Characterizing people as "proponents of gender reassignment surgery" kind of misses the point. People exist who love the idea and want more people to have it just because they love it so much, but they're not a particularly significant demographic. Instead, what those you are calling "proponents" support is making sure trans people are able to access the care they need to treat their dysphoria as best as possible. In some cases, that includes surgery, but that's a decision they should make with their doctor, not something that needs to be promoted on its own merits.

Mostly, it's not about encouraging surgery, it's about getting transphobes to leave the whole concept alone so science and medicine can do their job and help people feel better, whatever form that ends up taking.

Honestly, I liked the sequel well enough, but pretty much exclusively for the fun of building up a team of monsters. It was kind of a nifty Pokemon-lite sort of experience, and I did have some fun with it.

As a successor to Symphonia, though, it fell totally flat and completely failed to explore the legitimately interesting premise of what happens when the two worlds are forced back together and have to deal with how relatively impoverished Sylvarant was relative to Tethe'alla. I won't disagree with that.

Yes, games actually are cheaper than they used to be. Adjusting for inflation BotW would be $73 today. And not only that, but constantly inflating dev time and budgets, increasing the price tag was inevitable.

That's not the whole picture. Simply adjusting for inflation, it makes sense, but that inflation hasn't happened in a vacuum. Purchasing power (which is a huge factor in assessing the appropriate price for luxury purchases like video games) has not increased by anywhere close to the margin by which other prices have inflated. Increases in game budgets have been offset by improvements in technology that make games cheaper to make, meaning that games are only actually more expensive to make when studios choose to make them more expensive. The game market as a whole has grown and sales have increased across the board in a way that mostly offsets (and, in fact, is the reason for) increases in budgets.

Most significantly, most games already make quite a bit more than $60 each for their publishers. DLC, microtransactions, loot boxes, battle passes, subscription fees, premium editions... The simple fact of the matter is that the game industry's revenue has been growing since long before the usual suspects started whining about "needing" to increase MSRP to $70 to offset growing costs, and it would have been growing even if they stuck to $60. That MSRP increased is 100% a matter of wanting to grow *faster* (not just to turn a profit) and those publishers feeling like the market had reached a point where the extra revenue would offset the PR hit.

Now, Nintendo hasn't embraced post-purchase monetization to the same degree as most other publishers, and given some of their history (namely the entire executive team voluntarily taking a pay cut when the WiiU and 3DS were struggling instead of laying off workers to recover losses) and the current cost of living crisis, I could believe that this is a matter of needing to increase their revenue because they otherwise can't pay their staff as much as they want to. It may also just be a matter of them feeling that this is a good time to get away with increasing their prices, especially on a high-profile title like Zelda that everyone will buy at just about any price. It's probably a bit of both. Either way, I'm more sympathetic to Nintendo wanting to increase prices than somebody like EA or Actiblizz.

The bottom line, though, is that "games are cheaper than ever" is very much not the whole picture. At a market level, games are making more money than ever, so suggesting that a price increase is needed to turn a profit is more than a little disingenuous, in many cases.

Krow_Incarnate posted...
Lmao at people justifying this when the current industry is thriving and making more money than ever off garbage practices like the gacha business model that's snaked it's way into AAA titles on major platforms.

Get the fuck outta here

It's a good thing I couldn't give less of a shit about Zelda.

While that's a valid criticism of the industry in general, unless Zelda actually has gacha mechanics or other such monetization, that's not a particularly valid criticism of Zelda specifically.

papercup posted...
I know it doesn't fit the narrative that game prices have always been $60,

It's really only since the 360 that MSRP was standardized at $60. A lot of the fluctuation in prices for SNES games and the like was because of different cartidge costs (bigger games needed different cartridges that were just more expensive), but I remember even GC games varied pretty wildly sometimes. "Games must always be $60" is a relatively recent development, as much as people like to treat it like it's been true forever.

I hope they improve the weapon durability for Breath of the Wild 2. I still need to play the first one though.

Honestly, the durability isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Early-game, it's a meaningful survival mechanic that you have to overcome intelligently, but it pretty quickly gets downgraded to little more than a minor annoyance, which gets increasingly minor as you progress. I'd still say it ultimately wasn't a very good idea (or at least, wasn't a very good implementation of what could have been a better idea), but it's not that bad.

If it's totally absent from TotK, I won't miss it, especially where it doesn't look like we're going with the "build yourself up from nothing" start that BotW had.

As much as the "game prices haven't kept up with inflation and we need more revenue!" narrative is largely bullshit coming from Actiblizz, Ubisoft, EA, and other publishers that have been stuffing their games with predatory monetization strategies that earn them significantly more revenue than the MSRP does (whether it's $60 or $70), at least I can kind of respect it coming from Nintendo, who has generally been pretty reasonable with their post-purchase monetization and not milking consumers for every possible cent. It's still lame, but the game will probably be well worth $70, so it won't deter me from buying it. If that becomes the norm for Switch games, though, it'll lead to me waiting for more sales or just buying fewer games (though really, I could maintain the same budget by skipping every 7th game I would otherwise buy, which isn't completely unreasonable).

