https://torrentfreak.com/reddit-banned-2625-subreddits-for-excessive-copyright-infringement-in-2021-220223/

Reddit's latest transparency report reveals that during 2021, Reddit removed 665,898 pieces of content following copyright infringement complaints, up 104% on the previous year. As one of the more popular user-submitted content sites on the internet today, Reddit and its community moderators have to work hard to keep the platform in order. In 2021, Reddits users created nearly 5.8 billion posts, comments, private messages and chats across the platform, with 297,161,752 later being removed by moderators (around 175.8k), removed by site admins (108.6K), and the authors themselves (12.6K). Content can be removed for a variety of reasons. Content manipulation is the largest category and encompasses spam, community interference (so-call brigading), vote manipulation, and similar issues. For the purpose of this report, however, well home in on the copyright issues faced by Reddit during the last year and how the site responded to them.

In 2021, Reddit permanently suspended 2,813 users and banned 2,625 subreddits for excessive copyright infringement, the company writes. These figures represent a substantial increase over those published for 2020. In that year, Reddit banned just 303 users and terminated 514 subreddits. Although overall copyright complaints are up 104% on the previous year, the sites termination policy doesnt appear to have changed significantly. This may suggest that some users and subreddits simply arent getting the message that by repeatedly posting infringing content, it can and will result in both them and their communities getting banned.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/23/cyberattack-hits-ukrainian-banks-and-government-websites.html

Several Ukrainian government websites were offline on Wednesday as a result of a mass distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, Mykhailo Fedorov, the head of Ukraines Ministry of Digital Transformation said in his Telegram channel. The attack, which also impacted some banks, began around 4 p.m. local time, according to Fedorov. He didnt say which banks were attacked or what the extent of the damage was. Websites for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet of Ministers and Parliament (Rada) were among those down as of Wednesday morning Eastern Time. The government sites were offline as officials attempted to switch traffic elsewhere to minimize damage, he said. A DDoS attack is when a hacker floods a victims network or server with traffic so that others are unable to access it.

The source of the attack is not yet confirmed but the outages come as Russia continues to accumulate troops around Ukraines borders. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden said Russia has begun an invasion, after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into two pro-Russian breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, and announced sanctions on Russian banks, the countrys sovereign debt and several individuals close to the Russian government. Ukraine reported a separate attack last week that took down four government websites, according to NBC News. Around the same time, Ukraines Cyber Police said many residents had received text messages saying that ATMs in the country did not work, though it was unclear if any ATMs were actually affected, NBC News reported. Russia denied responsibility for last weeks attack on the Ukrainian government websites.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/22/us-womens-soccer-secures-equal-pay-24-million-after-six-year-legal-battle/

U.S. women soccer players reached a landmark agreement with the sports American governing body to end a six-year legal battle over equal pay, a deal in which they are promised $24 million plus bonuses that match those of the men. The U.S. Soccer Federation and the women announced a deal Tuesday that will have players split $22 million, about one-third of what they had sought in damages. The USSF also agreed to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at growing the sport for women. The USSF committed to providing an equal rate of pay for the womens and mens national teams including World Cup bonuses subject to collective bargaining agreements with the unions that separately represent the women and men. For our generation, knowing that were going to leave the game in an exponentially better place than when we found it is everything, 36-year-old midfielder Megan Rapinoe said during a telephone interview with The Associated Press. Thats what its all about because, to be honest, there is no justice in all of this if we dont make sure it never happens again.

The settlement was a victory for the players, who sparked fans to chant Equal Pay! when they won their second straight title in France in 2019. And it was a success for USSF President Cindy Parlow Cone, a former player who became head of the federation in March 2020. Cone replaced Carlos Cordeiro, who quit after the federation made a legal filing that claimed women had less physical ability and responsibility than male counterparts. This is just one step towards rebuilding the relationship with the womens team. I think this is a great accomplishment and Im excited about the future and working together with them, Cone said. Now we can shift the focus to other things, most importantly, growing the game at all levels and increasing opportunities for girls and women. U.S. women have won four World Cups since the programs start in 1985, while the men havent reached a semifinal since 1930. Five American stars led by Morgan and Rapinoe began the challenge with a complaint to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in April 2016. Women sued three years later, seeking damages under the federal Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The sides settled the working conditions portion in December 2020, dealing with issues such as charter flights, accommodations and playing surfaces. They were scheduled to argue on March 7 before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in an attempt to reinstate the equal pay portion thrown out by a U.S. District Court. The settlement announced today is an important step in righting the many wrongs of the past, the union for the womens team said in a statement.

