I'm back!

I just want to say how excited I was for you guys to meet the Inidigo lanterns and learn their dark origin. That story coming shortly after the Zantanna one was just so perfect.

Then hearing about how the party changed the Corps direction by providing them with real compassion is fascinating. So good.

I've only just finished page one of this topic though so i will add more thoughts later.

Brennus also has to deliver a bounty that he has on someone named Panacea. Brennus agreed (because I mean, the alternative was getting murdered) but in a bit of follow up research Brennus has done, turns out Panacea is a hero and not someone Brennus wants to help kill.

With a name based on medicine I certainly would have expected them to be a good person.

See that's what I love about Susie. There are so many red flags with her, girl is deranged, but she can also be a loving happy little girl. I could still see her becoming a major super hero or super villain.

And Rozetta trying to nurture the good without just denying the bad exists is great. I wish the two of them all the best.

1. Susie "Su'zie" Tompkins

When I first read about Susie in the very first ranking topic I was hooked and found her extremely interesting. If I had done a ranking of some kind right after that topic she would probably have been my #1. Ever since Rosetta's ranking topic she has been all but locked in. While characters like Starsa, Patch, and Catman have made a good challenge, nobody was able to knock her off from the top spot.

Susie is a young girl with psychic powers who has lost her parents during A-day. She is also the niece of Lois Lane, which is just a cool little detail I felt I should mention. When the team found her she had taken over the city using the psychic boosting powers of Mento's helmet. As the party tried to reach her they found themselves being mentally tortured as Susie turned their fears and weaknesses against them. It was horrifying and awful. But when they finally got to her and got the helmet off what they found was not an evil villain but a scared traumatized little girl. Rosetta in particular felt for her and decided to adopt her, bringing Susie back to Z'onn Z'orr with her and sharing a room.

I love the relationship between Rosetta and Susie, or Ro'zetta and Su'zie as she now calls herself, using the Saturnian naming style. It is such a loving relationship, despite how short a time they have known each other, and despite Susie's issues. There are just so many great and sweet little moments with these two. Susie loves cats so Rosetta tries to get the cats to come visit her, but the cats all hate Rosetta because she is an evil shape shifter (according to the cats) so instead Rosetta turns herself into a cat so Susie can play with her cat mom and surprise her when she gets back to the room. In the other direction Susie keeps Oreos (sorry, Chocos) in her bloody Martian Manhunter doll because they are her Mom's favorite. She has also chosen to follow her mother's religion, which involves worshiping a Saturnian god of death. Cute? It is just a sweet loving relationship and clearly such a positive for both Susie and Rosetta. My favorite relationship that I have read about.

I also need to mention the Vegas story. Susie went along on the Vegas mission where everyone got separated. Susie, all alone, successfully went undercover with one of the Vegas gangs, found her way to a phone, and called her mom. What skill! Her mom meanwhile had woken up with a new little girl called Uptup who she was traveling with. This made Susie very jealous and she demanded multiple people "kill Uptup" for her. All the calls to her mom also included Susie begging her mom to find her and "Pick me up!". All of this was used by scarlet in a real knife twist brutal moment when Rosetta finally reunited with her daughter and picked her up, only for Susie to respond with "Put me down". So harsh and yet it makes total sense for the traumatized girl who can't bear to lose another parent.

The success on the Vegas mission has allowed Susie to be part of a potential undercover team. To help with this, she is also learning to use guns and knives, first from Catman and then from Jesse Custer. With her mom's permission of course.

Now that might seem pretty reckless, but Susie is not a normal child. She may look cute and innocent, as long as you ignore the bloody doll she carries around, but this girl has suffered some major trauma. She has some serious mental health issues including violent tendencies and possibly even a bit of psychopathy. Susie could be very dangerous, with or without training. Rosetta has chosen to help direct these tendencies in a positive direction and teach her responsibility. Its a good idea imo. Susie is never going to be a normal girl, so why not embrace what makes her different and help her to develop skills that could make her a great force for good. But I don't think a lot of people would be surprised if she turns into a supervillain, what with her history of mental torture, violence, skill at deception, and worship of a death god. I really don't know what the future has in store for Susie, she could go a lot of different directions, but I am really hoping I get to find out. Heck, I wouldn't be shocked if she becomes president in some time skip epilogue.