And then they made Alvis a villain? But not Pythra? The anti-XC1 bias w/ XC3 is getting downright noxious at this point...

That's... a reach, to say the least. For one thing, Alvis appeared for all of 10 seconds and said nothing, so getting "he's a villain" from that is absolutely jumping to conclusions. For another, Alvis has always been aggressively neutral, siding with Zanza when it was appropriate to do so to fulfill his role in fate's machinations, and siding with Shulk when that was the appropriate choice. Pneuma, on the other hand, was unambiguously good (with a few harmful mistakes along the way), in contrast to Malos being unambiguously bad (with some questions about his culpability in that). On top of that, Pyra and Mythra remained as active characters after the ending of 2, clearly allying themselves (in the biblical sense WINKYFACE) with Rex and the others, whereas Alvis completely vanished and nobody knew where he was or why. There's absolutely zero reason to expect to end up fighting Pneuma unless Shulk ends up fighting Rex (not implausible), but plenty of plausible scenarios where we end up fighting Alvis. To end up fighting Alvis and not Pneuma is not "anti-XC1 bias," it just makes sense within the established facts of the series' story.

I also really don't know what you're talking about when you accuse XC3 of being riddled with "anti-XC1 bias," and I say this as someone who considered XC1 to be his favourite game ever before 3 managed the monumental feat of dethroning it (i.e. not exactly a fanboy of 2).

If you blow off anything that explores characters just because they'll eventually end up dead (or otherwise stop having stories written about them), you'll never end up enjoying any stories at all. If you aren't interest, just don't be interested. You don't have to justify it by making up some nonsense reason.

it's baby money compared to most other subscription crap. I get the frustration but it was very cheap initially and still damn cheap for a whole year.

As prices go, it's dirt cheap, but it also doesn't exactly give a lot for that price. I'm generally okay paying for base NSO when I want online play, but I let it lapse after I finish with those games and I don't really miss anything I lose when I do so. The higher tier is even harder to defend, given that it only gives access to a handful of extra retro games and DLC for games that I don't even have/still play.

it is lame how much Nintendo drip-feeds their old content to us though.

It really is. I'd gladly pay $50/year for the ability to stream any of Nintendo's retro games at will, but the way they make 99% of their retro library unavailable is just stupid.

It's also kind of lame that we aren't getting more GC or Wii games lumped in with "retro," despite the fact that the Wii is now as old as the SNES was when the Wii launched (and the Wii went up to N64 games). GC games are getting remakes and ports and whatnot, but nothing in the vein of the Virtual Console (presumably because those remakes and ports are making more money than VC releases would).

It's accurate to frame divorce as a failure of the marriage. What's less accurate is framing it as a personal failure. Sometimes, marriages just don't work out for reasons beyond either partner's realistic control or ability to predict. People often resist the idea of divorcing because they view it as a personal failure and don't want to accept that, but that's often not a very healthy way to approach the issue. Try to fix whatever issues are threatening a marriage, certainly, but if the best option for everyone is to divorce, don't be afraid of taking that option instead of resisting it for so long that there's too much resentment to divorce amicably.

Source?

I don't remember where I saw the point that there are technical issues preventing a straight emulated port, so that may have been me reading between lines, but some quick digging is bringing up several articles that reference an interview with Takahashi from 2018:

https://www.gameinformer.com/2018/10/18/monolith-soft-says-a-xenoblade-chronicles-x-switch-port-would-be-too-expensive

Basically, a rerelease would involve remaking enough of it that it's prohibitively expensive and kind of a gamble for the series' worst-selling entry. That it's the worst-selling isn't necessarily X's fault so much as it is the WiiU's (in terms of how much of each system's install base owns each game, X is actually the highest in the entire Xeno franchise by a huge margin), but it's still a very different game from the other three and would not be a cheap port. Maybe something has changed since 2018 (like Monolith learning how to milk every drop of performance they could out of the Switch for 3 and being able to apply that to port X more efficiently, or DE showing that there's plenty of potential for a Xenoblade port to outsell the original with a stronger release), but I kind of doubt it.

I do, however, expect an X port on whatever Nintendo's next system is, especially if the post-3 direction for Xenoblade is to pick up where X forgot to end. Presumably, making the game work won't be as difficult with an extra generation of oomph behind it.

Probably altitude issues. 65,000 feet is the absolute maximum altitude an F-22 can handle, so cruising at a more comfortable altitude and letting the unmanned, less expensive missile handle the last few thousand feet was probably a less risky option than trying to gun it down.