TopicNYC had more hate crimes against Asians than any other US city over past 2 years

https://nypost.com/2022/02/20/inside-nycs-skyrocketing-anti-asian-violence-how-hate-speech-led-to-hate-crimes/

Three days after US officials first used the term China Virus on a national news broadcast, a barrage of anti-Asian attacks began in New York City. Within hours, two Asian Americans were separately assaulted the first of such hate crimes in the city for the year and marking a deeply troubling, sometimes deadly trend that continues today. Where is your corona mask, you Asian bitch? a 23-year-old woman was asked March 10, 2020, before she was slugged in the face. Hours later, a 59-year-old man was kicked to the ground and told, Fucking Chinese coronavirus, go back to your country. Before those attacks, not a single hate crime against Asian Americans had been reported to the NYPD in 2020. But by the end of that year, there were 30 a 900-percent surge from just three recorded in 2019. And at the close of 2021, the NYPD had its first murder as a hate crime on its hands since 2017 when Yao Pan Ma, 61, died from an earlier assault. That year, the number of racist crimes against Asian Americans skyrocketed to 133. In the Big Apple, which saw more hate crimes against Asian Americans over the past two years than any other US city, the problem is particularly acute even more so after the horrific Feb. 13 murder of Christina Yuna Lee. Our community is in a lot of pain, Jo-Ann Yoo, the executive director of the Asian American Federation, told The Post. But also, we are enraged because this has been happening often, this has been happening too much, and we deserve answers, we deserve to feel a sense of safety in our community.

A little over a week ago, Lee, a 35-year-old Korean American creative producer, was stabbed 40 times in her Chinatown apartment by a career criminal who followed her into her building. While prosecutors are still investigating whether Lees murder was a hate crime, her family seems convinced it was one. Her death is part of an alarming pattern of unchecked, hateful violence against women, namely women of Asian descent and women of color that can no longer stand without consequence, Lees relative, Angela Yujin Lee, wrote on a GoFundMe page that launched Saturday in her memory. Its a sentiment shared by Brian Chin, the landlord of Lees Chrystie Street building, where her brutalized body was found in the bathroom of her sixth-floor walk-up. Days after her death, the memorial set up outside the building condemning anti-Asian hate was destroyed by vandals, who smashed candles and tore up a sign that said, Stop Asian Hate. Lees death came less than a month after Michelle Go, a 40-year-old Asian American, was killed when a homeless, mentally ill man allegedly shoved her in front of an oncoming train in Times Square. Gos death has also not been classified as a hate crime, but Asian New Yorkers and advocates said bias motivations can be difficult to prove or easy to conceal allowing law enforcement to count them as just regular attacks, which carry far lighter penalties. Ben Wei, the executive director and founder of Asians Fighting Injustice, said the community feels demoralized when it comes to reporting crimes to the police. There seems to be a lack of confidence in reporting to police, both from a demoralization standpoint that they wont be taken seriously but also some fear, especially if youre undocumented or English isnt your language, Wei said. Youre very reticent, you dont know what kind of negative attention youre bringing upon yourself, youre scared. People who have been attacked choose not to follow up with police, so weve seen that trend as well. Yoo, of the Asian American Federation, said the grandmother who was set on fire in 2020 didnt even tell her family about the crime for several days, let alone the police. She instead first told community groups in her neighborhood.

https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/cross-country-skiing-finn-remi-suffers-frozen-penis-mass-start-race-2022-02-20/

The men's 50km mass start race at the Beijing Games was shortened to 30km but that did little to help Finland's Remi Lindholm, who needed a heat pack at the end of the race to thaw out a particularly sensitive body part. Lindholm spent just under an hour and 16 minutes traversing the course in howling, freezing winds, leading to his penis becoming frozen for the second time in a cross-country skiing race following a similar incident in Ruka, Finland last year. "You can guess which body part was a little bit frozen when I finished (the men's Olympic 50km race) ... it was one of the worst competitions I've been in. It was just about battling through," he told Finnish media.

