Israel will begin 4-hour pauses of military operations in northern Gaza each day, US says
From CNN's Kevin Liptak
Israel will begin to implement four-hour pauses of military operations in areas of northern Gaza each day, the White House says, to allow for humanitarian assistance and to allow civilians to flee.
Israel will announce the timing of the pauses three hours beforehand, according to John Kirby, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council.
"We've been told by the Israelis that there will be no military operations in these areas over the duration of the pause, and that this process is starting today," Kirby said.

Hostage deal between Israel and Hamas appears elusive as negotiations continue
From CNN's MJ Lee, Becky Anderson and Alex Marquardt
A deal to secure the release of a large number of hostages that Hamas is holding in Gaza appears elusive for now, despite active negotiations involving the US, Israel, Qatar and Hamas.
There is no prospect of Israel agreeing to a sustained pause in fighting without a substantial number of hostages being released, one senior US official told CNN. The multi-party talks in which Qatar is playing a key mediating role have been ongoing for weeks and have so far produced many ideas, including the release of around 10 to 15 hostages in exchange for a one- or two-day ceasefire, diplomatic sources close to the talks said.
But as of Wednesday, such a proposal was not on the table, the US official said.
One Israeli official said Israel was ready for a pause if there could be certainty that Hamas was serious about releasing hostages. What is not clear is how long of a pause Israel would be willing to agree to, and what would amount to an acceptable number of hostages released.
Negotiations have also centered around exchanging hostages for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, CNN has previously reported.
Only a handful of hostages including two American citizens have been released since the start of the war. After their successful exit, US President Joe Biden revealed that Israel had agreed to a brief ceasefire to secure their release.
The Biden administration has continued to call on Israel to put in place additional humanitarian pauses to facilitate the release of more hostages. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will not agree to a ceasefire without the release of hostages, a message he reiterated in a social media post Wednesday.
The weeks-long efforts to try to get a big group of hostages out have brought to light a myriad of complexities. The hostages, who are of various nationalities, are not believed to be in one location and it is not clear exactly how many of them are in Gaza; communication with Hamas is slow; and there are concerns about how to safely move any big group of civilians through Gaza when the strip is under constant bombardment.
Officials have also stressed that Hamas is far from a typical and by any means a trustworthy negotiating partner. Frankly, we're dealing with Hamas, a senior administration official said. This is not something that anyone is expecting [to be conducted in] good faith.

Israel will have "overall security responsibility" for Gaza for "indefinite period," Netanyahu claims
From CNN's Kareem El Damanhoury and Mitchell McCluskey
Israel will have the "overall security responsibility" in Gaza for an "indefinite period" after the war with Hamas ends, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in an interview that aired on ABC News Monday.
Gaza should be governed by those who dont want to continue the way of Hamas," Netanyahu said, adding: "I think Israel will, for an indefinite period, will have the overall security responsibility because weve seen what happens when we dont have it.
The prime minister also repeated that Israel will not allow a general ceasefire until all hostages are released by Hamas.
However, Netanyahu said he was open to short pauses to take place.
"As far as tactical little pauses, an hour here, an hour there. We've had them before, I suppose, we'll check the circumstances in order to enable goods, humanitarian goods to come in, or our hostages, individual hostages to leave. But I don't think there's going to be a general ceasefire," he said.
Netanyahu also addressed the role of Iran and Tehran-backed militant group Hezbollah in the conflict, cautioning them from becoming more involved.
"I think they've understood that if they enter the war in a significant way, the response will be very, very powerful and I hope they don't make that mistake," Netanyahu told ABC.

