Once it's fused, it becomes a more durable weapon, but not impressively durable. And when it's close to breaking, you can undo the fuse (the 2nd item gets destroyed). It retains its status of being close to breaking. If you fuse to a different item, it will still be close to breaking. So really not much different in that department.
