I honestly don't believe anyone who claims there's zero voter fraud in any major election tbh. I'm sure there have been plenty of elections where it's negligible, but the financial benefit/loss and stakes are just too high to believe that unscrupulous people aren't being unscrupulous. That being said voter suppression is much more common, useful and difficult to prosecute than trying to add invalid votes.

Well we weren't lucky enough to be born in the peak of a time where a massive war annihilated the infrastructure of pretty much every major competitor and artificially inflated worker incomes due to decreased global competition.

We weren't the ones who made $12 an hour (in 2017 dollars) working minimum wage jobs in a time where cost of living was dramatically lower.

We weren't the ones who used hard won labor rights to get situated and then once we got our share, immediately start pulling those ladders up behind us by consistently fighting against all the labor rights they used when starting out.

Not against the Prime Directive. They are allowed to share technology, just not technology that is used for weapons. Also, again, her crew is top priority. It was the only way to secure peace.

They would likely need permission from the Federation government to trade technology. Ironically, even Janeway expresses regret at one point for giving them the technology, but only after it bit her in the ass. She's only concerned about such things when they effect her negatively.

Nope the Doctor told her outright and she ordered him to shut up and then continued pursuing them ("You wouldn't even be considering this if they were flesh and blood!"). I'm not sure how you missed that, The Doctor defected because of that and it was a large part of the storyline.

Which is something a Starfleet captain needs to be prepared to do over committing treason and attempted genocide. Other captains were prepared to self-destruct the ship over much smaller things. Besides they could have also gone around Borg space (they talked about that in the episode), but she decided she'd rather commit treason to save a few years.

What the hell kind of backwards logic is this? He was created by an accident, not deliberate killing. They were already gone at that point. IIRC, she had no choice in that. It was him or their ship.

She didn't try very hard to avoid murder even Tuvok called her irrational and insisted they could find another solution to which Janeway threatened to relieve him of duty. If she wants to commit murder to achieve her goals then she needs to be prepared to face the consequences when she gets home.

Umm not really. Admiral Janeway basically told her to ignore the prime directive and Captain Janeway objected briefly but when she realized she would have to make personal sacrifices on the trip home she acquiesced immediately. They then installed the future tech and flew right in.

They're hard on her because she's a hypocritical psychopath who should have been put in prison rather than promoted to fucking Vice Admiral above Picard.

I've always broken down like this:

Picard - better diplomat/explorer and better peacetime captain
Sisko - better wartime captain

Basically Picard is the perfect captain for the Enterprise's mission and Sisko is the perfect captain to be in charge of the most strategic station in the quadrant. Picard would have never gotten the Romulans to join the Dominion War (he would have shut down Garak on day 1 if he even asked him for help), but Sisko would have started a war with the Romulans had he been captain of the Enterprise.

There are some legitimate uses for them as well. A lot of free linux distros distribute with torrents which outsources distribution from paid servers.

A single Federal minimum wage in general doesn't really make much sense when you consider the cost of an apartment in San Francisco vs Detroit. The minimum wage needs cost of living adjustments, yes, as it has been stagnant for too long but it should be indexed to local cost of living.

You'd have to be a pretty desperate actor to take that role. People have taken worse though I guess. I've always wanted to know just how they do casting calls when they have a character whose primary characteristic is that they're fat and ugly. Who reads it and goes "hey I'm fat and ugly and I want it to be highlighted in the role so everyone knows it!"

When the state owns everything and almost everything is automated, sure, *maybe* UBI will make sense.

Whatever we do, it's important that we're not reactive to the problem. Being reactive is almost always worse than being proactive and when it's an existential crisis for everyone but the upper echelons of society maybe we should consider this problem before years/decades after it happens.

You people always just assume that we're never going to reach a point where AI outperforms humans in almost all fields. It doesn't matter to a generalized AI if there's a labor shift because a generalized AI can handle the new field as well. Hell we might even reach a point where most people can't even tell the difference between AI generated art and human generated art. I'm skeptical that even the creative types are safe. When human labor becomes obsolete, the people who own the lion's share of necessary resources become kings and capitalism becomes detrimental to the average person. The lower classes will have exactly zero leverage by that point.

If that happens, we can either choose to allow all people to live well or we can choose to allow some people to live like kings while the rest live at their mercy.

Some sort of basic income is a necessity in the transition from capitalism in a fully automated society. If we stick to the status quo, things are going to get really really ugly when unemployment is 90%

I'm 170 with 15% body fat at 5'9.5" and a 31 inch waist. According to bmi, I'm at 24.7 on a scale where 25 is the lower edge of over weight. That's not a good scale.

Did you miss the part where I admitted it doesn't work for everyone, just for most people? A single anecdote doesn't do anything to diminish my point. Also 24.7 is a normal weight, so I don't know why your anecdote even matters. It's not calling you fat.

It honestly works fine for most people. I've found that the people who are usually most vehemently against it are fat people who are offended at being labelled obese/overweight. The true outliers, who are rare, like tall people and bodybuilders don't really seem to care. There are of course better scales, but most of them aren't as measure and most doctors can tell you're an outlier and it wont' work for you anyway by just looking.

That's specious. There's a link between long term obesity and cognitive decline, but you still can't point to an individual obese person and say "that person is stupid because they're fat."