UN Security Council fails to agree on resolution to halt fighting in Gaza
From CNN's Richard Roth and Hamdi Alkhshali
In a private session Monday, the United Nations Security Council failed to reach a consensus on a draft resolution aimed at halting the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
There is no agreement at this point, said Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood.
The so-called E-10, consisting of 10 non-permanent member states of the Security Council, has drafted a resolution.
However, the United States and the United Kingdom, permanent members who possess veto power, have opposed it. Western powers, particularly the US and UK, are resistant to including language in the resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire, a proposition supported by several other Council members.
There have been discussions about humanitarian pauses, Wood said, "and we're interested in pursuing language on that score." But he added there was disagreement within the Security Council on whether that would be acceptable.
China's UN Ambassador Jun Zhang, echoed the sentiments expressed by Secretary-General Antnio Guterres, emphasizing that "Gaza is a graveyard for children." Zhang called for an urgent ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
As we speak, Palestinian civilians continue to be killed. Children are bearing the brunt, as several US officials have stated already. Gaza is becoming a graveyard for children. No one is safe, Zhang said.
The United Arab Emirates emphasized the importance of upholding the rules of warfare. UAE Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, who co-initiated the meeting with China, underlined that discussions within the Council were ongoing, and nations were working to bridge their differences.
We condemn the seventh October attacks by Hamas on Israel. We also condemned the indiscriminate attacks by Israel on the Gaza Strip. We express our grave concern that the continued detention of hostages and demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as their safety well-being and humane treatment consistent with international law, Nusseibeh said.
Nusseibeh added that the killing and maiming of children, attacks on schools and hospitals and the Gaza Strip and denying children access to humanitarian assistance are all very grave violations. against children.
During the meeting, UN humanitarian officials briefed the Security Council on the dire humanitarian situation in the region.
Previous attempts to pass resolutions in the Security Council have faced challenges, including two US vetoes, further underscoring the complexity of reaching a consensus on this critical issue.

US forces attacked 8 times since Friday in Iraq and Syria as Iranian-backed militias ramp up assaults
From CNN's Haley Britzky,
American troops were attacked an additional eight times since Friday morning by one-way attack drones and rocket barrages in Iraq and Syria as US forces face ramped-up assaults by Iranian-backed groups.
The new incidents one on Friday afternoon, another on Saturday, five more on Sunday and one on Monday morning mark a total of at least 38 attacks on US and coalition forces in those two nations since October 17, 10 days after the start of a bloody war between Israel and Hamas.
CNN has reported that Iran is seeking to capitalize on the backlash to US support for Israel, and while Tehran may not be explicitly directing the groups attacks, it does appear to be encouraging them.
While the increase in attacks started after the brutal attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, Pentagon officials have declined to draw a direct correlation between the increase in attacks and the conflict in Gaza, saying instead that Iran has long sought to force the US from the region.
Irans strategic objective for a very long time, way before October 7, was to force US forces to withdraw from the region, a senior defense official said on October 30. We have maintained tens of thousands of US forces across the region for decades. We have increased our air defense posture. Most of these attacks have been unsuccessful. But Irans strategic objective has not changed.
The dozens of attacks have largely focused on US and coalition forces at Al-Asad Airbase, Iraq, and al-Tanf Garrison, Syria, with some attacks near Mission Support Site Green Village in Syria; Bashur, Iraq; Mission Support Site Euphrates, Syria; Erbil Airbase, Iraq; Shaddadi, Syria; Rumalyn Landing Zone, Syria; and Tall Baydar, Syria.
On Friday afternoon, a one-way attack drone was shot down near Shaddadi, Syria, with no casualties or infrastructure damage reported, a US official updated on Monday. On Saturday morning, another one-way attack drone was shot down near Shaddadi with no casualties or infrastructure damage reported.
The attacks increased in frequency on Sunday totaling five separate incidents; one-way attack drones were shot down near Tall Baydar, Syria; al-Tanf Garrison, Syria; and three times near Al-Asad Airbase, Iraq. One attack on Al-Asad also included a multi-rocket attack alongside multiple one-way attack drones.
Another one-way attack drone was shot down near Tall Baydar, Syria, on Monday morning. None of the attacks over the weekend resulted in casualties or damage to infrastructure, according to the US official.
Most of these attacks were successfully disrupted by our military, the US official said. Most failed to reach their targets, thanks to our robust defenses.

Netanyahu: Israel will have overall security responsibility for Gaza for indefinite period after war ends

Israel will have the "overall security responsibility" in Gaza for an "indefinite period" after the war ends, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview that aired on ABC News on Monday.

