One of my favorites is The Exterminating Angel. It's about a group of rich people who suddenly find themselves completely unable to leave a room in a house, against all logic and for no discernible reason. There are no physical barriers - they just can't bring themselves to leave - and they find themselves taking desperate measures to cope with their entrapment and just survive, descending into animal behavior and reduced to puncturing a pipe for water and going to the bathroom in a closet, all while concerned onlookers are also unable to enter the house (although a child almost makes it, and some animals are able to wander in and out). It later turns out that they can't leave because of a breach in basic social protocol. They literally almost die because their dumb asses have internalized their "good manners" so well, that when someone made a minor misstep, they couldn't leave, despite not even noticing it. They later - after several days marooned in a room, unbathed and practically out of their minds - retrace their steps, realize the blunder, and make up for it, and find themselves able to escape. Naturally, everybody goes to church and it's strongly suggested that it's about to start all over again.

The game assumes, at this point, that you have enough grasp of the mechanics to beat foes who are stronger but stupider than you. Rest assured that it will keep thinking of ways to make you cry, though.

I would also say that lately, it has become more advantageous to accuse media of being political when it isn't explicit or even implicit - it's obvious that their outrage at, say, that recent He Man cartoon was complete hogwash and their feelings aren't real. I think this is a separate matter entirely from their media literacy, though. It's a direct and calculated fascist attack on the media landscape as a whole.

I think it's worse than them simply being stupid or ignorant. They pick up on social and political subtext well enough, but actively rationalize it away in order to downplay it, or even appropriate it for themselves. Of course, it may be reflexive, and not something they do consciously.

Another one is Sophie's Place, an experimental film by Larry Jordan from 1986. It's a feature length piece, similar to Terry Gilliam's animations during Monty Python but far stranger. The director spent most of his career making such films, and that is his masterpiece.

He also did a film of Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which utilizes a similar surrealist cutout animation style with Orson Welles (yes, that Orson Welles) reading Samuel Talor Coleridge's poem.

Three's a Crowd, a silent comedy starring Harry Langdon. I think it's a masterpiece, though. It's bleak as fuck but also very funny. It has 141 votes on IMDB.
