See I don't understand this. As a "minority" type person in the USA (when I lived there), I'm not the biggest fan of the police. They're not always the nicest people. But society will fall apart without policing, you see this happen in the third world all the time. Sure, we can all walk around our neighborhoods with AK-47s, but is that what you want to live under? There has to be a third party at all times who will be there when it hits the fan so that the bare basics of justice/order are overseen.

The Situational Context of Police Sexual Violence: Data and Policy Implications
Philip Matthew Stinson, Robert W. Taylor, and John Liederbach

Abstract
The horrors of sexual crimes perpetrated by law enforcement officers are laid bare in this study of 669 cases of police sexual violence. Here, authors Philip Matthew Stinson, Robert W. Taylor, and John Liederbach identify three scenarios in which law enforcement officers inflict sexual violence upon their mostly-female victims: 1) driving while female, 2) child predation, and 3) involvement in the sex worker industry. Especially sobering is the fact that, as opposed to law enforcement doing its solemn duty to report criminality on the part of fellow police officers, citizens rather than police initiated the detection of the crimes in almost all the cases, whether the context involved child predation (94.8%), driving while female (94.7%), or the sex worker industry (90.8%). Rather than an anomaly, sexual predation on the part of police, along with the routine cover-ups that perpetuate these crimes, appears to be just one component of the rotten barrel that depicts a culture of police corruption.

Add this to the success with the rail workers strike. The Biden admin helped secure mandatory paid sick leave for these workers.

https://www.ibew.org/media-center/Articles/23Daily/2306/230620_IBEWandPaid

After months of negotiations, the IBEWs Railroad members at four of the largest U.S. freight carriers finally have what theyve long sought but that many working people take for granted: paid sick days.

This is a big deal, said Railroad Department Director Al Russo, because the paid-sick-days issue, which nearly caused a nationwide shutdown of freight rail just before Christmas, had consistently been rejected by the carriers. It was not part of last Decembers congressionally implemented update of the national collective bargaining agreement between the freight lines and the IBEW and 11 other railroad-related unions.

Were thankful that the Biden administration played the long game on sick days and stuck with us for months after Congress imposed our updated national agreement, Russo said. Without making a big show of it, Joe Biden and members of his administration in the Transportation and Labor departments have been working continuously to get guaranteed paid sick days for all railroad workers.

We know that many of our members werent happy with our original agreement, Russo said, but through it all, we had faith that our friends in the White House and Congress would keep up the pressure on our railroad employers to get us the sick day benefits we deserve. Until we negotiated these new individual agreements with these carriers, an IBEW member who called out sick was not compensated.

While President Joe Biden was calling on Congress in November to pass legislation to implement the agreement, he stressed that he would continue to encourage the railroads to guarantee paid sick time for their employees.

I share workers concern about the inability to take leave to recover from illness or care for a sick family member, Biden said. I have pressed legislation and proposals to advance the cause of paid leave in my two years in office and will continue to do so.

That pressure, plus the IBEWs ongoing efforts, is paying off at last. The IBEW and BNSF Railway reached an agreement April 20 to grant members four short-notice, paid sick days, with the ability to also convert up to three personal days to sick days. The union reached similar understandings with CSX and Union Pacific on March 22, and with Norfolk Southern on March 10. Unused sick time at the end of a year can be paid out or rolled into a workers 401(k) retirement account.

Under the Railway Labor Act, national railroad labor agreements dont expire. Instead, the parties enter a status quo position: Workers remain on the job with no changes to their pay and benefits until a replacement contract is approved. The current national pact was first reached last summer by negotiators from the railroad unions, the railroads, the Labor Department and the White House.

Weve been playing the long game on this, too, Russo said. We never stopped applying pressure on the companies or on Congress.
On Feb. 8, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, wrote a letter to the leaders of six Class I railroads, urging them to guarantee at least seven paid sick days for all of their workers.

Last year, the companies you lead made over $22 billion in profits, Sanders wrote, noting that they had cut 30% of the workforce over the last six years. Guaranteeing seven paid sick days to rail workers would cost your industry just $321 million.
Russo is grateful that Sanders stepped in. We truly compliment his effort to bring dignity to workers in the rail industry, he said. Without it, we very likely would not have gotten what we have gained today.