The number of Palestinians killed in Gaza since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 has surpassed 10,000, the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza announced Monday.
Ashraf Al Qudra, spokesperson for the ministry, said 10,022 Palestinians in the enclave had been killed by Israeli strikes, including 4,104 children, 2,641 women and 611 elderly people. Those numbers suggest about three-quarters of the dead are from vulnerable populations.
The ministry reported another 25,408 people have been injured.
It's unclear how many combatants are included in the total. CNN cannot independently verify the numbers released by the ministry in Gaza, which is sealed off by Israel and mostly sealed by Egypt.
Some background: Israel declared war on Hamas after the Islamist militant group launched a brutal attack on October 7, killing 1,400 in Israel and kidnapping more than 240. Israel retaliated by launching an air and ground offensive on Gaza, vowing to eliminate the militant group.
Thousands more Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in the last month than those who died in conflicts with Israel spanning over the last 15 years.
The United Nations Human Rights Office said the attacks last week on Gazas largest refugee camp could amount to war crimes given the scale of casualties and destruction.

Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, called in a speech Friday for people to "work day and night" to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, saying it is Hezbollah's "primary goal."
Nasrallah said the powerful Iran-backed Lebanese paramilitary group's secondary goal is for Hamas to emerge "victorious" in Gaza.
He also described the war as a "turning point."
"The victory of Gaza means a victory for Palestine, for Jerusalem, for Aqsa and the Holy Sepulcher and all the neighboring countries," Nasrallah said.
Warning of a new front: Nasrallah went on to say Hezbollah has been in an "unprecedented battle" with Israel on the Israel-Lebanon border since October 8, adding that "the possibility of the Lebanese front escalating into broad battle is a realistic option."
"Israel should take this into account," he said in his speech.
Some background: Hezbollah is an Iran-backed Islamist movement with one of the most powerful paramilitary forces in the Middle East. The group, which has its main base on the Israel-Lebanon border, could become a wildcard player in the Hamas-Israel war and spark a wider regional conflict.
Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in tit-for-tat skirmishes across the border in northern Israel and southern Lebanon since the war began. The Lebanese group has voiced support for Hamas' cause but not yet directly intervened on its behalf, linking its clashes with Israel to attacks on Lebanese soil.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that his government opposed any temporary ceasefire in Gaza unless Hamas freed all the hostages it holds.
He also said that it would continue to block fuel from entering Gaza.
Israel is objecting a temporary ceasefire which does not include freeing all our hostages, Netanyahu said during televised remarks on Friday. Israel does not allow fuel into the Gaza Strip and is objecting to funds being transferred into Gaza strip.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Tel Aviv on Friday said the US believes efforts to get humanitarian assistance in and hostages out would be facilitated by humanitarian pauses.
Blinken also said during the news conference that the US and Israel have "identified mechanisms" to get much-needed fuel to Gaza's hospitals.
The Israeli military on Friday said 241 hostages are believed to have been taken by Hamas on October 7.