So far Rosetta is definitely steering her in the right direction and giving her what I think are good outlets for her issues. Their relationship is a real highlight and an absolute joy to read and learn about. Susie overall is simply the most interesting, intriguing, and captivating character I have had the joy to discover in these topics.

Starsa is actually distracted, however, because we got another match who may or may not show on Scar's list here. a 1000% match. The Greek god Eros.

Now, Eros doesn't consent, so it's a no-go, but... Starsa has been showing her darker side, as inherited from her Queen lately. She wants us to tie Eros down so she can get onto his finger.

Oh man Eros would be an incredibly powerful Lantern.

Also I thought she might be Carol's but I talked myself out of it. Oh well. And yeah that's some real drama Starsa is going to be in the middle of.

2. Starsa

As I have mentioned before I tend to be more of a Marvel person than DC, but the Lanterns are an exception. I love the Lanterns as much as any group in comics. I especially loved when we saw new colored rings being created or discovered. it was a such a cool idea and each group fit together while still being super unique. Each group was great and added something to the story (Blue is my personal favorite corp and the ring I would most want just as an fyi). I love Lantern stuff, so when I first learned of Starsa I was immediately interested.

All rings have an AI in them, the rings are essentially "alive" but they aren't unique entities, they don't have a mind of their own. Starsa is an exception, like Brother Eye for the OMACs. She should not exist, and yet their is no denying that she has her own mind and personality. She is self aware and has opinions and desires. Its such a cool idea. I loved the suggestion some PC had of Starsa getting her own ring and becoming a Lantern herself, of course Starsa shot that down hard and I can't say I blame her. Having one of your siblings serve you would be weird, and Starsa would rather fulfill her original purpose as a power ring rather than become a Lantern herself.

As a Star Sapphire Ring Starsa can grant the incredible powers based on the amount of love the person has within them. For this reason it is a ring's job to seek out a being capable of great Love and offer to them the power. This means that Starsa can literally tell how much love people have inside them and who they love. Starsa basically tests everyone around her and apparently has no issue sharing the results of these scans with the PCs. This even included outing the fact that Xander has a secret crush, though I believe she didn't out who it was at least (Its Trish). So far she has yet to find an appropriate candidate in ZZ or on their missions, Starsa isn't willing to settle after all. I would love to hear more about what the scan results were for the different PCs or major characters. The Checkmate team helps Starsa out with her search by taking her on missions, I believe usually accompanying Lush, so she can scan any potential allies they meet while out and about. She also sometimes uses her abilities to help out on the mission though I believe you have to ask.

This slow search was all fine until Starsa started running low on power. All Lantern rings need to recharge from time to time. This is done by putting the ring in a power battery and saying the right oath. The problem being that Starsa doesn't have her power battery. I don't remember what happened to it but the team could not find it or access it. To make matters worse the Green Lantern Corp had locked down the Planet Earth to make sure the ALE didn't spread, and there were no Star Sapphires on Earth who they could borrow a battery from. Stars found herself slowly running out of power, and nobody, not even Starsa, knew what would happen if she fully ran out. Normally that would just mean the ring would go inert and the wielder would lose their power until they could recharge, but as mentioned Starsa is unique. If she fully went down and then was recharged would she keep her sentience? Her personality and memories? Would she go back to being a normal power ring? Nobody knew, which meant that the safest bet was to assume the worst. Starsa was dying. Luckily, before time ran out the team was able to get off planet and get to Oa, home of the Green Lantern Corp. The relationship between the green and violet groups is complicated. Their leaders are the male and female members of the same race which have split apart over disagreements on how emotion should be viewed (among other things). The Lanterns themselves often fight, but it is also not uncommon for Star Sapphires to love Green Lanterns, see Carol Ferris/Hal Jordan. Starsa, if I remember correctly, was a big fan of Carol Ferris and was hoping of meet her, so I believe Starsa was also excited to meet the Green Lanterns. The Guardians, leaders of the Green Lantern Corp, do not generally like the Star Sapphires. So getting permission and assistance in reaching the Star Sapphire world was not easy and Starsa had to pretend to be a green power ring while they were on Oa. Eventually the group managed to succeed and set off for Zamaron to save their little friend.