With organisers worried about frostbite during Saturday's race, it was delayed by an hour and shortened by 20km. The thin suits and under-layers worn by racers, as well as plasters to cover their faces and ears, offered little protection. Lindholm explained that he used a heat pack to try to thaw out his appendage once the race was over. "When the body parts started to warm up after the finish, the pain was unbearable," he added.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/19/nypd-arrest-babacar-mbaye-for-punching-4-year-old-kicking-cop/

An unhinged man with a history of attacking strangers randomly slugged a 4-year-old boy in the head in Times Square then promptly got lit up like the lights on Broadway by two women, with the childs mother also stepping in to help restrain him until officers arrived, law enforcement sources and prosecutors said. Babacar Mbaye, 34, was arrested Thursday after the unprovoked broad-daylight attack at 46th Street and Seventh Avenue at the Crossroads of the World, the NYPD said. The brute allegedly hit the child at around 3:20 p.m. as the area bustled with pedestrians enjoying an unseasonably warm afternoon. He was then tackled by the childs mom and another woman, according to the NYPD, law enforcement and security footage obtained by The Post. The video showed the two heroic women racing in front of the TKTS bleachers to take down the creep. One of them tackled the suspect just inches away from Seventh Avenue traffic while the other swung an object that appeared to be a bottle or rolled-up umbrella at him, according to the footage.

Who needs DA Bragg? The mother took care of justice the old fashioned way, said a Manhattan cop, referring to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. When police showed up to arrest Mbaye, he allegedly kicked one of the officers in the leg as they took him into custody, prosecutors said at his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court late Friday night. I drank a whole bottle of hand sanitizer. I shouldnt have done this, the suspect told police while in custody at Bellevue Hospital, according to prosecutors. Mbaye who was on supervised release in connection with other recent random attacks was charged with felony assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, according to police and prosecutors. He has three open misdemeanors for assaulting strangers dating back to the summer, including two in the past month, one where he allegedly pushed a stranger and punched her twice in the shoulder and the other where he punched a stranger in the head, prosecutors said. Sources said the suspect has a record dating back to 2009, with arrests including for assault, criminal possession of a weapon, DWI and menacing. He has 16 prior misdemeanor convictions, according to prosecutors.

The French model agent who was charged with securing girls and young women for billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein was found dead Saturday in a Paris prison cell, according to reports. Jean-Luc Brunel, 74, was found hanged in his cell at La Sante where he had been remanded in custody since December 2020, awaiting trial on sexual assault and rape. He was also being investigated for trafficking minors, including girls as young as 12 years old, according to French news reports. Brunel, who ran Karin Models in Paris, and later formed MC2 Model Management with Epstein, went into hiding after Epsteins own suicide in a Manhattan lockup in August, 2019. French police arrested Brunel in December, 2020. Brunel, who worked as a model agent in Paris since the late 1970s, was introducd to Epstein by his former gal pal, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of sex trafficking last year. French prison authorities told Le Parisien that no breach in security at the prison had occurred, and an investigation into the cause of death had been opened.

Yea. Just realized the NY Times has a better title and goes into more detail. Apparently this is to remove homeless off trains forever now.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/18/nyregion/homeless-people-subway-trains-mta.html

The police will stringently enforce the subways often flouted rules of conduct, including bans on occupying more than one seat, littering and being aggressive toward other passengers. Dozens of mental-health professionals with the power to order involuntary hospitalization of people they deem a danger to themselves or others will be added to outreach teams across the system.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/18/eric-adams-to-crack-down-on-rule-breaking-on-nyc-subway-with-new-safety-plan/

Mayor Eric Adams announced a new plan Friday to clean up the citys subway system by cracking down on rule-breaking and preventing people from living on the trains and in the stations. No more smoking. No more doing drugs. No more sleeping. No more doing barbecues on the subway system. No more just doing whatever you want, he said. No. Those days are over. Swipe your MetroCard. Ride the system. Get off at your destination. Thats what this administration is saying. Adams said teams of outreach workers and NYPD cops would start canvassing the subways next week to identify mentally ill and homeless people who need to be removed and will work to get them the treatment and housing they need.

We know where they are. Theres one case where a woman has been living under a staircase for months. Its just not acceptable, he said. Thats disgusting and thats not who we are as a city. Adams also said that although the vast majority of homeless people are not dangerous, we have to be honest about the numbers who are a danger to themselves and others. The mayor cited an incident Thursday on an L train in Manhattan, where a 22-year-old man was stabbed while breakdancing by an assailant whos believed to be homeless. Adams, a former NYPD captain, also noted that it took place on a train I rode as a transit officer. Adams said his plan would involve the increased application of Kendras Law, a 1999 statute that allows judges to order outpatient treatment for mentally ill people. But Adams also said his plan was not about arresting people but instead about arresting a problem. Were not going to be heavy-handed, he said. Were not saying if you commit an infraction, were going to put handcuffs on you. We want to correct the condition.