Nearly half of Gaza's hospitals are out of service, Palestinian health ministry says
From CNNs Kareem El Damanhoury and Kareem Khadder
Sixteen out of 35 hospitals in Gaza are out of service due to bombardment and a fuel shortage, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah.
The Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, which is the leading cancer hospital in Gaza, is among hospitals that have stopped operating, the health ministry said in a statement Wednesday.
Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila, based in Ramallah, said on Wednesday that the lives of 70 cancer patients at the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital are seriously threatened, adding that the lives of about 2,000 other cancer patients are also under serious threat amid "catastrophic health conditions" due to the conflict.
Hospital director Sobhi Skaik told CNN on Monday that the center was damaged in an Israeli attack, with its third floor suffering a direct hit causing damage to oxygen and water supplies, though no one was injured. The Israeli military told CNN in a statement Tuesday: The IDF did not strike Gazas Turkish-Palestinian Friendship hospital. It did not offer any further information.
The Palestinian health ministry further warned that Gazas largest hospital could be out of service very soon.
Al Shifa Medical Complex will stop working in less than 24 hours due to running out of fuel, the ministry said, adding that the hospitals vicinity has been repeatedly hit by Israeli airstrikes.
The ministry called for Israeli attacks to stop, which it said would allow medical supplies and volunteer teams to enter, as well as wounded people to leave the strip for treatment.
Meanwhile, Israel has claimed that there is fuel in Gaza, but that it is under Hamas control.
Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told CNN last week that there is between 800,000 and perhaps more than one million liters of fuel of different types stored inside Gaza under Hamas control, according to Israeli military intelligence estimates. He said some of that fuel was stockpiled and accused the United Nations and Hamas of stealing some of it as well.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that a blast in the Falluja neighborhood of the Jabalya refugee camps was due to an airstrike Wednesday.
The IDF statement reads as follows:
"Earlier today, based on precise intelligence, IDF fighter jets struck a Hamas command and control complex in Jabaliya. We can confirm that Hamas terrorists were eliminated in the strike.
Hamas deliberately builds its terror infrastructure under, around and within civilian buildings, intentionally endangering Gazan civilians.
The IDF has been urging Gazans in this neighborhood to evacuate as part of its efforts to mitigate harm to civilians. The IDF continues to call on all residents of northern Gaza and Gaza City to evacuate southwards to a safer area."
An Israeli strike on the Jabalya refugee camp Tuesday left catastrophic damage and killed a large number of people, according to eyewitnesses and medics there. Israel says its strike targeted and killed a top Hamas commander, while Hamas strongly denied the presence of one of its leaders in the camp.

Massive blast hits Gaza refugee camp for a second day in a row
A massive blast has rocked the Gaza refugee camp of Jabalya, destroying several buildings, for a second day in a row.
Video from the blast site on Wednesday showed catastrophic damage surrounding a deep crater in the Jabalya neighborhood of Falluja. People are seen digging through the rubble searching for bodies.
CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for comment.
The Civil Defense in Hamas-run Gaza said many people died in the attack and large numbers remained under the rubble in what it described as a second massacre at the refugee camp.
The Israeli military conducted airstrikes in Jabalya on Tuesday in an area near Falluja. Medics said there were hundreds of casualties dead and wounded. Videos seen by CNN on Tuesday showed long lines of bodies outside the Indonesian hospital, the nearest medical facility to Jabalya camp.
The IDF said Tuesdays strikes targeted and killed Ibrahim Biari, whom it described as one of the Hamas commanders responsible for the October 7 attack on Israel, which left more than 1,400 people dead and hundreds taken hostage.

Hamas claims it will release some foreign hostages in the coming days
From CNN's Mohammed Tawfeeq
Hamas will free some foreign nationals they are holding hostage in the coming days, according to a Hamas military wing spokesperson.
"Some countries have intervened through mediators to free some foreign nationals' detainees in Gaza," Abu Obeida, a spokesperson for the Qassam Brigades, said in a video clip on Tuesday.
"We received the requests of these countries," he said without naming the countries. "Therefore, we informed the mediators that we will release a number of foreigners in the coming days," he added.
Obeida did not give further details on the nationalities and numbers of hostages Hamas claimed it will free.
Addressing the Israel Defense Forces' announcement that it had rescued a female IDF solider from Hamas captivity on Monday, the Hamas spokesperson said that none of the prisoners that the group is holding have been rescued and suggested that the solider could have been held prisoner by another group besides Hamas.

Turkish president calls for a new security mechanism for permanent peace between Israel and Hamas
From CNNs Hande Atay Alam
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said a path to permanent peace in Gaza must be made between Israel and Hamas, arguing that there is a need "to establish a new security mechanism in cooperation with the actors in the region," according to Turkish state media Anadolu.
"We stated that security cannot be achieved by shooting and dropping more bombs on Gaza; shedding more blood, killing more children, and destroying more hospitals, schools, mosques, churches, and marketplaces," Erdogan said, according to Anadolu. "We believe that Israel, which seems to have completely lost its state of mind and acts like an organization, must be stopped as soon as possible."
He said that if such a security mechanism was established, "Turkey is ready to take responsibility," Anadolu reported.
The country's top priority, he added, is "preventing the massacre, which is on its 25th day."
"Our aim is to get our region out of this whirlpool it has been dragged into," he said.
"The Israeli administration, backed by the unconditional support of Europe and America, has been committing crimes against humanity in front of the eyes of the whole world for exactly 25 days," Erdogan said.