The good news was that Starsa was able to recharge at a power battery. The bad news is that the party learned more about the Star Sapphire Corp, mainly that they aren't big on mental freedom. It turns out wearing a violet power ring and becoming a Star Sapphire comes with a certain level of mental alteration, possibly even straight up mind control. This made the party nervous, both in general and also for what this would mean for Starsa, as a power ring with a mind of its own. It also made them a little less thrilled with Starsa mission to find a new wielder and make them a Star Sapphire. I'm not sure exactly how this got resolved but Starsa is still herself and still with the party, as far as I know, so I guess something was worked out. Now Starsa can get recharged when needed, and is continuing her search for a wielder. One potential option being considered is Wonder Woman. The hope being that the Star Sapphire ring/bond will cure her from being a Fury which would be a huge win! Of course if that doesn't work then you have just bonded Star Sapphire to a monster and given a massive power boost to the strongest Fury.

I am very curios who Starsa will end up choosing and how that goes. Whoever gets Starsa as their power ring will truly be getting a partner, and I hope they realize how lucky they are.

And he even featured in the classic plot point of "Are Hal Jordan and Hal Jordan actually different people?", wherein Air Wave and Green Lantern consistently kept showing up consecutively and never simultaneously, always searching for the then-absent Hal. Abbott and Costello ain't got nothing on the Jordans.

3. Patch

Its Patch! Or Parch! Either way its everyones favorite rodent. BFF to Data 7, they were both experimented on by Man Bat and they, along with their cat friend, managed to escape during No Man's Land. They were a group of friends lasting throughout Campaign 1. While originally only Artemis could communicate with Patch among the PCs, this all changed when Trish made the mouse a special speaker that would let him communicate in English for all to understand. And boy does Patch love to talk. He doens't have much of a filter and just says what he is thinking, which can be a lot of fun. Data 7 made finding him a top priority in C2 and brought him back to Z'onn Z'orr. Patch has struggled with Data 7's new name, often still referring to him as Artemis. There is also a bit of struggle with the fact that their cat friend did not survive everything that happened between campaigns. Still, Patch generally seems to have a positive attitude and is a lot of fun to interact with and have around.

Patch and Data 7 founded a new animal team in ZZ called the Big Troubles, with Data 7 making sure that Patch was the one in charge. I believe this was done at least in part to make sure Patch was given some respect at the base and a place to feel like he was important. This has really only been a problem when it came to membership decisions. Data 7 intended for this to be an all animal team, Patch wants Vicki Vale to be a member. And when it came time for their auditions for a new member Data 7 rigged it to make sure Courdoroy the Condor was selected for the spot. Big Troubles are a fun group and Patch is an excellent leader for it with Data 7 always there to be his dependable right hand man.

I don't think most people expected much from the Big Trouble team beside some fun base shenanigans. Which leads me to one of my favorite stories in the campaign. Big Troubles went out into Antarctica on their first mission and came back with an active warheard! That's right, the animal team went out on their first mission and brought back a working freaking missile. I can't imagine Waller was expecting much when they left but she definitely was impressed when they came back. If the point of Patch leading the team was to earn him respect, mission accomplished! The success earned the team a base in ZZ and their leader a spot at the table, specifically the briefing table. From what I've read Patch is a delight in the briefings. As is his way the little guy just says whatever thoughts or opinions he has, almost always unasked for and usually not super helpful, but also usually funny. Briefings seem like they would usually be a more serious exposition filled scene, so having Patch there to add some comedy seems great. I can't wait to hear what this team gets up to next.

4. Catman / Thomas Blake

No character surprised me more than Catman. I never cared about him, he was just a weird hybrid Catwoman/Batman with the traditional yellow evil counterpart costume. Never saw anything there that interested or appealed to me. First time he showed up in a ranking I was just surprised to see him make an appearance, but man did his storylines draw me in. His relationship with Cheshire, his friendship with Deadshot, the betrayals of both. Cheetah stealing from him. Everyone who was part of his storylines were bumped up my rankings as a result of how much I found myself caring about these plots.

Catman debuted in Campaign 1 where he was one of if not the party's first choice to run No Man's Land. He was viewed as being a great potential leader with the ability to unite the fractured city and basically step into Batman's shoes. There was just one problem, he didn't want the job. Catman didn't want power or authority. No Thomas Blake just wanted to live in peace with his Pride of lions. So the Watchtower crew turned to Cluemaster instead and the rest is history.

