I personally liked the new Hulu original Appendage a whole lot more than No One Will Save You. Not as much hype around it, lesser scores across the board, but I think it's very worth the watch.

So far the 31 films for 31 days is going well. I'll probably only post thoughts in like groups of 3 to avoid my massive list of films being posted 30+ times. We watched Hulu's new original, Appendage, last night. Tonight we are watching There's Something Wrong With the Children.

I think the issue was that the writers/producers were so afraid of legal issues from Disney that they went out of their way to make sure that no one could get it confused with Disney's HAW that it made it borderline unrecognizable.

The 80's one is a classic despite some of the campy moments; I was very excited for the remake a couple of years ago and it left me feeling disappointed. I think the best thing about the original is that most of the actors just felt better fit for their roles than the newer ones did. John Lithgow is a great actor and everything, but how can you fill the shoes of Fred Gwynne in this role? Hard to accomplish.

We watched No One Can Save You last night. Posted my thoughts in the main horror topic... yeah, I didn't love it unfortunately.

So we ended up watching No One Can Save You last night because I wanted to try and watch 31 films for the 31 days in October. No clue whether or not that's feasible yet. We certainly won't run out of movies to watch, but the time constraints may not allow for it. We'll just have to see I guess.

Honestly... I didn't love this one. I was hoping to, but I think it's just one of those "not for me" films, perhaps. I'll focus on the positives first; the monster design was great as was the sound direction. Really, there's nothing wrong with the movie other than the writing I thought. I knew going in there we be almost no dialogue to speak of, and if it's done well I don't think that would be a huge problem. My issue resides with how dumb the aliens are. They seemingly are able to never have trouble except with this one random, skinny white girl who enjoys kicking their asses and foiling their schemes. Brynn never comes across like she's Ellen Ripley or anything but still manages to be the alien slayer she is; it's just weird to see. Once they do finally capture her, things get a bit ambiguous for me. They leave her uninfected, either because the entire town hated her and maybe they feel sorry for her or that they perceive no threat now that she can be at peace with herself... despite the fact she's clearly capable of kicking their asses.

I don't know. I was a good bit disappointed with it. C tier for me.

It turns out the way to make a good Saw film is, unsurprisingly, not have John Kramer dead. Probably the best film in the entire franchise (in my opinion, II and Spiral are close), it's an undoubted return to form for the main franchise itself. Even at over 80 now, Tobin Bell puts on a masterful performance as Kramer and like most of the other films in the franchise, puts the role of what is typically seen as the "villain" into a sympathetic light as more of the antihero protagonist. This one is particularly more personal because it focuses on Jigsaw's fight with his brain tumor as he searches for some means of survival. He is personally duped by an intricate scheme to con him out of a quarter of a million dollars so seeing him personally take revenge on a group of people so heinous and despicable was a lot of fun. It is also probably one of the goriest films of the franchise too; several times I did recoil from the mess on the screen, and I'm not a particularly squeamish person when it comes to gore. It's done extremely well for the most part.

I wouldn't consider myself much of a fan of the franchise, but this film really makes me wish they were able to continue to plot of Saw without the poor decisions they made in III. It was nice to see both John and Amanda back here. There were so many really clever twists that I did not see coming, and though cheering on Jigsaw might feel weird, it's probably the most justified doing so ever has been.

High praise early for this one, so we'll see. I really liked Spiral so I hope this one is more story driven the way that one was. I also recently subscribed to Disney+, and by extension Hulu. Probably will be checking out their exclusives here in a bit as well.

Oh yeah, 4 way works a bit different in the final. You choose them in reverse order of the way you'd like to see them finish. Basically, I think in the old days when we ran gauntlets as a group we'd take a poll on who to vote out. I guess it's like elimination style, not sure what the thinking of doing that it that way was about.

He doesn't look that old if you look up the picture itself, I think the shading and reducing the image size to 150x150 might not do it justice much. I like Edgar too much to make him suffer with an Amano art. There are a few characters I had to leave that way though.

No problem, glad you spent a lot of time with it! I was going to say those win totals seem very low for a double elimination gauntlet, but I guess if you used the Burn feature it probably evens out. I just sort of like the chaos it brings when you play it straight out, would have been nice to see those results even if you didn't like them. I would say only about half of the characters who placed in my gauntlet would be in my actual top 10, but the other half were fine enough and I wasn't super upset that any of them made it that far either.

But yeah, it did take a lot of effort (just to get the FF portion of it running like it is now), so I appreciate everyone who's played it so far. Probably got more people than I was initially expecting, glad you all liked it.

Yeah didn't we all MAKE one of these before? I guess it doesn't seem weird to me because I've never stopped using the program for years now, even when everyone else probably did.

I'm not great at tech support. Uh... once you unpack the file, you should have a folder that says VideoGameCharacters. Make sure that folder has no spaces in it. I'd suggest just unpacking it directly to your desktop to remove any troubles. After that, you open the folder and keep clicking until you get to the where you see a set of folders and files. Then you should just be able to click the one that says "GauntletApplication"; it's JAR file with a java icon.