Israel downplays intelligence ministry document that proposed relocating of millions of Gazans to Egypt
From CNN's Kyle Blaine and Kevin Flower
Israel's prime minister is downplaying a leaked intelligence ministry document that proposed the relocation of millions of Palestinians to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.
"This is a preliminary paper, like dozens of such papers prepared by all political and security echelons, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus office said in a statement. The day after is a topic that has not been discussed by official Israeli channels, which are now focused on dismantling Hamas' governing and military abilities."
The document is dated October 13 just days after the Hamas terror attack and was published on the website Sicha Mekomit. In it, the intelligence ministry lays out three options for dealing with civilians in Gaza after the Hamas attacks and the outbreak of war.
The papers authors concluded that Alternative C," which calls for relocating Gazas civilian population to the northern Sinai, would be best for Israels long-term security.
As part of the plan, tent cities would be constructed in the area, with more permanent cities being constructed at a later date. The plan also calls for a humanitarian corridor to aid the resettled population and a security perimeter to be created to prevent them from entering Israel.
The acknowledgment of the paper by the Israeli government will likely intensify suspicion amongst Arab nations in the region that Israel is deliberately trying to displace Palestinians permanently. Egypt and Jordan have warned that any plan to transfer Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank to their respective countries would escalate conflict in the region.

Israeli strike damages Gazas leading cancer hospital, hospital director says
From CNNs Kareem El Damanhoury, Gul Tuysuz, Ibrahim Dahman & Paul Murphy
An Israeli attack has damaged the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, Gazas leading cancer hospital, director Sobhi Skaik told CNN on Monday.
The building suffered a direct hit to the third floor, Skaik said, causing damage to oxygen and water supplies but no injuries to people inside.
A video circulating on social media and geolocated by CNN showed smoke emerging from the hospitals central building.
The most severe damage is the anxiety and panic that afflicts patients, Skaik said. Today, there were people who fled the hospital because of what they saw.
CNN has asked the Israeli military for comment.
The hospital, which is located just to the south of Gaza City, was funded by the Turkish government, which expressed its anger over the strike in a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
There is no explanation for such an attack, even though all necessary information, including the coordinates of the institution in question was shared with the Israeli authorities in advance, said officials in Ankara, Turkey's capital.
Director Skaik said 200 people worked at the hospital, treating thousands of patients from across the strip each year.
He said the international community needed to do more to protect those most in need.
CNN so far saying no deaths from it.

Netanyahu pushes back on criticism of civilian casualties in Gaza
From CNN's Kyle Blaine
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed back against the notion that Israel was inflicting collective punishment on the Palestinian people in its pursuit of Hamas, saying the group was preventing civilians from moving to the safe zone in southern Gaza.
Hamas is preventing them from leaving, keeping them in areas of conflict. So I think you should direct your questions to Hamas, Netanyahu told a reporter at a news conference Monday.
Netanyahu said Israel has been trying to prevent civilian casualties by calling for civilians in Gaza to move to a safe zone in the south and providing humanitarian support.
We have to do everything we can to minimize civilian causalities, but we cannot give up the fight, Netanyahu said, saying the future of his countries and other civilized countries depend on it.

The US is working to send a strong message of deterrence to Iran as concerns of a wider regional conflict escalate, the White House said Monday.
Were certainly going to act if we have to to continue to protect our troops and our facilities. We have proven that we will strike and act to do that. And that's a strong message that Iran needs to take away. We take those responsibilities seriously, said John Kirby, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications.
We also take our national security interest writ large in the region very seriously, which is why the president has now employed two aircraft carrier strike groups We've got to make sure we send a signal to all actors, not just Iran, but all actors, certainly Iran included, that we will take our national security interest very seriously. We will protect and defend our troops. And we'll do it at a time in a manner of our choosing, he told CNN.
Remember: Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi said Sunday that Israel has "crossed the red lines" and it "may force everyone to take action." There are concerns that Israel's fierce military campaign in Gaza will open up more fronts. There are already crossfire exchanges on northern Israel and southern Lebanon border separate from Israel's fighting with Hamas farther south, which is centered around Gaza. But an uptick in clashes with Hezbollah has raised fears that the powerful Lebanese paramilitary group could actively participate in the conflict. It comes as the US national security adviser warned of an "elevated risk" of the war expanding into a broader Middle East conflict.