For a little while Blake got his wish, even after A-Day he and his lions were fine on there own. He refused offers to join up with the Society or anyone else, but then "Deathstroke" snuck in and killed his Pride. Catman was enraged, and that is when his old friend Deadshot came into the picture. Deadshot promised him revenge if he joined up with the Secret Six, an offer Thomas Blake quikcly accepted. There he met and started a romance (or at least hooking up with) Cheshire. Catman had lost one family but might just be able to find a new one in this new team. Things were going in a good direction. And then the betrayals happened. First Cheshire betrayed the Secret Six, took over their base, and left with the message to Blake that she was pregnant with their child before disappearing into the Society. Later on a mission to La Mumba to meet up with the spirit of his best friend Pedro, Catman learned a horrible truth. That it was not Deathstroke but Deadshot who had killed his lion family, and he had done so as a trick to make Blake join up with the team. Just like that Catman lost his next closest friend. But the blows weren't done coming, as Pedro's final gift to Catman was stolen by Barbara Ann in order for her to become the Lioness. Just like that Catman basically lost everything all over again. So now he had two choices to direct his rage towards, his former friend who killed his Pride or his former lover who has his future child. Catman chose the later and left ZZ to track down Cheshire. I think that is the last anyone has heard from him. This is truly a tragic and dramatic tale that I could not help but get sucked into.

While I didn't actually make a tier above A when making my list it became clear that my Top 4 were my true S tier. The characters who, despite me having no knowledge or interest in them beforehand, I truly loved reading about. I became deeply invested in these four characters, in a way that is kind of crazy given that my only connection to them is reading character bios/plot summaries in ranking topics. Credit to Scarlet for his campaign and to the previous rankers for their excellent write-ups.

There is one other relationship I love for chiseled, handsome, Catman and want to talk about. Thomas Blake became a mentor/trainer/and maybe father figure for the young Susie Thompkins. Susie is basically a young, dangerous, possible psychopath. Thomas started training Susie with weapons, while also teaching her to respect them and take responsibility for her lethal ability. Many would, for good reason, say that teaching Susie to use guns and knives was not a smart or responsible move. Thomas and Rozetta felt it was the right one though, and hearing about the training and relationship between the two was really interesting to read about.

5. Blue Beetle / Jaime Reyes

Jaime Reyes is a brand new super hero. The party met him in El Paso shortly aftered be bonded with the alien scarab that grants him his abilities. He is a young man who believes in good and evil and who wants to be good and fight evil. Unfortunately much of the world is not so black and white, and he has struggled with this. Jaime started off in the Caravan storyline with the big face off between the villainous La Dama and the crazed and murderous La Llarona, not a very black and white choice. Still I expect Jaime would have preferred siding with La Llarona but that was not the way it went, and then to make matters worse the caravan traveled south and joined up with Bane. Supervillain, broke Batman's back, Bane. Then he goes to Z'onn Z'orr and finds a bunch more villains, many of them on the path of redemption but some of them...not so much. Like I think ZZ might have more former villains than heroes. And even a lot of the heroes have become pretty comfortable with killing and being less than heroic.

So Blue Beetle is continuously challenged in his views and he has begun to soften on it. Though you still get some slip ups like saying Harley Quinn Crazy around Harley Quinn. And he is not likely to approve of anyone using lethal force except in the most extreme cases. But with so many people with questionable morals around it can be good to have another pure hearted hero to act as a moral compass.

Jaime has also had his fair share of struggles in the relationship department. First there is his dad, who does not like aliens. I think he is a former soldier who fought aliens before? Either way he is not ok with Jaime's new power source/voice in his head and has basically disowned Jaime as a result. Jaime loves his family and wants to protect them, so this is really tough for him. Then he got caught up in the love triangle with Tracy and Pepper that ended with the manipulated kiss with Misty.

Its no wonder that Jaime needed to get away from ZZ and went back to doing hero work with protecting the caravan. It seemed to be good for him and he was able to do good work and help the caravan successfully make it to Antarctica. Now he is living in the city outside the ZZ base, playing some annoyball, and slowly reconnecting with the people he left behind. I was honestly very happy to hear that this reconnecting included him and Misty deciding to give things a real go. I hope it goes well for them because they both could use a happy relationship in their lives.

