i've been to that area quite a bit on business - the mall is pretty close to corporate - and allen's reportedly one of the safest cities in texas, second only to like plano next door.

i'll have to check in on my former colleagues in the area. it's regrettable that allen's subject to an ordeal like this, it's a really nice place.

The internet was the best from the early 00s to maybe like 2016, but its prime was definitely like 2000 - 2010ish.

i will say the mid-late 2010s was a high watermark for zoomer flavored internet culture, but the broader internet really descended into the walled garden hellscape it is now by 2015

the broader internet peaked in 2006, all went downhill with smartphones

i could have sworn that the legal precedent established by jazz-related lawsuits in the early 20th century is that chord progressions are permissible to copy, but melodies/countermelodies/etc. aren't.

napster was before my time online. my primary source of music online in the early 00s was windows music player (a lot of the media streamed was direct links to wma and mp3 files), directories of music i found on google later on, and the occasional fansite. most heavily listened to midi files in the mid-00s rather than mp3s, so those weren't hard to come by. briefly dabbled in filesharing software by way of frostwire in college (late 00s), but the quality variance bothered me. in my early college years i especially swore by imeem.

it's a reciprocal dynamic - celebrities get access to the power of politicians, politicians garner popular legitimacy from celebrities
