New on List: We Have a Ghost, Perpetrator, Candy Land

Watched our first film on Tubi. As a platform I guess I appreciate a free option to catch more films, though the ads can be a little hard to get used to. I guess I did grow up in a generation where you couldn't avoid commercial breaks, but I'm not used to it! I don't want to go back!

Anyway, Candy Land is a movie about a former member of a religious cult who is tossed out for conflicting beliefs. She's left at a truck stop, which doubles as a well known prostitution spot. Our "protagonist" is essentially a black widow; believing herself to be sent by God to cleanse sinners from the world. It's not a bad movie, but I do think near the end it's sort of one kill after another. None of the characters fight back either, at all. I have to dock points from a film that portrays the antagonist as nearly unstoppable when they're not even supernatural. Even Michael and Jason get their asses kicked every once in a while, or at least someone tries to. Here everyone falls over dead like ragdolls. It's a bit immersion breaking by the end. That said, the acting is fairly good and it feels competent. Not a bad watch, maybe not a great one either, but okay.

We watched Perpetrator on Shudder tonight...

I am just so beside myself. What in the hell, seriously. Why does this movie have a good RT score? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering two other films I think very little of were so well received but yeah... complete and total garbage. So disjointed, so many ideas just thrown at the canvas hoping something might stick. There's just no cohesive storytelling to be found; one moment the movie seems like it wants to be high brow and try to make metaphors, but the next you just have these "Scooby Doo" moments where a plan is hatched by teens and they try to carry it out. Then it's back to total nonsense again. I'm really searching for something good to say about this movie but there's just nothing there. I even said near the end while watching that a "twist" better not happen, and then of course it fucking does just minutes later.

Just pretend artsy garbage that doesn't even manage to be artsy anyway.

4/5 teams held under 100 by the Wolves, tops in the league. Very impressive, really could have been all the games if not for that complete meltdown against Atlanta to allow Murray to go off like he did.

Fiiiinalllly got around to watching We Have a Ghost on Netflix. We've been a little daunted by it since it has a run time of a little over two hours, which is fairly long especially by the standards of any horror film, especially one that's a lot more comedy than horror.

That being said, it's a really sweet film. It has a little bit of cliche going on here and there, but I found myself really drawn in by the main characters. David Harbour is obviously just so lovable but I thought Jahi Di'Allo Winston playing the lead protagonist here was also very charming. I enjoyed his interactions with both Ernest (Harbour's character) and his father. I was a little moved by this film a couple of times, I won't lie. It's more of a dramatic comedy mystery, but obviously since it plays off the trope of a ghost haunting a house it borrows a bit from the horror genre as well. I'm glad to have finally watched it; the runtime didn't seem the length it was advertised with how much I enjoyed it.

New on List: Alone At Night, The Devil Comes at Night, Slotherhouse

Slotherhouse is a schlock that doesn't ever pretend to be something it isn't. The ridiculous premise is coupled with what a lot of horror movies this year have been I've noticed; heavily tied to our society's reliance on social media. The character name introductions were cute, and we went back a few times trying to read their mini-biographies. Does Alpha look that great most of the time? Ehhhh... not really, but it's charming in a way. I will say I don't really understand why Alpha wanted to kill Madison so bad, she was the only character who actually wanted to get her back in the wild. For a while I was thinking well okay, she doesn't want that... but turns out by the end, that's what she wanted? So why kill Madison? I guess this is the wrong movie to worry about making sense, but it did sort of take me out of it a bit so I have to dock it points for that.

It's fun and goofy. So long as you know that going in it'll be a fine watch.

We watched The Devil Comes at Night last night. Interesting movie... not a bad one. Short run time but it throws you right into the action pretty quickly with very little build up. The acting is good; the leads have good chemistry together and the main villain plays the part pretty well also. Big twist near the end I didn't see coming... The main character isn't who he says he is, at all. In fact we never even learn his name. It's a really clever twist I did not see coming; there's really only a few little clues to it. The first is when Amy says his father was half his size, and then the second comes with his reply that his mother fed him well. Only he doesn't say "mom", he calls her by her first name. He does seem to know waaaay too much about Ben to just be his AA sponsor though, so I don't know. It's nothing super great, but it's closer to being good than bad for sure.

Slotherhouse is on Hulu apparently, didn't realize that. Probably watching that tonight.

Alone At Night watched.

Well, I do agree it was bad. Certainly not good at all. But it's still not the worst thing I've seen this year. The plot was paper thin. I will say... I have to wonder why the kill to begin the movie seemed to be so unrelated and unconnected to the main character. It's barely referenced; it's almost like the people killed in this movie just vanish into thin air also because no one seems to report them missing because no one ever seems to realize they're dead. The family "Max" kills and replaces is the only real time someone actually goes looking for them, but it's brushed off and never mentioned despite it being a relatively easy crime to solve with loads of evidence literally in the house.

