| Topic | Lotta accidents on the road tonight |
| adjl 11/01/22 8:01:45 PM #8 | Sahuagin posted... something I always find depressing is that if you try to look up a recent accident it's usually pretty difficult (I've never succeeded) to find because there are so many accidents, all you can find are articles of past accidents in the same place There's an intersection here that used to see significant accidents pretty much every week because it's got a fairly busy cross street with only a stop sign controlling it, pretty poor visibility from the cross street, and people tend to speed quite heavily on the main street. There was a guy who lives on one of the corners who pretty much dedicated his Twitter account to chronicling the accidents and tagging various city councillors every time (usually in the form of "oh look there's a car in my yard again"). One week, it was so bad that residents came together and just piled their municipal garbage bins in the middle of the intersection to act as a makeshift traffic-calming measure, coming shortly after the city stated that they couldn't put any traffic-calming measures in because it's a bus route (which, as somebody who spent most of a decade taking that bus almost every day, is nonsense because there's absolutely no reason the bus can't be slowed down at that point). A few months back, they finally added some 4-way stops, though they did it to the intersections on either side of the offending one instead of the problem one. I do think that makes sense, though, since it slows people down through the problem area instead of trying to stop them right at it, and it means that anyone that accidentally blows one of the stop signs will realize their mistake and be more cautious as they approach the intersection instead of having their mistake result in them going through the intersection wildly. And, surprise surprise, the bus hasn't exploded. Who knew? --- This is my signature. It exists to keep people from skipping the last line of my posts. |

| adjl 11/01/22 10:24:07 AM #27 | Depends on the sauce. If it's something that whips together in 5 minutes, freezing it in bulk doesn't make much sense. If it's a sauce you make by simmering things down for a couple hours and pureeing them, freezing a litre or two (in ~1-cup portions) can potentially save you quite a bit of time over making a new batch every time you run out. The way I see it, if it's food you know you will eat in the foreseeable future and freezing it will save you time, money, or both, it's a worthwhile use of freezer space. Whether or not it's more worthwhile than the other things in your freezer will, of course, be a personal judgement call based on what you want to keep and how much space you have, but I wouldn't say this is automatically going to be a waste. --- This is my signature. To be fair, the concept of Hell exists in the real world as well, and most forms of Christianity accept the premise that if you sincerely repent for your sins before dying you still get to go to Heaven even if you were a total monster for decades. The issue with this characterization is that people tend to underestimate what "sincerely repent" entails (both those looking to disparage Christianity and those looking to sell salvation to people with guilty consciences). Sincere repentance entails recognizing that one has done something wrong, understanding why it's wrong, and making a genuine effort to correct it to the best of one's ability. The term "repent" inherently implies personal change, as much as a whole lot of people are content to just say "I love Jesus" and leave it at that. --- This is my signature. | adjl 10/31/22 1:55:36 PM #35 | Sahuagin posted... maybe there are better examples if Coca Cola has like 2 colors or something; the more colors are involved the more valid it becomes to be protected Yeah, Coca-Cola's a bad example because their colour scheme is literally just red and white. If they start suing people for using that, they're going to be suing Canada, Switzerland, and Japan (perhaps not if the exact shade of red doesn't match, but this illustrates the point nicely). The question, then, is how many colours have to be shared to count as infringement. I get that there's value in "I put together this palette of 47 colours that work well together to convey a certain theme," since there is a non-trivial amount of research and creativity that goes into generating those palettes and that work ought to be rewarded and not ripped off, but I don't know where the line should be drawn to avoid being overtly dystopian. Even then, though, where colours exist independently of what any artist does and it's so easy to arrive at similar colour palettes without even knowing that somebody else has come up with them before (and, realistically, somebody probably already has for just about any combination), I can't help but feel that that's going to be too broad a trademark to be reasonable. That said, I can understand selling the convenience value of having the colours you want pre-arranged into a palette so you don't have to manually set them up. That's not copyrighting the colour scheme, it's just charging people for the convenience. To tie that to a subscription fee and break people's files if that fee lapses, however, is definitely scummy. --- This is my signature. Your search results are generally adjusted based on what the algorithm expects you'll want to see, particularly trying to show you new content that it expects you'll want. Everything