maybe, hmm, just maybe, she needed to have her diet watched?

Funnily enough, those same parents also made sure to stay informed of and question her every expense, to the point of being financially controlling.

Perhaps if they'd practiced what they'd preached, they wouldn't be in the financial mess they're in now.

If we're going with the tough love argument, then consider this a lesson from daughter to parent. Perhaps they should have handled their money better, then they wouldn't be begging for a spare room in their daughters house and stupidly passing up free accommodation in her living room.

Another thing I'd note, is that their insistence on having the spare room sounds to me, like a move for a longer-term solution, as opposed to a breather until they're back up on their feet and running again.

The blatant disregard for the pets would put me off too, because they're a part of her life and important to her, enough to give them a space, which they're now used / accustomed to which provides them with a lot of quality of life.

She'd be putting her pets out of the way, for what sounds like abusive, controlling morons that at any time, based on their entitled attitude towards having that room over the living space, could just "lose" the pets. They've supposedly expressed their dislike of her lifestyle choices, and if the past is anything to go by, I wouldn't be surprised if they try to take charge again whilst living there.

Frankly, fuck them, take the shelter, learn some fucking humility and to be grateful she offered them anything in the first place.

I find it somewhat funny that the daughter has her life together, yet the ones who gave the "financial advice" or were "financially controlling" are somehow out on the street.

Perhaps if they'd practiced what they'd preached, they wouldn't be in the mess they're seemingly in now.

On top of that, anyone pulling the "they raised you for 18 years" can fuck off. Nobody asks to be brought into the world. Congratulations to the parents for the doing the absolute bare minimum a parent should be doing for the child. To insinuate one should express gratitude for that is absolutely hilarious. I would never expect my two sons so show me gratitude or respect for doing the absolute bare minimum. I want them to remember me for being a good and caring father, not a controlling abusive prick that feels entitled to respect by default that he doesn't deserve.

Another thing there, is the obsession with the weight of the aunt, which led to their controlling behaviour towards their daughters diet which then led to an eating disorder or issues related to eating anyway. Fucking bang-up job on that front.

Perhaps having a basic talk with your child about the benefits of healthier eating and remaining fit would have gone down better than weighing every plate they have and forcing them to meet a schedule for weigh-ins.

My take is that they're entitled assholes upset that they cannot get their way, and are asking their daughter to completely change her living arrangement, which provides her pets with significant quality of life, for them. She offered the living room which should provide ample space and time for them to get back on their feet, and they declined, because they're entitled wankers.

Excerpt from the post :

I (37F) am not close to my parents (65F e 67M). One of several reasons is their control and I always hated that. Even living alone, they wanted to control and it took several years (of therapy) to almost completely cut them out of my life and I have lived in peace for 7 years.

I don't intend to have children, I don't intend to get married and live together (even dating), so my expenses are with me and my 4 pets (2 dogs and 2 cats). They live a life of luxury, honestly, because I have a job that pays well.

I have a 3bd/3ba house, the two suites I use for bedroom and office. The spare room is for my pets.
The entire room is modified, several things on the wall for cats, beds, toys, a door that leads to the backyard. (I like to sleep completely alone and in peace, which has already proved ineffective when sleeping with all of them).

My parents only visited my house once and before my pets (the oldest is 4 years old). So really, at the time, there was an empty room.
Last week my parents called me saying they lost their house (financed and delayed a lot of installments) and asked if they could stay in the spare room.

I said that only the living room would be available, they could sleep on the floor (mattress) or sofa (very spacious and comfortable), as the free room became my pets' room.
They started to get angry, saying that pets could sleep in the living room instead of them and that it is extremely disrespectful to offer parents, even worse elderly people, to sleep in the living room on the floor or sofa while pets could do it.. In addition to complaints about my lifestyle and the fact that I have a pet room.

I got angry and said my house was not open to them.

I don't vibe with the whole "both are as bad as one another" shit takes either.

