Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (Steam)

I loved Turok 2 on N64 as a kid but never beat it. First time playing this one and... it kinda sucks! Definitely the worst FPS I've played in my recent FPS spree.

I do appreciate that you start out fighting dinosaurs and dudes with guns but by the end of the game you're just straight up fighting dinosaurs with guns.

Kenri has beaten Hyper Light Drifter

wow that final boss sure can stun-kill you from full HP can't he

I loved this game's aesthetic but I really wish the combat was better. The dodge-dash in particular just feels wrong and even after beating the game I don't really understand the mechanics of it. A game like e.g. Hades plays extremely similarly but is just smoother and better.

Still, it was a fun, if short, experience. I don't think I'm going to be doing 100% though!

I found the mechanics of moving on with a scene to be tedious at best. I really did not like it when they wanted me to move the screen around and try to guess just what the hell they wanted me to do exactly since it changes and is seldom intuitive.
I can definitely agree with all this. I liked the game but I only really tolerated these kinds of issues because I liked everything else.

There are a few cute little touches like the eraser cursor getting smaller the more you use it but overall I think it just padded the game out unnecessarily.

So I managed to get EGS working on my Steam Deck and it was a remarkably painless experience, and HLD works without any fiddling required so that's a bonus.

I already like this protagonist and I'm glad that the game is heavily foreshadowing that absolutely nothing bad will ultimately happen to them =)

I took the west path first and got a few upgrade points and a couple chunks of the west path's diamond, before hitting a seeming dead end. Then I wandered around for a long time not knowing how to progress before realizing, hey, maybe this game is more linear than I assumed. Sure enough the south and east paths seem to dead end immediately, so I took the north path and what do you know, there's a lot of stuff I can do there. I think I have 3 chunks of the north path's diamond now and that's where I called it for the night.

Quake (Steam) and all its expansions

So, first time playing this and I know it's the darling of the OT3 boomer shooter trio (Wolf3D/Doom/Quake) but honestly my first impression was not super positive. My love for Wolf3D is definitely partly nostalgia but I finished Quake with the distinct impression that I liked Wolf3D more.

But... then I played the expansions.

Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity are just good as hell extra campaigns that add new weapons, new enemies, and some much more interesting maps. It ruins the game balance slightly because it gives you a rocket launcher that shoots like 5 rockets at once which 1-2 hits basically everything but that's fun! It's fun to just be able to kill stuff without it being a huge slog.

Then I played Dimension of the Past, which is probably the worst expansion. It's still good but it dials back all the additions from Armagon and Eternity, and it's extremely stingy with ammo so you really have to play conservatively.

Then I finished it off with Dimension of the Machine, which unfortunately still doesn't bring back the enemy/weapon variety but does keep things fresh by introducing a hub world with 5 mini-episodes you can tackle in any order. Each episode is two fairly lengthy missions long and they take place in really cool, unique locales and have some of the most hectic firefights in the series. Really good expansion to end things off with.

So overall I loved this game and you can tell because I basically marathoned all 20-some hours of it in less than a week lmao

The idea is to indoctrinate hatred of LGBT people in the mean time. That is what "they'll be confused!" really means -- that the parents need more time to instill hatred.

Those kids are often also taught not to go to college (especially if they're women) and to fear cities/other counrties so unfortunately some of them never do escape the bubble and become "confused when they grow older".

Two factors I think. 1. Card-based stuff in video games in general was extremely pass for a while there, like maybe after 2006-ish but possibly even earlier. I feel like people have come around on them again within the last ~6 years, but: 2. Mini-games feel a lot less common in general these days (probably because people have realized that no one really liked most of them, so they were wastes of time to develop). These days if you have a really fun game idea you might as well just make a full game of it, not cram a half-baked version into a different game.

