it was a console FPS available on PS and Xbox, and marketed as a somewhat realistic military shooter. Of course it got popular. Thats another thing I cannot understand - FPS with a controller. Ive only played one at a friends house and after 5 seconds trying to aim with the right analog stick I was screaming for a mouse and keyboard. GoldenEye on N64 did it right, but you arent expected to be precise in that game and it also has a degree of auto-aim.
