That said overall it's pretty faithful to the original. Yeah it's not 100% what the original was but that's pretty excusable considering the time gap between the two. Similarly all of the others made by 1C were also pretty faithful, and while they weren't all exactly recommendable (Warriors of the North *drags* with just how long it is, and the balancing is pretty garbo with how many busted new options were added) they can at least scratch the itch of wanting to play games from the series. On the flip side King's Bounty 2 is absolutely not at all close to the original in any way that matters. While it has a couple of niceties that act as improvements (such as being able to replenish armies in the field) the game itself is a buggy jank mess that reeks of them wanting to try and do a more modern take of balancing that strips a lot of the fun from doing things. Probably one of the best ways to describe it, besides the DLC OP units, is how if you pick mage you quite literally cannot use the mage final unit relevantly due to the unit cap. Certainly it was always a bit busted to be able to run in with a billion dragons, but there is something wrong with having a super low cap for units (at most 5) and then having your class aligned final unit cap being locked at 3/5 (and you have to be Paladin to be 5/5... or a Warrior specced into loyalty bits). --- "A shouted order to do something of dubious morality with an unpredictable outcome? I don't know if I would say it is exactly better than HoMM3, but it is certainly the top potential option. Tyranthraxus posted... But I've got some "kinda close" recommendations.King's Bounty is the predecessor to HoMM so it's also a good one to go with. That said, no one should ever support King's Bounty 2. That one is absolute garbage. Edit: Oh, and Hero's Hour is about as close to HoMM3 as you can get outside of being a HoMM game. It's just that funky balancing makes it a lot less appealing to actually play than Songs of Conquest. They just get manufactured exactly the same and get put into a "Great value" box.It isn't for enough to be relevant. And even then the quality isn't necessarily good even then.
