Flavour and disdain for supporting an FFD hosted project aside, unless there's a role in this setup that's harder to win with than SK or Usurper I don't think there's anything left to do in Mafia for me anyway. I got enough cred that I was basically a lock to get killed N1 several games in a row, have replaced into a game where I replaced obvscum that had like 5 votes coming in, argued out of it successfully, and caused Chris to have a meltdown and roleclaim cop to try and end me (I think this worked but was a net major positive for scum), and have won with the most difficult roles. What more is there to do.

At this point there really isn't anything to do but tarnish my legacy! It's a trap even if I was interested!

I mean, that depends on how much speed hype you give the Bhaalspawn. I don't, very much (I give the Bhaalspawn absolutely enormous reflexes/fighting skill respect because soloing a D&D superdragon is an utterly trivial accomplishment for an endgame bhaalspawn, and those are the kind of drakes who would have solid fights with Grigori, but this Bhaalspawn's kitted out as a fighter/mage and speed is more a Monk's ballgame), and I feel like most people wouldn't either. Maze...I debate whether it deserves to be taken out or not. It's interruptible and difficult to cast (can't autofire it with the Robe of Vecna + Amulet of power, IIRC), so there's a chance to act against it, even if it offers no saving throw. The whole 'any successful hit, ANY hit, cancels spellcasting' thing is a strong nerf, even if stoneskin or whatever is a thing. Most 7s can bombard people with attacks so fast that the protections will vanish very quickly, after all. It's strong but I'm not sure it's that strong.

This one's pretty easy tho - 'totally immune to mundane weaponry for a while, as well as magical weapons that lack strong plot hype and/or being good enough to severely dent high level mercs'. So like...Raiden couldn't hurt him, but Raziel could (because the Spirit/Soul Reaver is what an entire franchise centers around). The random-ass magic weapons the FF4 party has probably don't cut the mustard, too. It does require some discussion to determine what works and doesn't in edge cases (do the Nephalem's helltrappers count as being awesome enough to pierce the immunity? My gut says no), but mostly it's pretty clear.

Yeah, but it has to actually hit - 'Range: Touch' means you need to touch the target for it to go off, so as long as you can play keepaway you're safe. It's still really really dumb so I removed it - too much cheese potential for my tastes.

There, banned both Time Stop and Imprisonment. That way we don't super overcentralize the Bhaalspawn to the 'timestop + imprison' combo. I could sort of see Time Stop as a char upgrade but Imprisonment has no place in mercs, too stupid.

Imprisonment's a touch attack that disables weaponry. It's kind of a stupid spell, but I'm trying to imagine people buying the Bhaalspawn getting past Dante or Vergil's melee range without weapons and it's difficult to see. May as well get it out of the way though, he has enough good stuff without it.

Yeah, I had to think long and hard about that one. Ultimately the reason I gave it to the Bhaalspawn is that most 7s (Vergil, Dante, Bayonetta and Archer for sure, I forget if the Nephalem did as well) have showings for at least partially no-selling Time Stop-style effects. It's going to make mincemeat of weaker characters, but then, 7s always do. The question is if 6s and up could tank it or not (and I'm not opposed to saying 'Time Stop cannot be chained' if need be, leaving windows of opportunity to interrupt him/her). If they can't then it's too busted and I can ban that specifically as well as the more general bans.

Very curious about what respect everyone would give the Bhaalspawn - whether they need a nerf passive at all too, as well. I can't see him/her being anything but a 7, but maybe people think he/she is weaker than that?

Fake Edit: And before anybody asks why the char upgrade includes mod stuff, Ascension was a mod created by the lead writer of Throne of Bhaal, David Gaider, that included a load of coding and bug fixes among other things. It didn't literally ship with the expansion but it's pretty much canon as far as anybody's concerned.

Instant death is bulls*** because most instant deaths tend to be undodgeable and sometimes RNG based. Avada Kedavra is effectively just a projectile with Damage: Tons on it.

So making final decisions about the Super Sonic match, I think I'll go with Sonic vs Master Chief and Ryu H. It's a solid gauge of respect I think, and we'll get good enough data on where he falls. Pondering if there's any other exhibitions I want to run afterward. If anyone would argue for Chief and Ryu H, please step up - I'd really appreciate the help!

