https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/11/politics/trump-asks-dc-trial-televised/index.html

Former President Donald Trumps legal team has formally told a federal court that he would like his election subversion trial in Washington, DC, to be televised.

Court rules do not allow for broadcasting of federal proceedings, and the Justice Department is opposed to allowing cameras. Several media outlets have asked the court to consider allowing cameras at the historic trial, set for March.

President Trump absolutely agrees, and in fact demands, that these proceedings should be fully televised, his attorneys wrote in the filing late Friday night.

The filing included several of Trumps criticisms that his case is illegitimate and that he is being deprived of his rights, and argued to the court that a televised trial would allow him to overcome the unfairness of the justice system because the public would watch it.

Speaking at a campaign event in New Hampshire on Saturday, Trump said he wants the trial to be seen by everybody in the world.

I want everybody to see all of the horrible things that took place, all of the horrible charges and lets let the public decide because I want cameras in every inch of that courthouse, he said.

In a long-shot attempt, a group of media organizations, including CNN, in October asked the federal judge overseeing the case, Tanya Chutkan, for permission to broadcast the trial given its historic nature. In a separate petition to the judge, NBCUniversal Media argued that the long-standing rule against cameras in federal criminal trials, which dates to the 1940s, is outdated and would violate the First Amendment if strictly enforced in the Trump case.

The media outlets argued there is significant public interest in allowing the trial to be broadcast, positing that video coverage would help undermine conspiracy theories surrounding the case.

Special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the case, opposes televising the federal election subversion trial.

Prosecutors wrote in a filing last week that federal courts are expressly prohibited from allowing proceedings in a courtroom from being broadcast or even photographed and that although the public was allowed to access some proceedings through teleconferences during the Covid-19 pandemic, the exception ended in September for criminal trials.

The former presidents trial is scheduled for March 4.

Trump faces four counts in the case, including conspiring to defraud the United States and to obstruct an official proceeding. The former president has pleaded not guilty.

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/11/ron-desantis-boot-lifts-foot-fetish

Responding to questions about his very likely use of height-enhancing boot lifts Thursday, Ron DeSantis said there are graver issues facing this country and suggested that anyone talking about the lengths he allegedly goes to give himself a few extra vertical inches has a sexual interest in feet.

This is no time for foot fetishes, are the words that literally came out of the 2024 hopefuls mouth. Weve got serious problems as a country. Weve got war in the Middle East. Weve got terrorists coming across our own southern border. We have an American dream thats out of reach for millions of Americans because of the Biden-flation and the high energy prices. Weve got schools that are indoctrinating kids, not educating kids, and weve got cities that are being overrun by crime."

" And I know people want to try to divert onto other issues, I know Donald Trump and a lot of his people have been focusing on things like footwear. Ill tell you this: If Donald Trump can summon the balls to show up to the debate, Ill wear a boot on my head. This is a time for substance.

Its not clear that anyone would be interested in seeing DeSantis wear a boot on his head. However, if he offered to wear his boots out onstage, and then take them off for the cameras so people could see once and for all if they have lifts inside them, that might actually put all of this to rest.

Earlier this week, in a tour de force of journalism, Politico ran a story in which some of the worlds leading bespoke footwear makers were were asked their professional opinions on whether or not DeSantis has been wearing boots with heels concealed on the inside. Their expert takeaways? Most definitely yes.

Ive dealt with these politicians many times, Zephan Parker, the proprietor of Texas-based bespoke boot maker Parker Boot Company, told the outlet. Ive helped them with their lifts. [DeSantis] is wearing lifts; theres no doubt.

DeSantis has vehemently denied doing so.

Shortly after the story ran, DeSantis rival Nikki Haleywas asked in an interview on The Daily Show if her heels were higher than the governors. I dont know, she responded. Well have to figure that out.

She added: Ive always talked about my high heels. Ive always said, Dont wear them if you cant run in them. So well see if he can run in them.

https://ew.com/books/steve-martin-proud-shopgirl-banned-in-florida-schools/

Some authors celebrate when their books become bestsellers, but Steve Martin is "proud" to see his novel on a different list.

In a cheerful social media post, the Only Murders in the Building star mocked the decision of one Florida school district to ban over 300 books, including his 2000 novella, Shopgirl.

"So proud to have my book Shopgirl banned in Collier County, Florida," Martin wrote on Instagram. "Now people who want to read it will have to buy a copy!"

The book, which was adapted into a 2005 movie starring Martin and Claire Danes, tells the story of a depressed woman working in a luxury department store who begins an affair with a wealthy businessman. Along with hundreds of titles, the novella was removed from libraries in the Collier County public school district in response to a Florida state law, HB 1069, making it easier to challenge any school library titles that "depicts or describes sexual conduct."

The move comes after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation last year requiring school libraries to seek community input on the materials they make available to students.

PEN America this week published a long list of titles impacted by the law, including a range of literary classics, popular YA fiction, and titles that center queer and POC voices. Authors with banned books include Toni Morrison, Stephen Chbosky, Neil Gaiman, John Green, Angie Thomas, Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, and Judy Blume.

Earlier this year, Blume, who authored the cherished but controversial Are You There God, It's Me Margaret, challenged the practice of banning and censoring children's books, while promoting her work with the National Coalition Against Censorship.

"What are you protecting your children from?" Blume asked. "Protecting your children means educating them and arming them with knowledge, and reading and supporting what they want to read."

It's the equivalent of Trump trying to say "There's no evidence Trump was involved" when everybody who worked for him was doing illegal shit.

Given the way a college football program is run, it seems there's almost no way he didn't know - whatever was going on, IMO.

Plus, simple logic says that if signs were being stolen by his staff (or whoever), that information is going to have to go somewhere and it's most likely going to be to the football coach. Can't see that information going to the softball team or the Economics Department, obviously.

Sounds no bueno.