Hamas releases new hostage video showing 3 women
From CNNs Eyad Kourdi, Lianne Kolirin, Amir Tal, Hadas Gold, Adam Levine, Stephanie Halasz and Richard Allen Greene
Hamas on Monday released a short video showing three women who are believed to be captives held by the Palestinian militant group since its terror attack on Israel on October 7.
The hostage video is only the second released by Hamas since more than 200 people were taken into Gaza. It appears as intended to undermine Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with pointed criticism over his leadership by the detained women.
The video shows them seated in plastic chairs facing the camera, while the woman in the middle addresses Netanyahu directly with increasing fury.
She makes reference to a press conference by families of the hostages yesterday, suggesting it was filmed on Monday.
The video comes just days after progress in hostage negotiations fell through, a fact referenced by the speaker who mentions a supposed ceasefire. Israeli leaders Friday dismissed talks of a breakthrough in talks as a rumor as they announced an expansion of the ground campaign.
The woman speaks fluently and does not appear to be reading from a script, but because the women are hostages, the statement could have been made under duress.
You promised to release us all, she says, suggesting she is aware of hostage negotiations. She finishes with a demand to free us all, screaming: Now! Now! Now!
Relatives of the hostages have named the women as Elena Trupanov, Danielle Alony and Ramon Kirsht. Aloni is the speaker.
The women do not show visible signs of physical mistreatment, but CNN is unable to verify anything about their circumstances or well-being.
Netanyahus office confirmed the names in a brief statement, addressing the women, "who were kidnapped by Hamas who commits war crimes."
"I hug you. Our hearts go out to you and the other abductees. We are doing everything to bring all the kidnapped and missing people home," the office statement read.
Israeli television channels 11 and 12 are showing a still from the video on air. Channel 13 is not, saying on air it is honoring a request from the relatives.

Situation becomes more dire for hundreds of foreign nationals stranded in Gaza
From CNN's Alex Marquardt, Jennifer Hansler and Yahya Abou-Ghazala
More than two weeks of intense negotiations to evacuate foreign nationals out of Gaza have yielded few signs of progress, leaving hundreds of desperate civilians stranded inside the war-torn strip of land as Israeli ground operations expanded amid a barrage of airstrikes on Friday.
Multiple sources involved in the diplomatic talks tell CNN that the effort to open a key border crossing in southern Gaza remains stymied by Hamas control of the enclave, Israels blockade and bombing, as well as Egyptian security concerns.
Now that the Israeli defense forces have announced an expansion of their ground operations, the situation for civilians and foreign nationals who remain trapped in Gaza has become even more dire. Aid officials and other individuals on the ground had expressed fears even before the expansion of operations that nowhere in Gaza was safe, and despite US officials saying they were working with Israel to establish civilian safe zones, such areas have not been fully stood up.
People who have family in Gaza told CNN on Friday they have not been able to make contact with them after communications went down in the strip amid the barrage of strikes.
Negotiators have been furiously working to find a solution to appease Egypts concerns about refugees entering the country through the Rafah crossing in southwestern Gaza, the border between Egypt and the Sinai. Complicating things are Israeli and American claims that Hamas has blocked the way out, as well as the inherent difficulties that come with processing thousands of people who claim to be foreign nationals.
The US had also been rushing to negotiate the release of hostages held by Hamas ahead of the incursion, talks that the US government insisted will continue amid Fridays intensified airstrikes.
The Biden administration said Thursday it was hopeful that a deal will be reached in the coming days to allow US citizens to evacuate Gaza through Egypt, though the State Department had previously issued an alert saying the crossing into Egypt would open but it never did.

