Been a long time since I've read (funnily enough I'm current rereading The Hobbit a little before bed each night and will eventually work my way back through the trilogy), but he's a considerably more admirable figure in the books, even though he's being corrupted and still meets the same fate. Pretty sure at one point he was even getting armored up to lead the defense of Minas Tirith.

Strangely, these ads neglect to mention the crippling shortage of teachers we're now experiencing due to his aggressively anti-education policies and rhetoric.

Yeah, I'm pretty forgiving of the artistic liberties / adaptation limitations of the LotR trilogy, but Faramir, Denethor, and (in small ways) Boromir got done dirty. Removing the palantir as a factor radically changed Denethor's character trajectory. But honestly the thing that bugs me the most about this situation is that Pippin offering his service to the steward in payment for Boromir's sacrifice is supposed to be a moment of great nobility, and it's reduced to a cheap joke when Gandalf grumbles and shoves him aside.

Having said that, these and certain other characters in the books were noble and admirable almost to a point of implausibility, at least for modern sensibilities - there's an argument to be made in favor of the movies making them more deeply flawed and human.

Even for Christians who haven't actually read the Bible (most of them), one of the simplest lessons you learn is that, if you go to Heaven having been devout your whole life, and see someone else in Heaven who sinned their whole life and repented at the last minute, you don't go up to St. Peter and bitch about the supposed unfairness of it.

This isn't the same thing but it reminds me of the thing you get in FFVII that is like 1/12 figure, which I always thought it meant 1 of 12 and you never come across 11 others, but it actually is referring to the 1/12th scale

I fell for this too, and tried to collect all 12 of them (though I think it was 1/35th scale, which was that much more maddening). As a young teen I was absolutely convinced that there was some secret way to canonically revive Aeris, and every little weird collectible item was some piece of the puzzle.

I blame Symphony of the Night for this mentality: the trail of breadcrumbs that lead to the Reverse Castle convinced me that all games of that era probably had some great secret with massive payoff if you were willing to unravel the clues.

I don't think it's that unpopular. The way I understand it is that Arkham City's the only one that arguably tops it (I only played Asylum and City, so can't comment on the rest), and there's been enough growing disdain for open-world games in recent years that would probably knock City down a peg in popularity.

I thought it was a one-off thing that the Police Station had them, but the next two sets I bought (Assembly Square and Boutique Hotel) also had them. One of them's old-fashioned with the suspended tank, nearly all of them have toilet paper (represented by a simple 1x1 white round brick), and I'm pretty sure one even came with a plunger. Hell, even the Lion's Knight Castle has a dedicated privy / garderobe, complete with a poop-chute to the outer wall and a suspiciously brown-colored toad sitting on the ground far below.

Granted you probably have to spring for the advanced / expensive sets to get them, but it's still a detail I never would've expected seeing in a Lego set as a kid.

Season 5 of Breaking Bad. The Nazi plot was fucking pathetic after the high of Gus Fring.

It could have been better, but I'm used to the fact that rise-and-fall crime stories typically hit their peak around the middle; unless the criminal protagonist goes out in a blaze of glory a la Scarface, the 'fall' is typically a slow, sad descent.

Worst part of it all is how great a character Marie becomes in S5 and the lil BCS appearance.

I liked Marie more as the show went on. The klepto thing was a bit random in its first iteration - the show was still fairly new and they didn't quite know what to do with all the side characters yet - but I actually thought it was fitting when she relapsed. She was putting up with a lot of shit from Hank while he was wheelchair-bound - which finally garnered her some much-needed sympathy, at least from me - and it was her way of acting out in a situation where she felt trapped.
