Pokemon is definitely in a rut but the main problem is that adult children refuse to let the series be for actual children.
Animal Crossing is totally fine.
Metroid has never been better and also it has spent about as much time being dead as it has been being good.
SF has literally never been better than it is now.
Star Fox has never been a strong brand. Even 64 is not actually that good. There's no coasting to be done.
Final Fantasy is not in the best place but 13 is the only truly bad game in the mainline series.

But you make a good point with Pokemon.. they try to cater the series to kids, but it's the adults that grew up with it that are playing, I've especially seen that with Pokemon Go