Kenri has beaten Doom Eternal

Pretty good game, though tentatively I think I liked Doom 2016 more. 2016 felt simpler and faster (and had my favorite gun of both games, the Gauss Cannon). Eternal definitely had more mechanics but I'm not sure that's something I prefer or not. It made finding secrets much, much more tolerable though, so it definitely had that over 2016. The plot of Eternal also kinda sucks unfortunately, though if you just want to see Doomguy kill stuff then it's fine. Ultimately I enjoyed both and I think I'm glad I played 2016 first, as I probably wouldn't have liked Eternal if I had jumped into it straight away.

It's a very very different kind of game but Vision Soft Reset is another time loop Metroidvania. Basically, everytime you save it creates a separate timeline and a quick travel point, and you have to jump back and forth through different timelines to figure out a way to save the planet. All major upgrades are considered knowledge (mechanically they're still unlocks though), so they stay with you, but health upgrades are physical items so you'll only have them in timelines where you collected them.

It doesn't have the emotional pull of Outer Wilds, though, or nearly as cool of a setting. It's much closer to Super Metroid in those areas. Fun game though.

The one I keep coming back to here is Paradise Killer but it's very, very... very different. You need a high tolerance for anime bullshit to even get your foot in the door, for one thing, whereas I feel like Outer Wilds' setting has more mass appeal. But it IS essentially a "wander around, follow rumors, and solve the mystery" game in the same way Outer Wilds is and it had a few really good eureka moments in terms of the story/mystery (less so for gameplay/puzzles).

Snakes I don't have a phobia of but I'd definitely give them more of a respectful distance than spiders. If I need to get a snake out of my house I'm getting a broom, for a spider I'd probably just use my hands.

So snakes I guess...?

Started Doom Eternal and did the first two levels. Uh, I think so far I like every single thing about it less than Doom 2016. I feel incredibly underpowered even compared to the very beginning of Doom 2016, though presumably once I'm better at the combat (I keep forgetting to even use the flamethrower to get armor drops) that feeling will go away. Definitely can sympathize with KCF's ammo woes.

The plot so far is like. Some Halo bullshit. I can't be bothered to care about it yet, and it doesn't help that it has not yet bothered to connect with Doom 2016's cliffhanger ending.

That was a fun and silly brisk little game. Can't believe I married everyone, or at least darn near close. I was missing one heart at the end, wonder if it was in the jealous chest? Tempted to try it again and open that first. Later.
It's not. That chest contains power boost 6 of 5 so it doesn't affect your ability to get 100%.

Some places you might check for what you're missing:
  • 2F of the crystal palace, the king is frozen in an ice cube and blends into the tileset.
  • the destroyed town in one of the later areas has a wilting flower you can revive in one of the houses
  • the whole outer space area has a couple easy to miss secrets with one battle behind them
Other than those it's probably just overlooking an NPC somewhere without it being particularly hidden.

Unrelated but I love how you can marry your mom, and she'll just be like "I think we need to have a serious talk about why you thought this was okay"

I don't see how. The key thing is that the time loop is powered by a supernova. So the Nomai did plan for the supernova and it fit perfectly in the timeline. It's just that they had to wait millions of years. For the player character it's a total coincidence they were born near the supernova time and saw the statue 22 minutes before, which adds to the overall theme of being totally unimportant but also the most important piece of the puzzle.
Don't read this KP (it's probably fine actually, I think you know it all already but just in case):

I just think "the whole universe is way older than we thought it was and we just missed that all of it is dying, coincidentally right now" is like. Nonsense. Thematically it's fine. As the solution to a big mystery you spent most of the game trying to figure out I thought it was extremely unsatisfying, especially considering that every other mystery in the game has an answer that I find very clever and fitting.

To be clear I'd have been fine with "this one specific star just happens to be dying right now". I don't think that twist scales up very well though.

I think I mostly agree with your thoughts. The way the mysteries tie together is really top notch. I wasn't a fan of the twist you mentioned previously though, to me it feels very random and unbelievable, especially when compared to how seamlessly everything else fits together. Not saying the Nomai should have been responsible but the actual reveal just feels unsatisfying.

I definitely agree that "restart and wait 10+ minutes" becomes a problem at certain points in the game. It really could've used a "start loop at X planet, Y minutes in" option, though I understand that they probably didn't want to break the immersion by allowing that.
