Nah, it's still more like saying, "Man, I miss it when teams could play defense. All these rules that favor the offense have made the game less fun." It's not a different sport. It's a different version of the same sport. You don't have to like it, but like others have said, Final Fantasy is a series about evolution.

Danganronpa V3 beated!

Well, that was...I'm not totally sure what that was, which I feel like was kinda the point. I haven't felt this judged by a video game since the final episode of Umineko! I think it was a clever way to end the story, even if it's a bit self-indulgent. The presentation of the entire thing is top notch. I did wonder if there was some sort of bad ending for participating in the sections where you're supposed to do nothing, or if you just get penalized or get a standard game over.

I've got a couple of new options on the main menu now. I'm assuming one of them will let me finish bond levels with the rest of the characters, so I'll reserve character rankings for after I'm done with that one. I dunno what the other thing does or if it's worth doing. I guess we'll see!

Overall, I'd go 2 > V3 > 1, and that feels pretty clear cut to me.

Miyamoto laughs at the idea of including anything F-Zero

Playing some more DRV3, Tsumugi reveals herself to be some sort of Junko impostor? I was kinda hoping we'd get some use out of her being the Ultimate Cosplayer instead of just a Junko clone, but alas. She says she's the 53rd Junko, meaning that this is DR53 after all...! I wonder if she hides inside every game as the mastermind instead of acting behind the scenes, and she's always one of the two survivors (since she can manipulate results). It makes me wonder if every game ends like this (although it wouldn't be good for ratings...!), where they find and confront the mastermind, or if there are games she gets through without being discovered. Maybe we'll get to that.

Looks like I was right about them actually not being Ultimates. The motive videos seemed to be real though, or at least Kokichi's seemed to be. It's hard to say just yet. Also, I recall thinking that Tsumugi was the only one who wasn't doing anything before the attempted rescue of Kaito, but now her absence seems awfully conspicuous...!

Oh good now we're finally making good use of cosplay and bringing back DR2 characters (although I thought she couldn't pretend to be "real" people, but I guess she could've been lying about that)

Nominate Chandler and Joey's bromance

Still a top tier bromance for me. I enjoyed the running gag early on of the show treating roommate moments like a marriage, such as when they're going to buy a table together and they ask things like, "Are we ready for this yet?" It's kinda wild to think they were only roommates for half the show, but it's how I always think of them. I like how Joey was the biggest Chandler/Monica supporter, and even when they get ready to move away, they make sure to have a room where Joey can stay with them and they can grow old together.

Can you really call yourself a fan of the show if you haven't tried to say this line at least once? Not necessarily as a pick-up line, but just as an impression to try to nail the cadence. It might be the most famous line from the show (other than maybe "We were on a break"). My favorite use of the line is when Phoebe questions whether the line actually works, prompting Joey to use it on her, and even knowing it's coming, she still melts.

"Look at me. I'm Chandler. Could I be wearing any more clothes?" The One Where No One is Ready is probably a top ten episode of the show for me, and this moment is a big reason why. It's such a fantastic and unexpected culmination of the fight Joey and Chandler have been having the entire episode. It's the type of payback only Joey could come up with.

This has been a Joey-heavy update! But this might be the most clever Joey has ever been. Watching him slowly piece it together over the course of the episode, and the realization on Chandler and Monica's faces when they notice he's figured it out is so great. Joey keeping their relationship a secret even when it did damage to his own reputation at times was the greatest test of his loyalty, and he passed with flying colors.

Wow, that sounds awesome. Definitely something to take my son to when he gets older, from the sound of it.

I finished up the investigation in DRV3 Case 6. Of course Kaede has a twin, just like Junko, so there's the mastermind. I guess the question is how much the two of them were working together, if at all. We find out a lot about the inner workings of the academy, particularly the Flashback Lights with its multiple settings. That seems to indicate that none of the backstory is real and is being fabricated for TV drama, which would explain why Monokuma says the killing game is never-ending. After this game ends, they do another one. Maybe this really is the 53rd killing game. They aren't the last 16 survivors of humanity. Heck, they may not even be Ultimates. They may have just been given "Ultimate" memories since they were "ordinary" at the beginning of the game, although that part seems less likely since they do seem to excel at their ultimate talents.

Although Rantaro indicated there was an important reason for the game lasting until there are only two left, but that means there was one other survivor of the previous killing game. Could it be someone else involved with this game? The mastermind clearly viewed Rantaro as a real threat to end the killing game, but for what reason?

also I'm glad the game finally acknowledged something from DR2...!

Book 13 had a couple of scenes that tugged at my heartstrings, when Hopper died, and when Noal stayed behind to let the others escape the tower. I also really loved Aviendha seeing the visions of the future in Rhuidean.

Of the entire Joey/Rachel romance arc, this is probably the one moment from it I'd say was good. Friends always knew how to do cliffhanger season finales. This isn't the best one, but it was definitely a heck of a way to cap off the season. I mean, as always, you knew nothing would come of Joey/Rachel because Ross/Rachel was inevitable, but it was a good twist.