A 22-year-old man was stabbed while breakdancing aboard a Manhattan subway train in an unprovoked attack Thursday afternoon, police and sources said. The victim was knifed three times by a suspect, whos believed to be homeless, on an L train approaching the 3rd Avenue station just before 2 p.m., according to cops and sources. The breakdancer suffered two stab wounds to his leg and one to his arm. Police said the assailant fled the train at the 1st Avenue station. He was still being sought Thursday night. The victim rode the train into Brooklyn, where he got off at Bedford Avenue and received medical attention. He was taken by EMS to Bellevue Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The midday violence in the subway system stunned some commuters. I think its terrible, said Kate Raudenmbush outside the 1st Avenue Station. Im a little bit shocked that this happened in my neighborhood again. Another straphanger, who was admittedly not shocked, noted: crime is up. No good. We are going down the tubes. https://nypost.com/2022/02/17/amazon-suspends-black-lives-matter-from-its-charity-platform/

The beleaguered Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation has been kicked off Amazons charity platform for its failure to disclose where tens of millions in donations it received nearly two years ago have ended up. AmazonSmile, which gives a portion of eligible purchases on the online shopping site to charities, said it had to temporarily suspend the group today, an Amazon spokesperson told The Post. States have rules for nonprofits, and organizations participating in AmazonSmile need to meet those rules, the spokesperson said. Unfortunately this organization fell out of compliance with the rules in several states, so weve had to temporarily suspend them from the program until they come into compliance. Amazon plans to hold any funds that have accumulated for BLMGNF until theyre back in compliance, the spokesperson said. AmazonSmile has raised more than $300 million for charities, according to its website.

In Oct. 2020, BLMGNF took in more than $65 million in donations from Thousand Currents, a charity that manages assets of grassroots non-profits, according to documents filed with the California Attorney General. But the group has so far failed to disclose what it did with the cash. As a result, several states have revoked its ability to collect donations. In California, where the group is based, the states Department of Justice warned BLMGNFs leaders earlier this month that they would be personally liable for any delinquency fees and fines. On Feb. 11, BLMGNF released its long-overdue federal tax filing, but also changed its accounting period from a calendar year to a fiscal year. The filing shows no contributions or grants between the January to June reporting period, and the group likely has another year to file their return for the remainder of 2020.

A sick Louisiana teacher has pleaded guilty to giving her students cupcakes laced with her husbands sperm. Cynthia Perkins, 36, admitted to a slew of disturbing sex crimes, including child pornography, second-degree rape and mingling of harmful substances, when she took a plea deal in Livingston on Monday. The teacher and her now-ex-husband, Dennis Perkins, were arrested in 2019 on more than 150 sex crime-related charges including sexually abusing a child together. Cynthia was also hit with the harmful substance charge after she put Dennis sperm into cupcakes that she gave to students at Livingstons Westside Junior High School, authorities said. Under the plea deal, Cynthia had 68 other charges against her dismissed and will have to testify against Dennis at his upcoming trial. She not only waived any right to appeal, and attempt to avoid conviction, but she also spared the victims from reliving her horrific crimes during this particular trial, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said in a statement.

Cynthia will be sentenced to 41 years in prison on Friday, authorities said. She filed for divorce from her husband in the wake of their arrests and alleged that Dennis had manipulated her into committing the crimes. The couple were busted after authorities received a tip at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Investigators later found nude photos of them with the minor. Cynthia resigned from Westside Junior High School the day after her arrest, while Dennis was fired from his deputy role at the Livingston Parish Sheriffs Office. Dennis is scheduled to face trial in May on 150 criminal charges.

A woman was stabbed to death inside her Chinatown apartment early Sunday after she was unknowingly stalked by a random man following a night out, police and sources said. A neighbor across the hallway on the top floor of 111 Chrystie Street called 911 about 4:30 a.m. Sunday after hearing the 35-year-old victim screaming, law-enforcement sources said. NYPD cops arrived at the scene and found a man inside the apartment who tried to flee via the fire escape, before barricading himself inside the apartment, according to law-enforcement sources. There was a male inside refusing to exit the apartment, a police spokesman said Sunday. The NYPDs Emergency Service Unit was then dispatched to the lower Manhattan crime scene and broke the door down to enter the apartment, where they discovered a man covered in blood, and a 35-year-old woman in the bathroom tub bleeding from multiple wounds to the body, according to a source and an NYPD spokesman . FDNY medics pronounced the unidentified victim dead at 5:55 a.m.

A police spokesman said the 911 call was prompted by a disturbance in the apartment. A source told The Post the victim arrived home early Sunday in a cab after a night out. Unbeknownst to her, she was followed by a man into her apartment, a source said. When she entered the apartment, she was attacked by the man, the source said. Though the victim was an Asian woman, cops do not suspect the incident was a hate crime, according to a source. An NYPD spokesperson told The Post that it appears the stabber may have followed the victim into the building.