Sick leave had always been a sticking point in negotiations toward a national rail contract update, which began in late 2019.

After almost 2 years of ongoing refusal by the Class I rail carriers to accept the unions good-faith settlement offers or to offer their own, the IBEW and the other unions sought help from the National Mediation Board in early 2022. By July, the carriers still hadnt budged.
Once the mediators determined that negotiations were at an impasse, Biden appointed a Presidential Emergency Board to hear testimony from both camps. While this board made a number of positive recommendations in its proposal including improved health care benefits and one additional personal day guaranteed paid sick days still was not among them.

Even so, the IBEW said Sept. 1 that it had reached a tentative agreement with the rail carriers that included the boards recommendations. Negotiations with the other labor coalition unions continued toward a Sept. 15 deadline, but when it became obvious that the bargaining parties would not reach consensus by then, Biden asked then-Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh to assemble the sides and reach an acceptable agreement that would head off a national freight rail strike.

On deadline day, the parties reached an agreement on an updated contract that included the biggest wage increases in 47 years. Over the next several weeks, while acknowledging that the agreement was less than perfect, the IBEW and several of its fellow coalition unions voted to ratify the agreement. A handful of others, however, did not, instead threatening a December freight rail strike.

Biden, citing the potential economic impact of a national freight rail strike during the winter holidays, on Nov. 28 called on Congress to impose the emergency boards agreement.
Since then, several other railroad-related unions have also seen success in negotiating for similar sick-day benefits. These 12 unions represent more than 105,000 railroad workers.

Biden deserves a lot of the credit for achieving this goal for us, Russo said. He and his team continued to work behind the scenes to get all of rail labor a fair agreement for paid sick leave.
Russo said talks are continuing toward reaching a sick-days agreements with Canadian Pacific and Kansas City, recently designated a Class I rail carrier by the Surface Transportation Board.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/22/politics/joe-biden-michigan-trip-uaw/index.html

President Joe Biden will travel to Michigan on Tuesday and walk the picket line with members of the United Auto Workers union, he announced Friday, a trip that comes after the president faced political pressure to ramp up his public support for the union members.

Tuesday, Ill go to Michigan to join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of UAW as they fight for a fair share of the value they helped create. Its time for a win-win agreement that keeps American auto manufacturing thriving with well-paid UAW jobs, Biden said in a post to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Bidens trip, and the historic presidential appearance on a picket line, underscores the political opportunity as the strike against the nations three largest automakers General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis enters its second week. It will come one day before former President Donald Trump, currently the front-runner in the GOP presidential race, is scheduled to deliver a prime-time speech to an audience of current and former union members, including from UAW, in Detroit. Earlier in the week, Trumps team confirmed he would be skipping the second Republican primary debate for the Michigan speech.

The former president on Saturday lambasted Bidens plans, claiming Biden is only going to Michigan because Trump had announced his own trip. Crooked Joe Biden had no intention of going to visit the United Autoworkers, until I announced that I would be heading to Michigan to be with them, Trump posted on Truth Social. If the UAW leadership doesnt ENDORSE me, and if I dont win the Election, the Autoworkers are toast, with our great truckers to follow.

While Biden has repeatedly touted his status as the most pro-labor president, the UAW has yet to offer an endorsement of his reelection bid as he faces low polling numbers on his handling of economic issues.

Union members, once a reliable Democratic voting block, have gradually gravitated to Republican candidates, according to CNN polls and the AFL-CIO. However, UAW President Shawn Fain publicly denounced Trumps trip earlier this week.
Bidens Tuesday trip was first reported by The Washington Post.
Earlier in the day, Fain invited Biden to join the picket lines after announcing an escalation of the unions strike.