Now this is the best Friends season finale cliffhanger. For a show that almost never delves into "shock value," it was a truly stunning moment. You never really knew where the Ross/Emily relationship was going to go or how it would inevitably end (see above), but I don't think I'd have ever predicted this. I actually liked Emily as a character, so it's kind of a shame her run on the show didn't last long beyond this (partly because her actress got pregnant in real life). Probably the craziest part of it all is that the writers stumbled upon it by total chance because David Schwimmer accidentally said "Rachel" during a take.

The Rachel hairstyle.

I honestly didn't realize this hairstyle became a thing until years after the show. Rachel's hair changed a lot over the course of the show (way more than anyone else's), but the original hairstyle is probably still the one I associate with her the most. There's a lot of talk about "iconic" stuff on the board at the moment, and I'd say this is an iconic hairstyle (now someone needs to make a "most recent iconic video game hairstyle" topic so people can argue Cloud's hair isn't iconic).

Paleontology

"Jurassic Park could happen!" I'm guessing someone on the show was into dinosaurs because paleontology comes up a lot, possibly more than anyone else's profession (maybe Joey gives him a run). They try to balance it out by having all the other characters get bored by it every time Ross brings it up, so it never really takes over an episode.

I started DRV3 Case 6. During Kaito's failed "execution," Keebo's antenna was broken off the top of his head, so he can't hear his "inner voice" anymore. As such, he's decided to embrace being the Ultimate Robot and transforms into a machine capable of destroying the academy. Shuichi and the gang try to reason with him and Keebo agrees to let us search for some other way to end the killing game, but he's only giving us until dawn.

First, we find Kokichi's Ultimate Lab, and then we search his room, which is full of evidence from the previous cases. Turns out he's not a Remnant of Despair, but the leader of an organization called D.I.C.E., which Monokuma says just performed petty crimes and pranks. No clue what D.I.C.E. stands for, but I'm sure we'll find out.

Then we're finally able to investigate Rantaro's lab, and we learn he was given the title of Ultimate Survivor for winning the previous killing game. We get to see the whole video that was partially teased earlier. Rantaro begins to say there's an important reason why the killing game lasts until there are just two people left, but he's not allowed to say. He does mention two Survivor Perks, one of which was the ability to leave this message, and the other was something Rantaro had at the beginning of the game, prompting Himiko to search his room.

Rantaro says that if anyone found out who he was, he'd be a target, which is why he was the first victim. Shuichi deduces that the mastermind would've known, and so they set him up to be killed first to get him out of the way. Rantaro makes it sound like he wanted to participate in the second game so he'd be able to end it, but obviously, that didn't happen. The mastermind may have been aware of it and killed him off quickly as a result. So is the mastermind a 17th person hiding here instead of one of the 16? It's starting to look that way. Just please don't let it be some form of Junko.

We're also getting hit with periodical flashbacks of Shuichi's life leading up to the Gofer Project, including a conversation with the founder of the new Hope's Peak Academy, who is clearly Makoto Naegi. We'll see where it goes from here.

Ross's inability to tan correctly

David Schwimmer became really good at physical comedy over the course of the show, and this is a fantastic example of it. Ross repeatedly screwing up the spray tan process is done so well, as he keeps finding new ways to keep getting sprayed down the front and never the back, whether it's because he counted wrong ("Mississippi-less-ly?!") or because he went to another spray tan salon that did it differently than the first one. Ross and Chandler have a great exchange afterwards, too. "I went to that place your wife suggested." "Was that place...the sun?"

I'll be honest: I had to look this one up because I didn't recognize it just from this. I do remember the days of making funny initials when you got a high score in the arcade. I have naturally cool initials though (JAM), so I tended to use them most of the time. Also, to bring it back to Seinfeld, it's too bad that Frogger machine didn't have a primitive rom chip in it or something...!

I tried getting into it but never really could (which I imagine was the case for most people, since it was a short-lived spinoff). I don't remember how many episodes I actually watched, but it couldn't have been more than a handful. I recall thinking at the time that I didn't think Joey could carry a show by himself. Does anyone actually have positive memories of this show? I never really hear it discussed, so maybe it's more fondly remembered than I realize.

The episode title naming scheme "The One Where..."

This was a brilliant idea back in the days before you had box sets and streaming when people didn't actually know episode titles. They tried to think of what the fans would wind up calling the episodes naturally, and the percentage of times they got it right was pretty high, I think. They didn't have much foresight with some of them, like "The One with Two Parts," "The One After the Super Bowl," or "The 100th Episode." A few of them didn't get the part everyone remembers it for though, most notably (in my opinion) "The One with the Embryos," which is more known for the Roommates Game than the embryos.

DRV3 Case 5 beated!

Okay, the ending salvaged it a little there. I thought we were near the end of the actual game, and it was shaping up to be a buzzkill if so. As it stands, I'm okay with it now that Kaito and Kokichi explained their motivations for it.

man I sure do hope that I wasted all that time on the wrap-up just for it to be wrong because this is a lame solution if Shuichi is right but it'd be a great twist if he's not

But now it's time for some more DRV3 Case 5. Maki reveals her part in the case. She was the one who shot them with the poison arrows, although Kaito jumped in the way to keep her from killing Kokichi. She tried to give the antidote to Kaito, but Kokichi stole it. Theoretically, Kaito shouldn't have been able to survive unless there was some trick Kokichi played on Maki. Kaito insists he can still save the day, and Kokichi says he won't stop whatever he wants to do.