Hamas official appeals in AP interview for "stronger intervention" against Israel by regional allies
From CNN's Ruba Alhenawi
A senior Hamas official said Thursday that Hezbollah and other allies were expected to play a bigger role in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Ghazi Hamad told the Associated Press in an exclusive interview from Beirut that Hezbollah now is working against the occupation, adding, We appreciate this. But we need more in order to stop the aggression on Gaza We expect more.
Hezbollahs leader, Hassan Nasrallah, met with top officials from Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad on Wednesday, the Lebanese group said. Hezbollah's press office also released a handwritten letter by Nasrallah his first statement since the start of the war commending those who have died fighting Israel.
In his interview, Hamad denied any involvement from Iran or Hezbollah in the planning of the October 7 attack.
"The decision was taken by Hamas only, and we took the responsibility (for it), he said.
Initial US intelligence also suggested that Iranian officials were surprised by Hamas attack, casting doubt on the idea that Tehran was directly involved in its planning, resourcing or approval, CNN reported.
Earlier Friday, Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem met with a delegation from the Iranian parliament. Qassem warned that the Americans and Israelis do not know what the coming days will hold for them should the aggression continue.
Hamad told the AP that the initial international condemnation of the October 7 attack that killed Israeli civilians gave Israel license to kill civilians in Gaza in response.
Amid growing pressure to secure the release of hundreds of more hostages, Hamad reiterated that Hamas is "very open" to discuss the release of more.
Hamad did not make any apologies regarding the high number ofcivilian deaths in Israel or the rising death toll in Gaza, according to the Associated Press.

Conflict may widen.

In what appears to be a significant attempt to prepare public opinion ahead of a major ground offensive inside Gaza, the Israeli army has accused the Strips largest hospital, Al Shifa, of being the site of a major Hamas command and control center.
Army spokesperson Daniel Hagari accused Hamas of directing rocket attacks and commanding Hamas operations from bunkers underneath the hospital building, which he said was linked to the network of tunnels that Hamas has dug underneath Gaza City.
He claimed other hospitals inside Gaza were also being used by Hamas in similar ways during a media presentation that included aerial photos, graphics and voice recordings,
"When medical facilities are used for terror purposes, they are liable to lose their protection from attack in accordance with international law," Hagari said, appearing to suggest such hospitals were now firmly and publicly on Israels target list.
The army would "continue making efforts to minimize harm to the civilian population," he added.
Hagari offered only one piece of evidence at the presentation: a phone call purporting to be between two Gazans discussing the presence of Hamas headquarters at the hospital.
He said Israel had more evidence that he could not yet make public, but which had been shared with what he called the intelligence community, which had accepted Israels allegations, he said.
Palestinians rejected the Israeli army claim.
The Director General of the Gaza Health Ministry, Dr. Medhat Abbas, told CNNs Eleni Giokos that Gazas hospitals, "are used to treat patients only" and are not being used "to hide anyone."
Hamas also rejected the claim, calling on the United Nations, Arab and Islamic countries to immediately intervene to stop the madness of bombing and destroying the medical system."
Mustafa Barghouti of the Palestine National Initiative based in Ramallah said Israel was lying.
They keep lying to justify criminal acts against a civilian population, now they want to justify attacking people in a hospital he told Sky News.
And Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian physician who has worked at the hospital on several occasions, including during three periods of open hostilities between Hamas and Israel, called the allegations old.
We heard these unsubstantiated claims during the 2009 and 2014 attacks. We have never seen any single sign or proof, weve had zero restrictions on filming and photographing in Shifa, and have never been controlled in any ways, he told CNN.
Hagari, the Army spokesperson, also addressed the issue of fuel stocks, which Israel says Hamas continues to divert from civilian purposes towards powering its military campaign.
Hagari played a voice recording which he said was a conversation between an Israeli army officer and a "senior Gazan energy official" in which the purported energy official says that Hamas has "at least a million liters" of diesel, and that some its fuel is being used to provide ventilation and lighting in tunnels.
On Thursday, a World Health Organization spokesperson told CNN that more than one-third of hospitals in Gaza and nearly two-thirds of primary health care clinics have shut down due to damage from hostilities or lack of fuel.

