The "this is how democracy dies; to thunderous applause" scene would have had a lot more impact if instead of one old asshole tricking the well meaning senators into becoming a dictatorship due to one manufactured incident they showed that old Palps had a bunch of Senators whose pet projects he agreed to support for their vote or regulations they didn't like he would get removed; maybe even have a rival trading company to the trade federation he was manipulating promising all sorts of kickbacks to various senators.. I mean political donations if they voted for Palpatine. Really show that the corruption is in there deep.
