I mean it sounds smart to say these were always problems and it hasn't aged poorly but aging is pretty much "when the novelty wears off"

Aging doesn't mean there weren't problems to begin with. It never means that. Games aren't people they don't develop problems as they become older.

It means that they weren't as glaring at the time because people were excited about some other thing and aren't as much, or the things wrong with it become more obvious with an increasing amount of superior examples out there etc etc.
Sure but my argument here is explicitly "a lot of these problems were just as glaring at the time".

It hasn't but people exaggerate how badly it's aged. Problems like the low FPS (especially when a lot is happening on screen) were obvious and annoying even when the game was new.

Most of these are pretty good picks, even if they're not the choices I would have gone for. In particular I'd probably have a different pick for Galaxy and its sequel, maybe more than one even.

Honestly I don't think 1-1 belongs here. Like it's clearly iconic but putting that aside I'm not sure what it does to earn it such a high placement.

DOOM (2016, Steam)

What a good shooter. I do wish there was more variety later on -- the last couple levels don't have any new enemies and by that point I was pretty much settled on my Super Shotgun / Gauss Rifle combo, so it got a little repetitive. It was fun repetition, though.

I don't think I ever beat it as a kid, which is when I used guides for almost everything. I did finally beat it as an older teenager though and I remember at least needing a guide to beat the Water Temple. It was for a stupid reason, too: I forgot those blue blocks could be removed with an ocarina song (Zelda's Lullaby IIRC) so I got stuck in a room where you need to do that to proceed.

Yeah this, it's becoming such a common cliche that you should instantly be able to assume what it is whenever someone says that.
I honestly fuckin hate this, it's so obnoxious to see a game's description say something like "wholesome fun for the whole family! :D" and not know if it's an accurate description or just a weird lie.

Wouldn't call Outer Wilds an example of that, though. It has spooky moments but less than e.g. Metroid Prime, just to pick another random "explore alien planets" game.

Honestly I'm not sure how I feel about counting this as beaten when all I did was beat all the amateur stages, but there's no way I'm unlocking, much less beating, all the pro stages, so I'm done here. I liked this game at first but the more demanding it got the less I found myself tolerating the control scheme, to say nothing of how unresponsive those controls felt (the plot twist is gonna be that my Steam Deck's left analog stick is just broken or something but god I hope not).

Yeah it would. Would it make me vote for fascists? No, but it would certainly make me less likely donate money or encourage people to vote because it would dampen enthusiasm if it became a core issue.

I really believe degrading womens sports is an attack on women and womens rights is a deep issue to me. It really bothers me the way some men culturally treat women as property and I get the same vibe from some people that they are treating womens sports as some ridiculous afterthought that doesnt matter because it doesnt matter to them.

But like you said, trans athletes make up a tiny proportion of athletes. I dont think its just to set the stage to torpedo the competitiveness of womens sports to accommodate a tiny fraction of women.

I think kids sports is fine, but at the high school and college level it isnt fair.

Also I'm not exactly an expert in this field but this strikes me as kinda trash. Like a lot of the arguments are "there isn't much research on this but it seems like hormone treatment doesn't change [e.g., testosterone levels, muscle mass, whatever] to make trans women identical to cis women, except when it does". As a result a lot of the arguments become "well cis men are superior to cis women, and trans women are basically cis men. QED."

I'm not even saying its conclusions are necessarily wrong, just that we really don't know yet because the research isn't there. Also, this is maybe an unfair criticism but some of the language used has me giving it a big side eye. When you're writing about trans people maybe do some research into how to not sound like a TERF straight out the gate, idk.

River City Girls (Steam)

Love any media about girls who are absolutely feral. The music, cutscenes, and voice acting are all great too. I just wish the actual gameplay was more interesting. The enemy variety is pretty bad and the controls are just as clunky as an actual 90s beat-'em-up, possibly more so. For instance: you have to double tap left or right to run, and you can only run left and right even though you can move in all four directions. It feels somehow much less acceptable in a game from 2019 than it did 2-3 decades ago.

Evan's Remains (Steam)

This is a puzzle platformer with gorgeous pixel art (albeit with character portraits that slightly clash) and a lot of story. It's one of those games like To the Moon and Iconoclasts that clearly had a lot of creativity and passion behind its story, but it just reads as amateurish in a lot of mostly-intangible ways (it's not nearly as bad as Iconoclasts though). The characters are kinda unlikable and while the twists and reveals weren't bad, exactly, they did leave me going "oh okay sure" instead of reacting with like... surprise, or emotion. A few lines seemed poorly translated too so that doesn't help.

The puzzles are all pretty simple and typically center around platforms that disappear as soon as you jump off them -- there's an achievement for spending longer than 15 minutes on any one puzzle, and I did not get that achievement in the process of beating the game, so that probably tells you what the difficulty level is.

I dunno, it's hard to say how I feel about this one, though I definitely don't actively dislike it.