The cutaways to the Trap House people were so awful, but by the end, it was reaching the "so awful it's funny" level. That little music video to end things, my god what a hilarious abomination that was.

Slightly shifted Hunt Her, Kill Her up a little.

Zombie Town: Basically, what you'd expect. This is a full length Goosebumps story. The premise is that a retired zombie film director, whom we are reminded has been retired for 30 years and last released a film in 1993 (this stings, yikes...) is coming back with a new picture. He drops the film reel off at a local theater, where our main character works. Our main character has a crush on a girl, whom is a fan of this director even though he is not, and eventually to get in her good graces decides to show her the film early. It turns out that the film is cursed, and turns everyone else in the town into the real zombies.

The Eye of Ra, for whatever reason, is a protective device against turning into one yourself so our heroes and the director are both not affected. The director even seems to have some sort of ability to control the zombies, which is not readily explained very well.

I mean, it is what it is. It's a serviceable Goosebumps style story but it doesn't really reinvent the wheel or anything. It's interesting to see what Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase are up to these days I guess.

Dark Nature: This movie features a group of women led into the Canadian wilderness by a doctor, whom has a treatment on various sorts of mental anguish that revolves around heading out into the wild to face your fears. The concept is good, and it seems to start off well enough with sticking to the idea, unfortunately... it just sort of devolves into a standard horror film about some sort of forest creature/spirit in the woods preying on these women. It tries to keep the theme about how the monster tries to use their trauma to harm and weaken them, but honestly it doesn't do that great of a job with it.

Ultimately, I felt this was yet another one of those "it's just there, not offensive but not that interesting". Disappointing to find another of these.

I feel like my list needs a few more stinkers on it though, so I'm always in search of them! Who knows maybe I'll like it, somehow. I'm pretty forgiving which is why most things I watch end up as a B or C ranked film. I'd love to get a few more Ds and Fs before the year comes to an end. I doubt I'll watch too many of these 2023 films into 2024; I'll probably do this little project again next year with next year's films, and I can't get too far behind trying in vain to watch up on films from this year, so I have to get in as many as I can.

I'd rather get in a few awful films than loads more "meh" movies.

I just watched Alone At Night which came out this year. It is probably the worst horror movie I've ever seen. 0/10. Description of this abomination of film in my marathon topic.

I actually didn't have this on my list, I'll be sure to add it! I may be missing some stuff that came out before Skinamarink. Despite it being the worst film I've seen this year (and ever at all), it was what inspired my ranking project. I'd love for it to have competition near the bottom, though I can't imagine it will. If you want more awful shit that came out this year to end out your month, don't skip out on The Unseen. THE Unseen, not Unseen. Make sure it's the one with the guy who played Walter Jr. from Breaking Bad starring in it.

Tonight I think we're watching something called Dark Nature.

Started today off with The Puppetman. I'm a bit conflicted on how I feel overall on this one. On the positive side of things I thought the kills were very well done, very grotesque stuff with tons of gore and creativity. The acting was pretty good, and the characters were written in a way I thought to be at least be decent for a movie of this nature. I like the idea of this movie, but I think unfortunately at times the titular antagonist is a bit... murky, for my liking.

There's just not a lot of rhyme or reason that I found. Like... there just seems to be no weakness, no flaws or way to stop The Puppetman. Yet near the end, he can "sleep"? Or maybe that was just another lie and he was pulling the strings still. The thing is, why did he seem to fear Ruby so much and why was Ruby immune from his grasp? Like it seems to possess this otherworldly power to mind control just about anyone, but then there's a conflicting element to that as well. Can someone kill it if it's just taken by surprise? And initially, we're led to believe Michal's emotions have an influence on what it does, and that those killed are ones that hurt her. But later in the film, the demon sort of just kills indiscriminately without needing that caveat.

Also, why did the family decide to worship this cult anyway? What benefit was there, as the father seems to suggest there really wasn't any. Typically demonic religions at least come with the offering of power or wealth for a price, but there seemed to be none of that here.

I don't know, I'm probably looking in too deep but these are questions that just immediately spring to mind. I mean it was still a fine film, but there are so many issues I have that it's hard for me to think of it as great.

KAT hasn't been the same since his mom died several years ago

Yeah, I've seen a lot of people say this. I personally as a fan really like this T-Wolves team; I think the pieces are there to really be great. But there's been more and more publicity later and unless they can be one of the top teams in the West by the deadline, I can't picture KAT not getting shipped off at this point. I don't want it to happen, but it's what I feel is pretty likely to happen.