about the algorithm is designed to keep you on the site for as long as possible, even after you find the video you're looking for, so it'll recommend you stuff and give you search results that it expects will pique your interest and keep you clicking. I get the font analogy, but fonts are at least artwork: Each individual character is a picture that somebody has created. Coming up with a colour palette is an act of creativity, but the individual colours themselves exist regardless of what anyone does. Copyrighting pigments to provide those colours is fair game (unless your name is Anish Kapoor), but in the digital world, it's all just a matter of RGB values that require no proprietary technology to generate or interpret, so claiming any sort of ownership of that is just stupid. --- This is my signature. | Topic | Bayonetta's VA not reprising her role in 3 because she was only offered $4k |
| adjl 10/29/22 11:52:10 AM #165 | streamofthesky posted... It's really weird to see the "support VA workers' rights!" brigade ask, "why not just have the corporation last-second cancel some of its workers' weekends to deal some stupid twitter s*** storm?" It'd be one tweet, dude. Literally anyone with access to the corporate account could handle it without getting out of bed and probably claim an hour's overtime for that 30 seconds of work. Heck, an executive could handle that, so it doesn't even have to be some bottom-rung employee having that dumped on them. I can also pretty much guarantee that, whether they published anything or not, the PR manager was monitoring the situation and communicating with the higher-ups all weekend. That's the nature of PR management: PR situations that need to be handled aren't limited to 9-5 M-F, so sometimes the position is going to require after-hours and weekend work. That's not a bad thing (provided the expectations of the job are made clear from the outset, they're compensated appropriately, and that expectation isn't abused), it's just the nature of the job. I can also pretty much guarantee that same PR person would be working over 1-2 extra weekends even if she released her statement on a Monday, since a situation like this warrants longer-term monitoring to watch how the situation evolves and respond as appropriate. There's also a good chance they're putting in some overtime already because it was two weeks before one of the studio's highest-profile game launches. That's not to say it couldn't end up being some minimum-wage temp being asked to go into the office to stare at Twitter all weekend, but it very much doesn't have to be, such that assuming that's what I'm suggesting is just plain silly. streamofthesky posted... Maybe because it could wait till Monday? So there was no actual benefit to making the claim on a Friday afternoon, despite you repeatedly bringing it up as though it's a deliberate part of a well-planned slander campaign? streamofthesky posted... Maybe because they wanted to take some time and put together their official response, an approach the losers on twitter could learn from. The official response is "We offered her $15k for the actual job. $4k was for a cameo appearance after she turned down the full job. Proof is available if any journalists want to corroborate this claim." That doesn't take time to put together. What does take time is consulting their lawyers to figure out what they can legally say without violating their end of the NDA or straying into the territory of defaming Taylor, which has nothing to do with taking the time to avoid jumping to conclusions and everything to do with the fact that they're in a position where saying the wrong thing can get them sued. streamofthesky posted... Kamiya said flat out it was lies, and look how that worked out for him. He said the rough equivalent of "It's all lies and if anyone questions me I'll ban them immediately!" That's not exactly a good PR response that's going to do anything to convince anyone that Platinum's in the right. He acted guilty, so people presumed guilt. As I've said many times throughout this: Game companies categorically do not deserve the benefit of the doubt in questions of employee welfare. There are too many blatant abuses that showcase some of the worst aspects of free market capitalism to presume innocence, such that it can very safely be assumed that any apparent new examples of those abuses are probably legitimate. If they subsequently prove the claims are not legitimate (and actually prove that, none of this "Activision Blizzard has conducted a thorough investigation of Activision Blizzard and determined that Activision Blizzard did nothing wrong" nonsense), then you can let them off the hook, but in terms of public opinion, corporations should be kept on the defensive whenever allegations like this come up. Trust is earned, and the games industry has done the exact opposite of earning that trust. Now, continuing to try to come up with new ways to criticize the company to avoid changing one's mind after information comes out to prove that the claims against them aren't legitimate? That is indeed stupid. But that's entirely separate from the decision to attack the company as soon as it appeared they had done wrong. There's a part of me that's wondering if she was put up to this by another industry figure for the sake of discrediting the movement to improve VA compensation, since she's going to be brought up to paint VA's as just being greedy whenever anyone tries to make progress in that area now.