Ah yes, my second favorite Final Fantasy character *checks notes.* Lu'cia.

I played Brave Exvius, and I'm still surprised how many Brave Exvius characters there were.

I don't think anyone was more surprised than me when I went to add all of them. I already had done some of them here and there, but the extent of my knowledge of the game was pretty small. I knew of the main cast, and of course Dangerous Ariana because of this contest.

Lopen posted...
Finally got around to finishing it. That took a bit! I knew most of the Brave Exvius characters which probably made it take longer. Edward and Fighter kinda snuck in (not terrible picks though) but otherwise don't hate the top 10. Sephiroth murdered most of the snubs like Rikku Sabin and Vanille-- I should have let him win. Not sure why I went with Genesis with the swerve win I just felt like he was fighting harder opponents than X-Death who was mostly just eating fodder. But yeah it was fun. Honestly think the 8 that didn't sneak in are probably actually in the top 10.

It's time to nominate Genesis back and get Charon in as well for VI. Then the dream of Genny and I competing in SMFFFC will be realized.

Xuxon posted...
I guess Kefka is now only my fourth favorite FFVI character. And Ultros fifth. Terra for SMFFFCXXVI champ!

Of the 4 of these that have been completed so far, Tidus is in every single one of them. I guess for some reason I didn't think Tidus was your #1?

Oh and I'm sure it's been noticed, but I did use high quality level fanart for some of the characters. This was moreso for characters from IX and back due to how ugly those graphics look in general. Unless they appeared in Dissidia, basically all there is in Amano artwork. Which is... yeah. The most famous artist I know of with awful looking work. Sometimes Mobius would have something, or that trading card game, but in some cases fanart was the best route for me to go. Another SMFFFC entrant I don't have in Burmecian Soldier Dan because well, there's just no good shots of him in game and no one cared enough to do very good fanart. Someone did cosplay for him though, for some reason. But yeah, the list might not be infallible so if anyone notices something missing feel free to mention it here or send me a message. I'm always happy to add stuff. For XIV, which I haven't played because I'm already and invested WoW player, I tried my best to add what seemed critical and popular. It would be impossible to add every character from XIV, much like WoW.

So I wanted to have this ready before SMFFFC ended, but I guess this will do. Some people probably know what a Gauntlet is, it's sort of a relic from the past at this point. But I do actually keep one of these gauntlets up to date, and it's the video game character one. I figured it might be fun to share it and my own results, and see if anyone else maybe wanted to play it:

https://i.imgur.com/OyVkYgy.jpg

Essentially, a "gauntlet" is just running a program that pits 2 (or 4) characters against one another. You choose the one you like more and they move on. The program randomly selects more characters and you keep picking the ones you like until there are no more characters left. I decided to put in the work and update all the images for Final Fantasy characters I wasn't personally happy with. I also tried to add in anything that was missing from the gauntlet too, which included adding the entirety of Brave Exvius (which was a huge chore).

https://www.mediafire.com/file/8d55dbs7035o2hi/VideoGameCharacters.rar/file

Basically you just download the file and unzip it; it's a pretty big file because it contains over 38,000 video game characters. Just a few things to note about it. I didn't create the program, I just curate the content. You will need to use a "tag" to run it, the tag for Final Fantasy is just "ff" without the quotations. You will also need to know the exact number of characters that I've tagged with that, which is 1307. So yeah, obviously this is a very inclusive list! You will indeed find Stamp and ?????? here. For the purposes of SMFFFC, the only stuff that isn't going to be there is anything that never appeared in a video game. So no Dad of Light, and no Aki Ross. Square must either not have the rights to do it or don't want to be reminded of the time they lost that much money, because she never even appeared in Record Keeper or Brave Exvius.

Anyway, hopefully someone enjoys this. Like I said, despite gauntlets being dead I keep this one relatively up to date (it's current through June of this year right now). I mostly continue to maintain it because it keeps me up to date on games I don't have time to play anymore.

Also I notice Martin is saving Locke, despite Vanille being on his pyramid at one point. Is this merely to remove an obstacle from Aeris' path next year, or does he no longer like Vanille!

I mean, he's not obligated to save a character he said he likes more... you know, that sounds familiar!

Pretty good one. Wonderful monster design. It reminds me of The Boogeyman a little bit, just the film setup in general. Great monster, does the best it can do with a PG-13 rating. I think this one has a bit more in the way of actual scares and terror than Boogeyman was able to offer but just a little bit, hence why it got up into the A tier. I really liked learning about Indian mythology a bit here, since it isn't that common to see (at least for me) an Indian based horror title even though there are so many great stories to pull from in the culture. I was a little bummed that the only person who died on screen was the poor little white guy but eh, I still really enjoyed my time with it.