I've been following Harry McEntire's playthrough of it on Twitch, which I pretty much never do for games like this (if I watch any game being streamed, it's something where I can enjoy seeing build variety), and it's just as amazing watching it through again and is actually making me want to do a NG+ run so I can go through it again. Yeah, given that shooting it down involved one of the air force's most advanced fighter jets and an AtA missile, rather than any sort of surface anti-air weaponry (even the stuff available to the military), I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that no consumer-grade firearm is going to come close. My understanding is that the Switch actually isn't powerful enough to port it. X pushed the WiiU to its absolute breaking point, such that without rebuilding it entirely from scratch (to avoid having to run a WiiU emulator on top of what the game requires), the Switch can't handle it. The Gamepad functions would be missed (along with WWHD, that was a game that benefited hugely from having a gamepad map), but it wouldn't be the end of the world to not have them. Still, though, I'm not holding my breath for a port.

I'm mostly just hoping for Xenoblade 3 DLC news, especially anything about the final part. I'm not expecting much, though, since wave 4 isn't scheduled to come out until December and there's still wave 3 to announce. I don't remember when Torna was first announced, but I'm guessing it was closer to its release (possibly around E3, for a holiday release).

If anything, people are now more likely to put in the effort to work through rough patches, instead of divorcing at the first sign of trouble.

Not to say that left-wing politics aren't also incomplete and insincere at times, but the whole concept of "trickle down economics" is one that Reagan popularized in the 80's and the GOP has been frantically humping ever since because it makes them the best friend of many of the richest voters in the country.

Brilliant troll. Please tell me "Turning Point" is political satire.

Close: It's a non-profit dedicated to preaching right-wing politics (often pretty far right) to young adults, effectively acting as a propaganda arm for the GOP that specifically targets impressionable new voters. All the same ludicrous insanity that you usually get with political satire, but none of that "not real so it doesn't hurt anyone" business that makes actual satire so boring.

Do they not have Ghibli stuff? I thought Disney had the rights to those.

In Canada, Netflix still has at least most of the Ghibli catalogue. I'm guessing the licenses just haven't expired yet.

Especially considering the original characterizations were rife for conflict. Instead they just made up new characters and then called people racists for not liking the show. Great way to garner a fandom.

Indeed. There was tons of room to make a more adult series about Scooby Doo and the gang while remaining true to what's been established, but they just didn't do that.

Tell her you either need to start charging her for the time, gas, and car wear, or she'll have to figure out a different way to get to work. You can give her some time to sort things out, but ultimately you need to say no to her. Yes, that'll result in her leaning on your mom/brother instead, but preventing that isn't your responsibility. Support them as needed to also say no to her, but don't let your desire to make things easier for them leave you stuck with the burden of dealing with her.

The bottom line is that you can't stop somebody from being selfishly codependent by enabling their selfish codependency. You have to tell them there's a problem and work with them to solve it.

Big Mouth being a new IP versus taking an existing IP, claim youre placing it into adult situations, but then strip everything out of it to make it recognizable to the original IP
theres a bit of a difference.

Pretty much. If you try to capitalize on an existing franchise, forcing it to be something that's completely unrelated to that franchise outside of the names and vague character designs is mostly just going to bother people.

I need to enter in a name and contact info and it automatically remind me to contact them at these intervals:

* 48hrs
* 1 week
* 3 weeks
* 5 weeks
* 7 weeks
* 9 weeks
* 11 weeks

It's not exactly a planner app, but you can configure Excel to do that for you pretty easily, then just check a dashboard at the start of every day for a list of who you need to contact that day.

Literally just calendar reminders in outlook.

Also that.

Why are you bringing underage children into the conversation? I have no problems with sex tourism, so long as it involves consenting adults.

Because underage sex tourism is quite common in Thailand, to the point where there's ample reason to suspect that any man travelling there alone - especially on a regular basis - is going for that reason. That's what this topic is talking about.

It's not a strawman, you just didn't understand the topic at hand well enough to realize what you were suggesting.

Don't judge someone unless you have proof.

He isn't being judged, he's just being suspected.

I mean, having a spy balloon publicly flaunt your sovereignty is a pretty big f***ing issue and the current inaction is setting a pretty lousy precedent for how these things will be handled

You say this like both countries don't have plenty of other spy equipment already running. US-China espionage is a very open secret, and only the most serious threats are ever acted upon because employing violence to deal with more minor threats would be diplomatically unwise. This balloon is less a serious espionage threat and more a little bit of nationalistic dick-waving. The only thing genuinely at stake is the egos of those involved, and the fact that you seem to be personally offended by it says a lot about your priorities.

My dude, the words are right there. We can all read them. Trying to pretend you were only being a transphobic turdmuffin instead of also being a homophobic turdmuffin isn't going to work (to say nothing of the fact that nobody giving you a hard time for this thinks that's any better).

To be fair, I do generally rank murderers higher on the dinglenugget scale than homophobes, so the comparison isn't entirely justified.

Though homophobes are still at least a solid 478/dinglenugget.
