Love using Tita. A lot of my choice in character use stems from multi-hitting on septium turns. Even after I've already past the point of needing septium in games, like NG+ runs, I still base my strats around getting lots and lots and lots of gems flying out of enemies at once.

I tend to die more often than I should =P

Dang, missed two days of betting.

I'll bet on... Young Frankenstein.

As for Popstar & This is Spinal Tap, I need to watch them both again because I remember next-to-nothing about each of them.

Spinal Tap
- "It goes to 11."
- Stonehenge
- The pod getting stuck
- "Old Joe's Place" except that was SNL/A Mighty Wind/The Folksmen

Popstar
- "Humble" and the The Marcels' sample (Yep Werp Hum Bull)
- Tim Meadows
- A turtle?
- It returning to mind Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" and just no

While there's some heavily outdated humor and too much scatological jokes, I have to give NATM credit for three things:

  1. Its expansive array of parodies across the high school spectrum of the 80s and 90s are done extremely well. She's All That, Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, American Pie, Never Been Kissed, Cruel Intentions, Can't Hardly Wait, American Beauty, Bring It On, Varsity Blue, Rudy, 10 Things I Hate About You, Lucas, I think even The Faculty just by having the same foul-mouthed too-intense coach. It's stuffed full, but it's done well.
  2. The cast. Chris Evans. Chyler Leigh. Eric Christian Olsen. Mia Kirshner. Lacey Chabert. Mr. T. Melissa Joan Hart... as someone who grew up at this time, pretty much everyone is recognizable in some way. And due to the structure of the movie and how close it is to She's All That, I had to double-check that Dule Hill & Elden Hensen... and Kieran Culkin weren't part of the cast either?! Wow. My memory is blurred.
  3. Some of the jokes are just burned in my memory. The opening toy scene. Jake Wyler's picture. The albino hippie. The slow clap guy. Melissa Joan Hart doing the yearbook thing again. The two token black guys. The spilled water on the dress cry. The over-dramatic paintings. The concussion clock. The Breakfast Club detention scene. The banana. Stolen cheers. The makeover scene. "Prom Tonight." Choreographed dance.
Now I'm itching to watch this, She's all That, and Can't Hardly Wait again.

I was extremely surprised by how good RotLD was, especially with its gross cover art. It was actually a solid, and scary, movie. The slow turn of the starting characters, the fairly normal decisions of a lot of the characters winding up actually being bad outcomes, the absolute terror of chopped up body parts still moving independently, cremation spreading the virus, the explanation of pain from that one zombie, the basement zombie... it was all-around much better than expected. It would maybe make my top half just because there is still a lot of cheese and slow parts.

Guessing Not Another Teen Movie :P

The military misplaced zombie canisters and took the best part of 20 years to find them again. The recipient of said canisters doesnt report the error, instead showing them off to employees and then hitting them, which releases the zombifying gas. The canisters werent even well made and properly secured! Zombie outbreaks are usually caused by unforeseen problems, but this one was entirely avoidable.

I mean, how farfetched would it actually be if, say, a dean of a community college found a really good deal on some old army surplus meat to serve for its Halloween party? Come on~

The Interview is a movie I have very little memory of. The only two scenes I can recall with any clarity are the Eminem scene and the Firework scene. Other than that, I remember feeling underwhelmed.

Seeing it this low means I'll need to reconsider my bare memories of two other similar movies that I ranked lower.

I'll guesssss.... hmmm.... I was thinking about Borat, but those write-ups respect more ballsy skewerings so I'll instead go withhh..........

Still betting with Freshman until it's gone.

Had Stripes 20/27, but it's not fresh in memory and reading the write-ups... yeah, it's not as much a buddy comedy as I remember. Harold Ramis was great, and seeing a bunch of SCTV actors is fun, and the RV stuff makes no sense but is the best part of the movie. Bill Murray is definitely grating, just from remembering him as a cabbie at the beginning. I'd probably rank it lower had I watched it. ...There really was no plot, was there.

Estimated rank: 25/30.

Part of me wants to suggest a Bill Murray gauntlet, but I don't think there's enough variety to justify getting more people to watch St. Vincent.

