Good job, Ulti. It's nice that you seem to be enjoying the game a bit more now. Vicar Amelia is a great character. Even in such a short scene the directing of the game actually tells us a lot about the lore. Also I have ideas about her based on other things. I guess like any standard souls game you can read about the items you pick up in the world and base your own story on that.

By the way if anyone is interested I defeated Vicar Amelia using only the Blunderbuss as part of my Gunner Challenge. You can watch the video here:

Since she cannot be parried this is the first mandatory fight in a Gunner Challenge which is truly difficult. Interestingly the gun CAN make her limbs bleed for a bit of extra damage, but you can't do enough to actually stun and visceral attack her.

I wouldn't try to defend Bloodborne from you, especially not in this current state. To be completely honest I had similar (but less) extreme feelings when I first played the game. I thought that it was way too hard compared even to previous Souls titles, and most importantly it was the wrong kind of difficulty. It felt unfair!

This is going to verge on Poe's Law territory so you'll just have to take my word for it that I'm being completely genuine. I believe Bloodborne has by far a higher skill cap than any other game I have played in my life. It wasn't until I had beaten the game 4 times and gotten the Platinum Trophy that I started to understand and to feel that the difficulty was fair. Even by the time you beat Father Gascoigne right now it's going to seem like you only won because you were able to keep continuously healing against an unrelenting onslaught.

But the truth is that the mechanics and the complexity of the boss patterns is so deep that they cannot be exploited via simple methods as you might do in DeS, DS1 or DS2. When you are but a fledgling Hunter it will undoubtedly drive you mad. The bosses are too frantic, too aggressive, there are not good defensive shields and it's too hard to predict or react to what is going on. But the more you play the game the better you will learn -- not the PATTERN of the boss to be exploited but his TELLS so that you know how to react in any given moment. Your reflexes will improve to the point where to can answer these tells. You will learn the moveset of your chosen weapon inside and out, always knowing the best way to respond as long as you are able to react in time. And when those factors combine together you will truly ascend to the state where you can even begin to master the game.

In terms of difficulty I think Bloodborne is a masterpiece. This is further helped along by the fact that there are chokepoints which make it very difficult to simply grind past any stage of the game. When fighting Father G you have to do it with a +3 Weapon at best. You can grind levels I suppose but your damage output will be hampered by what you're holding. Every stage of the game has a major chokepoint like this (at +3, +6, +9, and +10 respectively) so that your capability will always be limited by your own skill. The game both forces you to rely on your skill but also the behavior of enemies (especially bosses) is so complex that your skill can grow and grow and grow and you will still see returns on your investment.

Yeah I agree with that. Before Bloodborne my favorite game for a long time was Demon's Souls. I've never been super into the online features. I used them a bit in Dark Souls 2 and that's it. For the most part I think the big draw is the empty, lonely worlds and having to tell your own story as you go.

Bloodborne is without a doubt my favorite game of all time. It's hard for me to say what is the "best game ever made" since I prefer to just discuss my own opinion rather than objective truths. Those are much harder to discern.

There is a way to wake up the Doll before fighting any bosses, and if you explored Central Yharnam at length (which it seems you did) then you actually had the ability to wake her up and spend those souls. It was just not something you did. You also could have spent them on items. The game is a bit cryptic in that regard in that it does want you to figure stuff out for yourself rather than explicitly telling you. I could see how some people might see this as a negative.

I also played offline my first time through the game. I loved the atmosphere of being totally alone and needing to find my way through this twisted world without any help. The fact that the game never holds your hand and will punish you fiercely for things you may not have even known you were doing wrong only adds to this atmosphere.

I earned the coveted -3 from Ulti in today's round. I shall wear it proudly as a badge of honor.

It's funny because I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone so incapable of putting aside political differences that he can't distinguish how people feel about issues from the person themselves. This is why I have a lot more respect for someone like Corrik, who I can be on good to neutral terms with despite having gone toe to toe in debate with him on many issues.

is it too late to change my vote? this post really makes me want to -3 FD
