Like I know there *exist* people who are really pretentious who insist everyone calls them Dr. but most settings that I've worked in that hasn't really been the case. But there are people out there who don't have an advanced degree who think that people use a title because they think they're better than you, blah blah blah, and it's usually the type of people who think of themselves as being particularly smart who have this problem. There are dumb(er) people with doctorates and smart(er) people without them, but I guess it's threatening to their ego for some reason that there are people who (by their own interpretation) are deemed "smarter" than them. Also for the "I only call my doctor Dr. ____ thank you very much"...why is it that you call your doctor that? You don't call your barber Barber _____ or your banker Banker ______. As someone with a doctorate, who works at a startup with 19 other PhDs, and who has worked with many PhDs in my postdocs and grad school, I also have never once heard any of my friends or colleagues insist on being called doctor in a serious manner. Yeah, for me it's basically First Name > Full Name > Dr. Last Name > Mr. Last Name. because I am not in a situation where I have to worry about being disrespected (as CovXY said, minorities and women often will make sure people use their title because if they don't they tend to be more disrespected). But if someone is insisting on being formal I'd rather they get it right than not. Edit: To be clear, this is still mostly in a work setting. | Anteaterking 01/27/23 7:09:35 PM #142 | Cyric, let me know if I'm misrepresenting your position, but I think my problem with your stance is that you seem to both be saying that there's reason to believe that dividing a prison by gender is something worth doing as a matter of safety but also that there's trouble in trying to judicially decided whether someone's gender claim is sincere or not. I think those two things together make the answer to "Is it worth it to make that determination?" "Yes, if not doing so is a safety concern". Where those lines are drawn might be poorly decided upon by court systems but I don't think that's the same as saying the idea of drawing lines is bad. Generally people's claimed religious beliefs are considered to be sincere, but we saw with COVID that employers that were governed by EEO laws were given leeway to reject "religious exemptions to getting the COVID vaccine" if they had reason to believe that those people were lying. Most of those fell into pretty established categories like citing political beliefs as religious, the person previously openly suggesting that they were a different religion/atheist, etc. but I think they struck a firm balance between keeping religious freedom while still keeping the power of the vaccine mandate. Yeah I do think that the lines are somewhat arbitrary though often times feel "right" to people based on how much you enjoy the particular thing, how far up the chain they are, what the actual offense was, etc. Like I don't feel bad about watching movies that contain Kevin Spacey but if he had a new movie coming out I would feel differently about it (though if he's just part of an ensemble cast it also feels different than if he was the star). And I don't necessarily think twice about watching a movie that Harvey Weinstein produced because when I'm watching it it doesn't feel like his creative product or anything. I think regardless of whether you feel that ultimately it's fine to enjoy Hogwart's Legacy, it's disingenuous for people to act like it's *just* about the financial support to Rowling. It's a world based on her massively popular IP. If I shop at Walmart, I'm supporting a company that mistreats its workers and has done all sorts of other things, but for a lot of people it's not an endorsement of Walmart...its just one of multiple bad options. I'm not gushing over the lightbulbs I purchased or the off brand Tylenol. In this case, even if Rowling was making nothing, it feels like you're supporting her or at least adjacently supporting her by supporting the world she created. Maybe that's not enough to convince you to not play it, which I'm not going to fault people for. Honestly I will never know which CE users play the game or not except people keep champing at the bit to say "I WILL STILL PLAY IT AND IT WILL NOT MAKE ME TRANSPHOBIC BECAUSE IT LOOKS FUN". (And on a truly believed, but sort of bad faith argument...I mostly just think a lot of it is childish. I wasn't getting the bivalent booster because a) my workplace hadn't been giving them out yet which had made my first ones far easier and b) It kind of seemed like it was going the flu vaccine route where they're just guessing what strains are bad and targeting those. My friends who got the bivalent booster had harsher adverse reactions to it than previous ones and then a couple of them still got COVID anyway (just not one of the two strains protected against). Essentially, but the numbers won't match up exactly because of the rake. e.g. the Buccs/Cowboys game tonight the Cowboys are favored on the moneyline (-145) so if you bet $145 on them you'd win $100. You can say that the money would be better spent and I generally agree, but if it's really a choice between "statue honoring MLK" and "statue honoring <other person>" I think it's a different argument. If you're talking about your expected value, every bet is a "poor return on investment" because the payout is calculated based on the odds minus the sportsbook's cut. Like the closer it gets to guaranteed, the less money you make (down to 0 if it's a sure thing).