Jaime Reyes was a character I already loved before these topics. Young Justice sold me on him easily. Still I think Blue Beetle has more than earned his spot near the top of this list. He is a great character that provides a good perspective as a new pure hero. His storylines have been interesting and his relationships compelling. Just a great character that is clearly shining in his place in the campaign.

I mean I would guess a law that says that states have to recognize marriages performed in other states would probably be upheld....but probably not the portion that tells states what they can and can't do regarding marriages within their own territory.

It won't have any trouble getting through the Iowa Supreme Court either. There is only 1 Dem appointed Judge there and half the current justices were appointed as a direct response to the IA Supreme Court ruling that gay marriage was legal.

6. Amanda Waller

The Wall. Former leader of the Suicide Squad, current leader of Checkmate, and undisputed boss lady of Z'onn Z'orr.

Amanda Waller is a no nonsense lady and the perfect person to run the crazy alliance that exists at ZZ. Lots of big personalities and some old rivalries, but Waller makes sure everything runs and the job gets done. Waller is a solid character on her own but it is her relationships with everyone that makes her truly start out. Every character has a unique relationship with Waller and all of them are great to read about. The fact that a serious lady like Amanda Waller is also okay with having a talking mouse and dog at the briefing table. Or interacting with young heroes like Brennus, Spirit, and Pepper. She knows when to challenge people and when to give people some leniency/room to be flexible.

She really is the perfect person to run things and be the point person for Campaign 2.

Sorry for the short writeup, I have caught up with my prepared writeups and life has been crazy lately so I didn't have a great chance to write. I'm basically writing these on my 30 minute lunch break atm. Might have to take a day off later this week.

The other candidate is a citizen of the nation of Pokolistan (which is run by a general named Zod) named Sabine. She's sent kill teams after Brennus twice now, and also tried to kidnap one of his power's sources. Fortunately, Minerva managed to make a deal and circumvent any bloodshed. As for whether they share gods - no, but that hasn't stopped Sabine from trying to off the gods in Freddy's pantheon in order ensure her victory.

I'm going to assume Billy didn't get to pick her as a candidate.

7. Freddy Freeman

Freddy is the best friend of Billy Batson aka Captain Marvel aka Shazam. Captain Marvel gets his powers from the wizard Shazam, unfortunately Shazam was killed and Billy had to take his place as the new Sorcerer Supreme (I know that is not actually the title) and protect the Rock of Eternity. That means there needs to be a new Captain Marvel, and who better to take his place than his bff? Unfortunately, Freddy is required to go through a long quest to get this power, namely going around and finding the right gods and convincing them to share their powers with him. To make matters worse, while Billy just gets his power from 6 gods spelling out SHAZAM, Freddy has to get his powers from 13 gods spelling CAPTAIN MARVEL. Seems pretty unfair imo though it does mean that Freddy doesn't have to find and make nice with Zeus at least. I suppose the larger number of gods could mean that Freddy will be more powerful than Billy was, but his gods also aren't on the level of Olympians, at least not so far. If he ends up anywhere near the strength of his predecessor then Freddy will become one of the strongest allies Checkmate can make. Oh there is one other issue, Freddy isn't the only candidate for the champion job. He is in a race with a woman whose name I don't remember, the first one to collect all the letters gets the powers. The loser presumably loses whatever abilities they have collected.

Freddy takes this quest very seriously, and can usually be found in the ZZ library trying to figure out the riddles that will lead him to the other letters. He really wants to prove himself worthy of the powers and responsibility that Billy has potentially given him. He wants to live up to his best friends example. Honestly, its a lot of pressure for the young man but he does handle it well. Much of the ZZ crew aren't super focused on specific missions like he is, which did cause a bit of an issue when Pepper tried to make a young heroes team. Freddy was brought into it, but the group didn't really accomplish much and frustrated Freddy with their lack of focus.

Freddy is also a potential love interest for Brennus but personally I'm still team Jiro.

Hopefully the PCs can help him find some more letters soon because he has a long way to go. Do you guys know how far the other candidate is? Do they go for the same gods or alternates for each letter? I would love to hear that he becomes the new Captain Marvel and a huge asset to the anti-Darkseid forces.