In fact, I've legitimately grown tired of people spewing this nonsense in an attempt to downplay the actions of the person / abuser in this situation, and the put both on similar footing. It's gross. I don't care about Depp or Heard from a realistic standpoint, they don't care about me either.

It's the potential outcome of the case I'm interested in and the highlighting of men in this situation also being on the receiving end of more abuse in relationships than people realise and hopefully, less normalising of shit behaviour from women in general. If we can put men on a pedestal for the bad actions of a few, we can do the same for women.

It also puts a big fat dent in the idea of the fools that truly subscribe in the "believe all women" mantra, though I imagine their cognitive dissonance would prevent them from being reasonable on a subject such as this anyway.

Might have something to do with how the relationship works.

If the man is the primary earner in the house and the woman becomes terminally ill, the burden of care ultimately falls on him financially and emotionally, which can be difficult to juggle and bring on significant, crippling stress. In my experience, men deal with stress worse than women, and can be more destructive outwardly, whereas a woman, more inward. That's anecdotal, by my experience.

My old man didn't leave my mother when she had two bouts of cancer (clear now) but she knew how much help she needed made work life very difficult for him and felt bad for him over it. Not that I think she should have of course. My old man also very much loves my mother, so he wouldn't leave, they're in it til the end, but the stress brought on by the health issues was huge. She needed a lot of support and he needed to take a lot of time off work and become a caregiver for her too, which had significant financial implications at the time as he'd been made redundant, especially through the pandemic.

Luckily, his new work was very understanding. Though he's now doing an extra hour or two at work likely to compensate for time off. He was paid well during his time off too. Probably because of how well qualified he is as an automotive technician, not an easy guy to replace as far as resume goes and he's pretty much never taken time off work.

I should clarify though, I'm based in the UK, our health-care is a little different to the US so if this study is indeed US based (didn't check, I assume it is) then the financial woes of it all could be more significant there.

For him, his country is being invaded and war crimes committed for everyone to see on a global stage. Significant damage to his homeland, potential loss of loved ones himself or friends etc. In his shoes it probably seems justified.

It seems real shitty and of course, heart-breaking for the woman on the phone. This is the reality of war though, is isn't fun and games. People's livelihoods, cities, towns and country as well their lives specifically, are on the line here.

I don't condone it, but what else can I say than it is what it is? I'm not the one who's country is the target of a significant invasion.

Ultimately, they're both celebrities, so far removed from my world to the point where they couldn't give a flying fuck about my life or the things that affect me, my wife and kids so, I don't give a toss about either of them.

That being said, right now, the Amber Heard case is worth paying more attention to because this is a woman who positioned herself on being a victim of a well known and beloved star to many, crippled his reputation in the process and placed herself on a pedestal for women's rights and dealing with things like domestic abuse / violence. She benefited culturally from a social hive mind that currently, whilst they cannot truly oppress, still attempt to vilify the ever living fuck out of men on social media wherever possible.

The very notion that a man can be abused, manipulated, harassed, goaded, gaslighted or physically hurt by another woman initially had people laughing it off pretending it of course, isn't a thing and it was impossible for the likes of Heard to be an aggressor in any case.

I don't have a vested interest in Depp or Heard, but the outcome and fallout of the case for me, is that I hope men get a stronger support network in also dealing with domestic abuse, because the idea that men do not go through or have not been through it has gone on for far too long.

My eldest is pretty smart for a six year old, very good with tech, good mental acuity and learns quickly and also pretty social, last school report we received had him above the national average (UK) in key areas for his age group which was nice to see. Lacks some emotional control as expected for his age, though that does creep into his ability to try things sometimes. He's gotten so used to being good at certain things, that he gets emotional / sad if he can't do new things first try. I know he can do it, but he gets himself into a rut.

Anyway, I was little worried that, due to the circumstances surrounding my youngest's growth and interaction, that he'd suffer for it in the long run. My second son was essentially a "Covid-Kid", missed out on a lot of social interaction his older brother had due to lockdowns and restrictions. He started nursery not too long ago though, and he's a hell of a lot smarter than I give him credit for. He's also picked up a lot in his sessions at nursery and his vocabulary is impressive right now too.

