Here's another example, only this time there is a wire barrier down the middle of the road making it somewhat difficult to fully avoid.

Granted this road is a major highway and as such the council is not responsible for it. This though gives a good indication of the state of our roads.

This is about 100m up the road from the picture above. I guess they ran out of steel plates.

Here's the part of the road the council "fixed" by placing steel plates over the top. This road is designated a 100km/h zone too, though there are 40km/h signs either side of the "fix", which was done just over a year ago.

Here is an example of the conditions of the roads near where I live. Believe it or not this has been like this for at least a year, possibly as long as a year and a half. Just up the road both ways are the 40km/h and traffic hazard ahead signs. It's getting to the point I wonder if they'll make them permanent fixtures.

I should be near where they placed a giant steel plate over the road in the next day or so. I'll take a pic of that too as it truly needs to be seen to be believed.

Never heard of it.

It's a free to play VR MMO. Whilst I haven't played it, I have seen it before in my search for VR games back when I used my OG VIVE.

I do not know who Alexandra Marshall is. I have not heard of her before. I can see from a quick search she is a journalist/columnist, and perhaps a poor one at that.

Having said that I based my post above solely on the tweet in the OP and, taking it at face value, what I believed she was referring to in it.

In either of those scenarios it would be construed that it was their balcony, at least for the duration of the rental agreement or stay at the hotel.

If they were to invite someone over would they say to said person(s) would you like to come over to my house/apartment/hotel room? Or would they say would you like to come over to the house/apartment I rent or hotel room I've rented for the foreseeable future?

A couple of things:

1. Not my property.
2. Its not the local law enforcement that would be shooting. Its the visitors that theyre worried about.

As an Australian I can see what she is saying, albeit I don't think she has expressed herself very well.

As I'm sure applies to everywhere, there are multiple levels of politics. I believe what she means is when local councils think it is their responsibility to enact for all of the state or country, instead of for the people they are directly responsible for.

To put it in perspective, Australia has 3 levels of politics. Federal, state (or territory) and local government (councils). So, that's 1 governing body at the federal level, 6 state and 2 territory governments (territories are like states only they are not held to all laws the states are. Eg, fireworks can be purchased in the NT (Northern Territory) and the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) at least for part of the year, yet can not be purchased in any state whatsoever), and then we have our local councils, all 537 of them, of which more than half are located in regional, rural or remote areas.

Now don't get me wrong, local councils are a vital part of our society. The issues that I believe this lady is referring to comes when local councils start to look beyond their borders or responsibilities and want to get involved in things not necessarily at their level of government, all while ignoring, or minimising, some of their responsibilities to their local constituents.

In her message above she refers to the councils responsibility to fixing local streets. This is one job they are currently not doing very well, if at all. Our roads are literally falling apart yet the councils try to shirk responsibility. I live in a regional area where the nearest (small) town is about 40km away (about a half hour drive). During that drive I have to avoid at least a dozen, possibly 15-16 potholes in the road. That's not counting the 30-40 that have been temporarily fixed (when I say fixed I mean someone has put a pile of asphalt in the hole which will slowly come out again over the next few weeks or so). Two of the potholes take up more than a quarter of the lane I'm travelling in, and in one area they placed a giant steel plate over the whole road and stuck a few 40km/h signs next to it. All the while our council has become heavily invested in some federal political agenda (an agenda I agree with, although I do not agree that our council should involve itself).

So, as I said, I can see what she's saying. She's just not saying it very well.
