're rich or white or men, it's because they're old and unable to adapt to the new progressive politics.

Or perhaps conservatism just makes more sense with life experience. Even older die-hard Democrats have conservative tendencies when it comes to their own backyards, so to speak.

there is literally nothing in my life's experience that tells me that banning abortions makes sense in any way.

A liberal 3-5 years ago, I felt like it went off the deep end.

An utter lack of nuance, ideological tropes with no basis in empirical reality, name-calling instead of arguments / listening to the other side, and an utter refusal to call out "liberal" politicians that did the same things as "conservative" politicians. The fetishism for "progress" regardless of the cost, and without asking questions. The silencing, intimidation, and general damning of those who dare question the ideological zeitgeist. The advocacy for expansion of government to fix issues created by expansion of government.

I still consider myself fundamentally liberal in that I root myself in enlightenment ideals rather than the alternative for the most part, but I cannot in good conscience call myself a progressive, leftist, or especially Democrat.

When businesses and other institutions participate in "progressive" forms of segregation, they re-legitimize all forms of segregation, which people fought, bled, and died to put an end to in the past. Public policy evolves to adapt to changes in the status quo, regardless of what it may be.

Maybe if low-income 18-24 year olds were legally able to competitively negotiate their own wages in order to get a foot in the door at places that would otherwise not hire them due to the cost of the value of their skill level at the onset, there would be no need for job training programs.