At this point, the real gambit of the case is revealed: Kokichi isn't actually the mastermind, and his goal wasn't to kill Kaito. Rather, it was to produce a murder so unsolvable that even Monokuma wouldn't know who the real culprit is. With that being the case, Monokuma joins our side to help us take down Kokichi (if that is indeed him). Nobody seems to be catching on that whoever is inside the Exisal gets really confused when the Remnants of Despair are mentioned, but he didn't use the last Memory Flashlight to get the rest of his memories back. Could that be it?

Also, Monokuma says that Kokichi was making deductions about what really happened to them, and while he says he got a lot of it right, he doesn't say he got everything right. Maybe we aren't actually on the ruined Earth but another planet after all. Still hard to tell at this point.

Then Shuichi comes up with the idea that the victim and the culprit switched places (featuring an unprecedented two Mind Mines in a row!), which would make Kaito the culprit and Kokichi the victim if true. However, Kokichi did have that remote that can hack any device, so theoretically, he could've pushed the button himself. It would make sense why his clothes were hidden since you obviously couldn't have him wearing his own clothes while getting crushed by the press. It would also explain why the Exisals don't work on their own anymore since the remote would be broken. But I could see Kokichi going along with a plan where he dies as long as it means he gets his unsolvable mystery in the end.

The thing that gets me is, if it's Kaito in the Exisal, why is he continuing to pretend to be Kokichi? Unless that was part of the agreement to get Kokichi to cooperate with him? Even then, it still doesn't make any sense. Kaito was willing to sacrifice his own life to prevent Kokichi from being killed, but maybe he has a different policy on suicide...? Regardless, I don't think he'd have done the deed himself when he's been so adamant that he doesn't want anyone killed the whole time.

Yeah, I'm only using characters from the games themselves for that part (except for the odd cases where only 3 characters are available initially, like FFX, in which case Squall gets the 4th slot) so I can have a lot of leveled characters to choose from later on.

I started on Basic difficulty, but it was a little too easy, so I switched to Expert, which is just right for now. I'm sure I'll start tackling Ultimate difficulties once I finish all the Game Stages.

Still working my way through the Game Stages. I've done VI, VII, VIIR, VIII, IX, X, XIII, and XV so far.

I love that Chandler knows Janice's full name, by the way. I do think he cares about her in his own way, which is why it was always so difficult for him to do something that would hurt her feelings. Nobody in Friends could chew the scenery quite like Maggie Wheeler, and you could tell she relished it in her appearances as the show went along. The moment you saw her on screen, you knew she was going to say the three words that make Chandler's balls suck up right into his body. I think my favorite exchange is in her last appearance and she's looking at buying the house next door to the one Chandler and Monica are buying. She says, "What a small world," and Chandler's top notch reply is, "And yet I never run into Beyonce."

Bamboozled

I loved game shows growing up. I rarely watch them anymore (other than the occasional Family Feud or just watching funny bad answer videos on YouTube), so I thought it was cool to have an episode where Joey is auditioning to be a game show host. The brief glimpses they give you into the game make it seem like total chaos, but clearly, there's a rhyme and reason for everything that happens because Joey can rattle off the objectives of the game like it's nothing on the final callback. I love that Chandler thought the game was so stupid at the beginning, and at the end, he just screams, "BEST. GAME. EVER." (Not to be confused with the GameFAQs game contests of the same name)

Actually, my favorite part of this bit isn't even on this video. After this, Chandler tells Rachel, "She's not just the boss in your office, if you know what I mean," and Joey laughs. Rachel glares at him and he replies, "Oh, I knew what he meant." I do enjoy how it throws Chandler for a loop every time Joey imitates the sound of the bed creaking though.

Mr Heckles

I recently learned Mr. Heckles was only in five episodes, and that kinda blew my mind because it felt like a lot more than that. I think he's definitely one of the more memorable minor characters in Friends. He's just the right amount of eccentric to make him weird but not so weird that he crosses over into creeper territory. I think The One Where Heckles Dies is one of the best episodes of the first couple seasons because they manage to take this guy who has only been annoying and weird up to this point and make him sympathetic. We'll try to keep it down.

And now I've reached the intermission of DRV3 Case 5. So now we've reached the possibility that Maki is the culprit, but did she kill Kaito, Kokichi, both, or neither? That's actually pretty important because of the rule of multiple murderers. If she only killed Kokichi but Kaito died first, then she wouldn't be the blackened. I'm still not convinced that Maki did it though because I couldn't see her killing Kaito, even on accident, due to her assassin skills. Also, the idea that she would sacrifice all of them just to take down Kokichi and doom the human race in the process doesn't sound very hopeful, so I'd sure like to think that isn't the ending this game is leading us toward here...! Maybe Kaito killed himself before the poison could to protect everyone? That would be a very Kaito solution.