Doing some final sidequests for ToS before I go cave Mithos' face in and I feel like doing some upkeep rankings + analysis for the main party:

-Lloyd: He should actually be a 4/week, strictly looking at feats. He casually cuts through steel even before getting the Material Blades, tanks getting shot in the back by a mega buster and gives absolutely no f***s (like, complete no-sell), solos Kratos in incredibly convincing fashion, and the Material Blades give him, at minimum, some level of teleport hax. I can see why Lloyd is a 3 (namely that it makes him a more attractive purchase, and that this way he gets to shine brighter) but I would totally take him over Henry Cooldown (Travis Touchdown but without massive personality nerfing + bossfight hype, if you don't know him) and that guy is totally a 4/week. Was super impressed by him.

-Colette: There is literally no character who would benefit more from losing their personality than Colette. She has phenomenal turbobulls*** angelic powers...but her personality is so f***ing worthless she'd be lucky to be a 2/week in spite of having access to Grand Cross and Judgement. The really f***ing funny thing is that she literally has backing for becoming soulless so you could bake that in as a pricy character upgrade for her and it'd be a total steal even if it was 30 EXP. Colette being such a useless and clumsy ditz drops her two upkeep tiers, easily.

-Raine: I'd actually like to see someone like Raine over other healbots. Her offensive capabilities are pretty limited but it's really hard to argue with 'totally homing spells and also powerbuffz'. Certainly feels better than Aeris at least. Neat 2/week.

-Genis: Does ANYBODY like Genis? Indignation's ballin' but I feel like he would get zero respect. No feats anywhere to speak of.

-Sheena: lol sheena

I have never met another character who felt so f***ing worthless to use in any RPG, and this includes Jogurt in shining force

f*** those stubby ass normals, easy 1/week unless you give her spirithax bulls***

-Kratos: Man, my respect for Kratos soared after playing this game. Just 'can cast Judgement and is not Colette' totally makes him a strong 4/week who doesn't need a minbid discount, but the fact he s***houses an entire four man party and possibly a full team of eight (depending on if you think he wins or loses in the midgame battle - the fact Lloyd later says he held back suggests he won that 1v8) makes him super legit. Add in all the feats he's got and I feel like he's maybe one step below Alucard and Ky Kiske, and more versatile than the later with his healing magic and elemental spells plus flight.

-Zelos: IDK about Zelos man. Dude feels like 'Kratos but worse', but...he's in a really weird spot. 3/week I guess?

-Presea: I really have no idea why she was in M3 over any other Tales reps (besides Lloyd). Like sure she's strong but she has no feats whatsoever. I feel like everybody besides Genis and Raine has more potential than her, even Colette. She isn't even a great tank because she is ssssssssoooooooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwww. Solid 2/week I guess?

-Regal: Honestly was kinda floored by how casually he outshone everybody whenever he gave a s***. I have zero doubts that he's up there with Kratos for the title of strongest ToS rep (besides Mithos I guess but who'd want that dweeb in mercs). Honestly would want him in Mercs just to see what a leader who did solid research could do with him. Probably a pretty solid 4/week.

I get why Lloyd and Kratos got into M4 (protag and beloved side character) but why was this guy not in too? Dude is ridiculously overpowered compared to the rest of the party. Kratos needed a teeny tiny pricetag for his 4/week value but Regal is a very easy 4 IMO.

What makes Armstrong such a great antagonist is that he isn't a villain, really. He does terrible things but if his ends were better he'd be the hero of the story. The only reason he isn't on Raiden's side is that he never met someone who could change his course. I actually find he's amazingly well written because Platinum never shows him to be aware of the things he's doing wrong. He's legitimately trying his best to be a good man who makes the world a better place. There's no cartoonish villainy even though he's all 'NANOMACHINES SON'. It's an extremely manly bossfight because if things were just a little bit different, Armstrong would probably be fighting beside you against some other final boss. In a lot of ways, Rising isn't an MGS game, but it absolutely nailed the part where it had to be moving and make haunting predictions about the future.

We're talking "has male friends who cosplay Patchouli and Alice" level. "Seeks out and listens to Touhou remixes of obscure PC-98 themes" level. "Is helping develop and test enough Touhou-themed MtG sets to create our own Standard" level. That is how Touhou I am.

Also for reference, 'rapidly deteriorating health' in league terms means 'like 8 seconds of reanimation assuming nobody damages you at all, and reduced by further damage'. It's very very short.

Tron and Jarvan.

Way better than their opposition. Jarv is crazy disruptive and long ranged for a melee dude (plus very acrobatic), and Tron has a literal minigun packing robot. Kazuma shoots down helicopters with pistols too cause screw you. Don't see how this isn't a complete godstomp in their favor.

I think it's on purpose. It's really cruel but it very elegantly educates you on the fact you have the power to SAVE and what it means. It's like a tutorial into Undertale's primary philosophical conundrum, instead of a game mechanic, and I love it for that. So perfectly orchestrated from Toby Fox.
