As I mentioned earlier, it doesn't necessarily matter if it affects them or not. It's their response, which they've made pretty clear. They said they will be investing heavily in more security and new technologies.

Target already has one of the best forensics labs in the country that can facially track you at any Target in the country. Law enforcement uses Target's lab for homicides. And Target lets you steal enough to hit felony levels, so you get fucked super hard if you continue.

This is an industry wide problem, and tech/AI/security firms are already stepping up to fill in the gaps. Small grocery store chains are testing AI and facial tracking technology, which can be shared with other stores.

So, if the argument is that some people might need to steal, well, it just become much harder because people made it too hot.

It's like how you can't really protest the broken tipping system by not tipping. Target just killed almost every stacking discount they had over the past few months. Worked fine for like a decade. Just a small example of where the hits come.

Target had $10B in revenue in 2021. $400M is 1/25 of that.

They had $6.9B in net earnings in 2021.

That makes the $400M lost, less than 1/17 of their profits.

So a more accurate example would be, if you had to donate $100 to some work event every month, after getting a $20K bonus every year. Are you really going to be tripping over $1200 a year if you're getting $20K a year? Unlikely.

Target's net was 6.8 billion from January 2021 to October 2021

Target's net was 3.2 billion from January 2022 to October 2022.

A 53% drop. 400 million in theft from January 2022 to October 2022.

If you were making $100k net in 2021, you now make $47k in 2022, plus have to pay out $6k for theft, so $41k net. If you could spend $3k or more to prevent that, you'd probably do that, especially to protect future years. You might also act like a corporation and cut out a bunch of spending to come up with the $3k, so it feels like you got the full $6k, or rather, the top got everything.

For the amount of money they spent, probably. However, I had a lot of fun watching it and am looking forward to the next season. The showrunners even said that they just had to get a lot of things out of the way, and that season 2 and forward will be much closer to the lore.

Yeah, fuck this shit. I have been able to walk to Canada from NY with just my license for decades. Here, you only get upgraded for free if your renewal is up AFAIK. Renewals are 8 years, so everybody else will be forced in a few months.

Another thing is corporation can write off loss in taxes, so no they're not going bankrupt over anyone stealing stuff from their stores they also have various levels of asset protection insurance coverage as well. So it's kind of insane people have sympathy of these headline stories but have no care in the world when they walk past a homeless person...

Tax writes offs are not magic and come at the expense of lost tax revenue to everybody else, and insurance is not some endless pit in a vacuum. It's also not about going bankrupt nor is every business backed by a corporation.

The homeless thing is odd since this is not about sympathy. This is about trying not to normalize something that hurts everybody because of a few sheltered people who clearly have no idea how anything works.

As someone who has worked retail the majority of his career, I can tell you that most theft are people stealing because of something they want, not something they need.

You can pretend most of the theft is some noble "need to feed my family" BS, but it's mostly not.

It's not even really that. They have found that people with higher incomes steal more. Everybody assumes "must be poor and suffering" when it's more about easy opportunity and lack of enforcement. Too many people think every criminal is some misunderstood poor person suffering from society's failings.

I feel like some think that Target is just gonna roll over and not increase enforcement and not divert away from other things like wages and just make things worse. Idk, wanting everybody to get lower quality because you feel Target got too much money and want to make some poorly informed point is peak ivory tower.

I don't think it matters whether Target's concern is a big deal or not. They'll react to it in the name of profit and nobody can do much about it. In the end, it causes chain reactions that affect everybody, from costs being passed down to employees (layoffs) and customers to the surrounding areas as insurance rates go up and/or they leave.

Also most shit is franchised, so while Target and Walmart are not franchised and have deep pockets, people aren't really looking up what's what, so it will end up just taking from other regular people.

People nowadays are so fucking naive that they can't even think past that.

Nah, I meant like, the assumption is that Cerebrimbor already has a plan about making something, which seems already in play. So someone has already influenced him.

But you make a good point. Cerebrimbor could just have some general plan about saving the elves right now and Halbrand is gonna be the one to offer up some ideas and influence him.

They seem to be really pointing towards him being Sauron. That random fight scene where he took on 3 guys at once. That one final scene where they were saying something like "he might be walking among us" as the camera was focused on him. Showing up by himself on a life raft in the ocean with no explanation. Being good at blacksmithing. He's going to where Celebrimbor is.

Like at this point if it isn't him then I'll almost feel like they pulled a cheap shot on us.

But I think we're forgetting something important. The showrunners are pretty much JJ Abram's proteges. They worked with him on lots of other stuff like Star Trek and even had Abrams put in a good word for them at Amazon, which got them the job. Hence all the mystery boxes.

So I can definitely see them just taking us for a ride with that lol.