They're both growing up pretty good. My youngest is a bit of demon with the attitude though. Very shout heavy, can use words (not perfectly) to convey what he needs but tends to shout and scream a lot anyway lol. I'd be lying if I said it doesn't piss me off a little, but it is what it is. Was hard to get used to at first because his older brother was a really quiet kid growing up.

Because the way you phrased your post is the one that's thinly veiled. You obviously have a specific event in mind, why don't you share with the class exactly what you're talking about?

Like, man up and have a discussion.

Or wait, are you just making shit up?

I mean, I'll speak for him with my own take if that makes you happy.

Brexit for me, served as the catalyst for people to broadly showcase or suddenly develop some form of blind, misguided nationalism. Due to an emphasis on "taking our country back" and "sovereignty", more and more people seemed to flip a switch that had them behaving or openly talking about the likes of any type of immigration negatively, as well as talking about immigrants negatively. This resulted in an uptick of openly racist behaviour towards a variety of ethnic groups within London, and out here, in the Valleys tends to be much worse.

It's not the sort of nationalism, nor racism that ultimately leads to violence or oppression of minorities, it's the openness of it all. People feeling emboldened to talk in such ways so openly.

I'm not looking to have a discussion on why Brexit was or wasn't bad in the grand scheme of things, but in my experience, things have taken a more negative path on that front.

To clarify, I don't think England, or the UK as a whole is a shithole. I love my country, I'm patriotic. I miss London too. The peace and quiet in the countryside is great for my wife, kids and I, but I miss the bustling city. I still believe that there has been an uptick (not based on shitty journalistic reporting but my own, lived-in experience) of blind nationalism and a brazen kind of openness to racism or some form of prejudice.

You're free to disagree with whatever I have said, I'm not going to offer a follow-up rebuttal to what you say, as lived-in experience and anecdotal takes, however small, however large, don't typically fare well in debates for a lot of people.

Anyway, respect, have a good day.

That doesn't really extend to the countryside so much though, take it from somebody who left that concrete jungle for valleys.

^ That makes me laugh.

"That green shite" is showing off lol.

Honestly, I live in the countryside and from what I've seen here, compared to when I lived back in London? Most people don't seem to have a clue as to what seasoning is, or how to marinate. Pretty sure they don't use stock either. A lot of it is flavourless and the eating out / take-away options are actually pretty weak. Usually just a Fish & Chip shop, or a kebab shop of some sort.

London's food scene is quite diverse and if there's one thing I miss about London, it's that.

My wife just set up a new greenhouse recently, growing her own seasoning. Wants to grow potatoes, pepper and strawberries too. Looking forward to the results of that.

wearing shoes indoors/to bed but thats more an american thing than a western thing

I do wear shoes indoors, but I have a nice relatively clean and well maintained pair to stroll around in, I have my outdoor sneaks or boots for other things on the rack. I know that bothers some people lol.

clapping/cheering during movies at a theatre. people just want to watch the movie they paid to see.

This one, as an Englishman genuinely bugs me. I've never quite understood the need for all of the nonsense around that. Cheering, clapping and wooing during a movie just seems odd to me lol.

I never said they don't, I've just never seen it happen lol.

I tend to enjoy cuisine that isn't really from the UK anyway. Thai / Chinese is great. Indian food tends to be an option too.

Beans aren't bad, I just don't find them breakfast worthy.

It's funny, I've been all over the UK (born in London, but I'd travel due to football / soccer quite often) and I have NEVER seen anybody eating beans for breakfast.

I usually see people have variants of the Full English, typically trading things in, like beans or black pudding for something else, like an extra egg, sausage or bacon.

I'd settle for some French toast in morning to be honest lol.

I may start capturing pictures of the food my wife & I cook, don't normally bother as it's the sort of thing people on social media do lol, not usually my thing.
