Let's just use Ethereum as our example. Suppose the Olympics wants to issue an "I attended The 20XY Olympics" token. They could just do this by having a ERC-20 smart contract with idk...25 Official_Olympic tokens and then each olympics they make a new smart contract for Olympic 20XY tokens, send an official olympic token to that (in order to validate that it is tied to the real Olympics smart contract), and then distribute the Olympic 20XY tokens to the appropriate people.

That's all I mean by "semi-fungible", because if you just want to establish "I was there", you don't need each one to be unique.
to be clear, you can do that with nfts. a finite or infinite set of them can be issued by a common contract, which in turn is managed by a certain authenticated address or set of addresses. while it's possible to do the same with erc-20, the divisibility feature seems like overkill and could encourage speculation activity in automated market makers. nfts are far less liquid, since most people understand nft speculation is a fool's errand, so there's ironically less temptation of this nature.

validation of the authenticity of the smart contract - erc20, nft, or otherwise - would be established by its contract address, which is identical in format to "normal" addresses, as well as its deploying/governing address(es). the authenticity of both the contract and governing addresses can then be established by checking against the organization's official presences online, such as websites, code repositories, and verified social media, but there's active research ongoing into richer identification solutions on the blockchain itself.

If you're meaning that this is just a remnant tied to your Olympic ticket, then I think you're just avoiding saying "ticketing" system.
not necessarily ticketing. if it's issued after the event, metadata might just be useful for retrospective analysis or categorization of issuances from a common contract. for instance, with the commemorative developer contribution nft i was granted, there were different classes of nfts corresponding to the number of projects developers contributed to, where the metadata informs what classes they are. as it relates to olympics, metadata might just indicate the events someone attended.

I'm more saying that the abstract "value" of a "I was there" NFT is diminished if someone can buy my "I was there" NFT to claim to be there and I think that "someone might want to transfer between their own accounts" was potentially going to distract away from that point so I was trying to avoid that.
there's been some chatter about "soulbound" tokens which are fixed to an address and non-transferable, but given the occasional need to transfer to a new address, the concept seems impractical at the moment. i think when accounts are properly abstracted, there may finally be reason for nontransferable soulbound tokens to exist. so long as tokens are transerable, it's unfortunately possible to try to financialize them (erc-20, nft, or otherwise), since blocking it across the board at the contract level is a big game of whack-a-mole.

I understand why you might want to represent this in some way with a token, but I'm not sure that there's any need for it be non-fungible (this might be semantic, because depending on how you want to group them they could be "semi-fungible") and I don't know why you would necessarily want them to be transferable (let's say, in a world where we've somehow made accounts secure enough that people wouldn't want to transfer between their own accounts).
there are basically two kinds of tokens - fungible and nonfungible. i'm not sure if semi-fungible is possible, though there's been some work into "divisible" nfts that work in a joint-stock manner, but that's outside my area of experience.

you can't really attach unique data to fungible tokens, so your only real options for writing data of this nature to (smart contract) blockchains are non-fungible tokens, contract data storage, transaction messages, and contract transaction event logs.

transaction messages and event logs are far less efficient to retrieve data from, depending on how a particular network manages its historical data - the data may need to be indexed by a third party with the necessary infrastructure for storing historical state data. meanwhile, contract data storage has to be updated one by one, which is inexpensive for a single contract but the transaction costs add up if you want to update data for multiple ones. the nft standard is one strategy for abstracting this complexity from o(n) to o(1), since the identity would be tied to the transferable nft rather than a fixed address, and they're always a part of the network's current data state. it's not unlike how a load-balanced website domain can represent different ip addresses.

one scenario where you might want to transfer nfts of this nature is if you lose access to your seed phrase but still have your hardware wallet, in which case you'd want to quickly move your assets to a new address that you have the seed phrase for. or, to avoid this predicament altogether, you might want to move all your tokens to an abstracted (contract-based/programmatic) account which offers different security or user experience guarantees depending on its implementation. in short, when there's a world where accounts are secure enough to not need to transfer between accounts, they'll likely need to transfer to those secure accounts - which i'd imagine will be of the abstracted variety - from the standard/default/base-layer accounts.

can you elaborate on what you think the remaining 1% is
the people using the standard as a dependency for other technologies, rather than marketing nfts as collectibles or speculative instruments.

from my direct experience as a non-nft-speculator, some use cases they've been used for include:
  • commemorating attendance of events, real-world and online, and/or development contributions. this can help inform the reputation and identity of a user address when aggregated.
  • issued by financial protocols as a means of tracking user funds in a transferable way. when crowdfunding liquidity to accrue a share of revenue generated, certain protocols issue a "marker" nft representing your contribution. this - and by extension the assets it represents - can either be transferred to another financial protocol that accrues additional revenue on top of the original revenue stream, or alternately, just serves as an elegant snapshot of historical user positions for future reference without convoluting the main contract code.
edit: i should also add that none of these cost more than the network fees needed to transact onchain - the issuer paying for the former, and the protocol user paying for the latter. there is no speculative value to nfts of this nature; just pure information infrastructure.

that remaining 1% also includes r&d efforts, but i'm not sufficiently informed to comment on it. drm, real-world authentication, privacy-preserving biometrics and identity, probably some real-world asset tracking for certain jurisdictions, stuff like that.
