Ariel is really dumb. Ursula told Ariel that the men up there don't like a lot of blather, they think a girl who gossips is a bore. So Ariel believes that on land, it was much preferred for ladies not to say a word. The men aren't all that impressed with conversation. True gentlemen avoided it when they could. But a lady who's withdrawn? They dote and swoon and fawn.

So Ariel went up there with the belief that it's the one who holds her tongue who gets her man. She was trying to win Eric over with her looks, her pretty face, and of course, the all important BODY LANGUAAAAAGE.