As I tried to allude to earlier... it really is different in a lot more ways than just that. The effects of hookup culture and the lasting effects of the delegitimization of gay couples as a family, the much, much smaller pool of potential partners, and the passive, invisible fear from having an identity that is not the "default"... well, it all really takes a toll, to say the least. I don't even live in a super-conservative area, either, but I still don't feel comfortable being openly gay and never discuss my preference with anyone, and I haven't felt like I could actually express my real self since college.
Also this. I want to quote your original post because it was excellent.

the_rowan posted...
Imagine if you started out with a normal sized group of people your age, eliminating half for being the wrong sex as you would if you were straight, but then you eliminate another 90-95% of people for being straight, another 95% of what's left for people who only want to hook up and have no interest in a real relationship, and another 75% of what's left because they only want super dominant/submissive types or are otherwise incompatible with your interests, and you're not allowed to ask out anyone without the use an intermediary online app in the first place outside of very specific settings.

Imagine every time anyone you encounter talks about how hot some woman is or their family at home, you just kind of have to nod and say nothing.

Imagine walking on eggshells for virtually everything related to romance and relationships around your family.

Imagine it being infinitely harder to find positive role models and places to learn about how to present oneself and impress people if you want to try dating.

IDK, my experience with it has been pretty miserable outside of the time I was living on a college campus.

Persecution is not unique to gay people. People suffer from persecution for all sorts of different reasons, some of which have to do with their sexuality and some of which do not.

The only difference core to being gay is who your'e attracted to, this is a big part of why it's so idiotic that some people hate them for it.
The point is that all things equal, a gay person has an extra hurdle that a straight person does not. Of course there are plenty of ways people can be persecutedthose of which can apply to gay or straight people. However, a straight person is not going to face persecution for being straight, whereas a gay person is incredibly likely to.

Singer urged US fanbase to use their powerful voices by taking action on National Voter Registration Day

Taylor Swift managed to drive record-breaking numbers to voter registration website Vote.org after urging her 232 million followers on Instagram to take action.
On Tuesday (19 September), hours after the pop star, 32, called on her US fanbase to register to vote in honour of National Voter Registration Day, Vote.orgs communication director, Nick Morrow, announced that our site was averaging 13,000 users every 30 minutes.
Fun fact: after @taylorswift13 posted on Instagram today directing her followers to register to vote on @votedotorg, our site was averaging 13,0000 users every 30 minutes, Morrow wrote on X/Twitter.

13! Lets just say her reputation for being a mastermind is very well-earned.
Earlier that day, the Anti-Hero singer had posted to her Story, asking followers: Are you registered to vote yet?

Ive been so lucky to see so many of you at my US shows recently, she continued, referring to her ongoing Eras Tour, which wrapped up its first leg of North American dates in August.
Ive heard you raise your voices, and I know how powerful they are. Make sure youre ready to use them in our elections this year! Swift added, sharing a link to Vote.org.

Today, on National Voter Registration Day, its vital that young voters, in particular, understand they have the power to shape their future, said Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org.
Eight million young people will be newly eligible voters by Election Day 2024. And, the time is now to get ready for the elections taking place this fall and next year. Several states have elections in November of this year and many other states will have primaries in the first few months of 2024. Thats why this National Voter Registration Day is so important: were at the starting line of the next presidential election.
Swift first broke her political silence in 2018 to endorse Democratic candidates and urge fans to vote. Her political outspokenness came after she had previously faced criticism for not engaging in major political moments in the US, such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2016 presidential election.

In a 2021 interview with Vanity Fair, she credited the Trump presidency with pushing her to publicly endorse the Democrats.
As a country musician, I was always told its better to stay out of [politics], Swift explained. The Trump presidency forced me to lean in and educate myself. I found myself talking about government and the presidency and policy with my boyfriend [then actor Joe Alwyn], who supported me in speaking out.

She added: I started talking to my family and friends about politics and learning as much as I could about where I stand. Im proud to have moved past fear and self-doubt, and to endorse and support leadership that moves us beyond this divisive, heartbreaking moment in time.

See, this is a good argument (and Trump obviously isn't free of all wrongdoing or anything like that), but saying he did what Hitler did (or tried to) is just LOL

Intent is a guessing game, Hitler literally ordered killings. Trying to equate the two is a clown's errand
Hell, even the implication that he had to resort to dog whistles and hints makes the case that we're way more robust against attempts of this sort of fuckery than 1930s Germany was
You continue proving you have no idea what youre talking about. Hitler didnt immediately start up the camps. Dog whistles and propaganda were an integral part of the process.
