I think Venezuela is a very pertinent topic. It's been a while since we saw an old-fashioned dictatorship in South America. I'm concerned for the effect this could have on trade as well as migration; with food shortages and riots, people are fleeing, and for good cause.

One of the Blizz devs hinted over at reddit that a card they're revealing on wednesday will put a hurt on either jades in general or maybe just jade idol.

This game really needs a card like Magic's Nevermore. It's a super specific sideboard tech enchantment that just says "name a card, it can't be played".

I would name Ice Block or Alexstraza every game on general principle, even against non-mages.

I really think this game would be less frustrating if we had a side board. Some way to let decks that have an opposing deck they're really weak against, a fighting chance.

Yeah, but then you would need to switch Ranked matches to Bo3, which goes against the "pick up, play, and go back to work" modularity that makes HS such a popular mobile game.

Okay. Finally. We're done with this shit. Moving on to the block everyone predicted.

#20: Masquerade Block

This block suffered from a severe case of "What the hell are we trying to do with these sets?" Mechanics and themes were tried and abandoned. Storylines were at once rushed and then dragged out for no reason. While the previous sets had poor ideas and poor execution, Masquerade had too many ideas and no execution at all. Except for Rebels! (This wasn't a good thing.)

That said, I think WotC learned a lot from Masquerade, which is more than can be said for the other blocks. We'll get into more details in the next entry.

Awesomest Card: Donate



Even more than hosers, I love cards that initially look like "Why on Earth would I play this?!" Donate was one of the first in this category. You play permanents in your deck because you want to use them. Your opponent plays removal in their deck to deny you the ability to use your permanents. Why would you deliberately give one of them up? Obviously it should be something with a downside, but what downside would warrant playing the bad card to begin with AND another deck slot to throw it to your opponent?

Nowadays, almost all of us know about the Donate / Delusions of Grandeur combo, but at the time it was completely profound, so it deserves some recognition here.

Shout-out to Morphling, which kept the "best creature ever" title for longer than any other card in Magic's history, even so much as inspiring an Aura later on that anagram'd to "I am Superman."

Obnoxiousest card: Yawgmoth's Will



It's a toss-up to me whether this is worse than Tolarian Academy, but I've already beaten the Academy to death, and I want to talk about this baby.

Vintage players call it "Yawgmoth's Win" for a reason. I have never in my life seen somebody resolve this spell in 60-card Magic and not win the game. I'm sure it has happened by some scrub somewhere, but I've never witnessed it. The ability to play your graveyard as hand number 2 for a turn -- in the same color as Dark Ritual -- is absolutely insane. Double up your instants and sorceries. Reuse sacrifice effects for pure value. Get around discard mechanics being a "downside." There's a damn good reason this card is banned in everything but Vintage. For its Standard it wasn't as bad as some other cards in the set, but it left a much bigger impact on Eternal formats even today.

Disappointest card: Victimize



Here we go again with doubling-up cards. Instead of reanimating one giant idiot, I get to have two? At the expense of one teeny tiny dork? Oh man, sign me up!

The problems with this premise are as follows:

-Reanimator decks don't want tiny dorks because those are creatures they don't want to reanimate.
-Three mana and a dork to sacrifice -- plus the requirement to have two targets -- is a lot more intricate of a setup than the typical "cast spell, get monster" scenario most decks want to have.
-If you're playing a Reanimator deck, you really shouldn't need two giant monsters to win. One is plenty.
-The creatures coming in tapped can be quite relevant if you're getting beaten down by a red deck.

It also didn't help that there was a better reanimation spell in the exact same set, and as a common (Exhume), plus the actual card Reanimate in the block before it. All the power with less investment and more versatility. It was a cool design, Victimize, but you just weren't as good as your peers.