Got a few books as Christmas presents, and really enjoyed The Secret Life of Bees the most of all of them. Also just read The Chill by Scott Carson and that was a very good thriller, felt very Stephen King, a good ride.

I'm considering finally tackling Rhythm of War in The Stormlight Archive (last read Oathbringer maybe in fall 2021 before starting up the Mistborn trilogy), but Trails to Azure come out on Steam in two weeks and I want to play Zero NG+ before then, play Azure, then finish further replays of Cold Steel I & II, then finally get to Cold Steel III. I mean, that's appropriate here as those games are practically books, right?

My friend recommended The Broken Earth and A Memory Called Empire, but I was intimidated by the early denseness (and read other recs Left Hand of Darkness and Parable of the Sower instead). What are some further persuasions on these?

Also, The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali was really, really good. It's about a young woman's romance just before the Iranian Revolution and class politics, generational and familial tolerances, and past-influencing-the-present-influencing-the-future. Really solid, much recommend.

Either this game is more difficult than the usual for a JRPG or I'm failing to get something.

I think FC has a great deal of difficulty, especially early on, just because you pretty much don't have any cushion. Your spell pool is extremely limited, your crafts are few, you don't have much money and what you do have needs to be spent wisely, and the enemies are really strong against what you have available.

I think the difficulty eases up as you get more options to play with. As I was typing all that out, I think a great analogy would be Pokemon RB. Remember when you first played Pokemon and how you're stuck with Tackle/Scratch and Growl/Tail Whip for a while, and a lot of your money is being spent on Potions and Antidotes because you keep running out (especially in Red since Weedle are far more prevalent)? And then you hit Brock, and if you started with Charmander, you're in for a world of hurt? But once you get to make a more varied team, the game is still difficult but you can reassess and reorganize your party and try out different things to tackle problems? That's FC with spell set-ups and accessorizing and new enemy types, etc.

FC is brutal at first. I hate hate hate those plants on the Mainz Path. I love just smashing all those enemies in NG+ with ease. Very cathartic.

In my brain, and as someone who hasn't really played since Pearl, I have this notion in my head that Barrier & Light Screen can't be used together? Like, one cancels the other if they are used after?

Just some tangential clarification required. I'm seeing the Luminaire tech potentially doing less than the Frenzy tech because Light Screen could defend against both of the first whilst the second dual would target both Def & Sp.Def and Mewtwo could only mitigate one of them. But that's also assuming Mewtwo has any recourse against a start of battle surprise round, ESPECIALLY since it would be negating defensive moves to use Psychic on Aigis at the same time.

I was for Aigis in the beginning: knowing layout, knowing location of one of two opponents at all times, have range and healing and buffs and firepower... all excellent excellent strategies. But a giant DK and a badass Bowser just remaking Wrecking Crew.... what's the first thing DK ever does besides kidnapping Pauline?

....

Okay, so backtracking all I just typed. My memories are clearly of the Game Boy game.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/QMb6ObDPlXk?start=116&end=122

Just massive structural damage. Yeah, DK/Bowser are tearing through the place searching for Aigis, and may just bring the whole place down around them if they get frustrated by her kites.

I can still be swayed towards Aigis, but huge lean right now to team House Party.

Liquid's interaction with Kiryu needs a full Drakeryn journal entry.

There's elements in here I'm excited to see debated later. Lea vs. Vivi is a spectacle of fast flying projectiles reflected back and forth. I'm sure Lea wins in the end one-on-one, but there's so much fun collateral damage to be had and survived.

And I know Snake in MGS would often have to physically tap into his comms to talk over Codec. I don't know if things were different for Liquid or changed up later on. I'm just imagining Liquid driving one handed and trying to give advice or talk because he loves to do that and he just keeps going back from wheel to ear to wheel, and he could just not drive, but then how would he get the adorable waddling mage to the battle? And how distracted is he when he can't monologue at length? When his vocabularly is as handicapped as his body?

Liquid and Vivi crash and die before battle. Don't talk on the phone while driving, kids. Especially when you drive on through this arm.
