You sure you're not so focused on the outliers and the media scandalfest that you can't even see the everyday successes? Get them to change, they get others to change. It sometimes takes generations, which takes time. And a welcoming society that feels worth becoming a part of, not one yelling ultimatums at you that start with "you're not one of us unless..." while you're still getting off the plane.

You'd be surprised how many families that are as [nationality] as [symbol of nation] are only one or two generations removed from stubborn settlers who refused to integrate with their new home. Chances are, many of the people in favour of this law will count among them.

You'd be surprised how well sitting back and doing nothing can work in regards to integration, if you're patient enough to let it happen instead of insisting on a half-assed quick-fix.

The problem is, to truly integrate, the base culture has to be willing to absorb parts of the new culture into itself too, and doesn't even have to do it in even close to equal measure. It strikes me that this is the elephant in the room. One side expects the other to do all the compromising. How often does this ever work without fostering resentment?

This just seems like cutting off your own nose to spite somebody else's face.

I'm guessing in many cases, it's not so much taking ethnic foods and improving them as it is taking standard but underused foods and slapping a nationality or ethnicity in the name because they contain a few common elements.