The United Nations approved a resolution that called for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas on Friday in the face of strident objection from the US and Israel.
A resolution was introduced by Jordan and passed the General Assembly overwhelmingly, with 120 countries voting in favor of the resolution, 14 against and 45 abstained. Applause broke out in the assembly hall when the positive vote count was displayed.
The resolution calls for an "immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities," as well as "immediate, full, sustained, safe and unhindered humanitarian access." It also asks Israel to rescind its recommendation to evacuate northern Gaza.
The resolution urges "the immediate and unconditional release of all civilians who are being illegally held captive," but does not name Hamas as the captor.
The US and Israel had denounced the motion, arguing that it did not include explicit criticism of Hamas. In debate around the resolution on Thursday, Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan said calls for a ceasefire were not an attempt for peace but an attempt to tie Israels hands, preventing us from eliminating a huge threat to our citizens.
Earlier Friday, an amendment introduced by the Canadians and backed by the United States to include harsh language about Hamas in the resolution was rejected by the General Assembly.
The vote comes as the Israel Defense Forces announced earlier Friday it is "expanding ground operations" in the Gaza Strip and "operating forcefully" on all fronts to fulfill its goals in the war with Hamas.

UN members are preparing to vote on a resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the war between Israel and Hamas so that humanitarian aid can reach civilians in the battered enclave of Gaza. The vote is expected at 3 p.m. ET.
Key Arab states, including Egypt, endorsed the resolution. The United States, siding with Israel, sharply criticized the effort, calling the resolution deeply flawed.
Jordan brought the resolution to the General Assembly after successive attempts to call for ceasefires and humanitarian pauses failed in the more powerful Security Council. A general assembly vote is politically significant but not binding.
The draft resolution calls for an "immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities," as well as "immediate, full, sustained, safe and unhindered humanitarian access."
The resolution also calls for "the immediate and unconditional release of all civilians who are being illegally held captive" but does not name Hamas as the captor.
Israel's position: In debate Thursday, Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan called the resolution completely devoid of any content related to the situation, saying calls for a ceasefire were not an attempt for peace, but an attempt to tie Israels hands, preventing us from eliminating a huge threat to our citizens.
Palestinian observer's position: Ambassador Riyad Mansour, head of the Palestinian Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations, highlighted the climbing death toll among Palestinian civilians, asking the assembly, Is this the war some of you are defending?
There is no explicit criticism of Hamas in the General Assembly resolution currently under debate. Hamas, which controls Gaza, sparked the latest outbreak in violence after its October 7 terror attacks in Israel that left more than 1,400 dead.
These are omissions of evil and they give cover to and they empower Hamass brutality, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, said Friday. No member state should allow that to happen.
Canada has offered a last-minute amendment which sharply denounces the militant group.
A majority of at least two-thirds of member countries present in the General Assembly Hall would need to vote yes for the resolution to pass.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Not having a unified Gaza and West Bank and one run by terrorists keeps the two state solution in the background. With that no borders can be drawn and Israel gets to keep adding settlements in the West Bank which have never stopped.

And continue to hold their water and electricity hostage. They have military presence located on most Gazan land borders.

They only "left" because the point was to imprison them.
Demographic concerns, the maintenance of a Jewish majority in Israeli-controlled areas, played a significant role in the development of the policy.[18][19][20]
The rationale for the disengagement has been partly attributed to Arnon Soffers campaign regarding "the danger the Palestinian womb posed to Israeli democracy."[21] Sharon mentioned the demographic rationale in a public address on August 15, 2005, the day of the disengagement, as follows: "It is no secret that, like many others, I had believed and hoped we could forever hold onto Netzarim and Kfar Darom. But the changing reality in the country, in the region, and the world, required of me a reassessment and change of positions. We cannot hold on to Gaza forever. More than a million Palestinians live there and double their number with each generation."[22][23] At the same time, Shimon Peres, then Vice Prime Minister, stated in an interview that: We are disengaging from Gaza because of demography.[23]

Israel left because they knew they couldn't hold it. They also didn't like the alternative of making Gaza citizens of Israel. I believe South Africa was referenced where the originally oppressed population was able to gain head of government, ie Mandela. The blockade is a big human rights violation where Gaza was left stateless and under Israel's thumb.
