you can keep your great shield up while attacking with a thrusting weapon and as long as your guard and stamina are high enough, you can continue pretty much indefinitely

why would 11 be modern but 12 not? 11 is much more in line with classic final fantasy concepts, aesthetics, mechanics, and nomenclature than 12 and even a lot of PS1/2 era FFs sans 9. ie: classic jobs like warrior and black mage are available and their class gear sets are based on their NES/SNES sprites.

12s battle system is even largely derivative of 11s.
