Nah, that's bad parenting. Teens can be stupid, yes, but even stupid teens with good parents understand basic cause and effect and that you shouldn't do things that present an immediate risk to the lives of others. A parent that hasn't managed to teach their kid that by the time they can even pick up a rock like this has failed as a parent.

Let's be honest here: CoD is a children's game. The primary demographic is not mature adults, whatever the rating might say.

So blame the parents, it's their choice to get it for the kids.

Little of that, little of game store employees just not caring about M ratings, the bottom line is that kids are still a major chunk of the game's demographic, and Activision knows that (and integrates that into their marketing). Throwing this kind of content in for no particular reason is kind of questionable when you take that into account, but then this kind of content is always kind of questionable when there's no particular reason for it.

There is rape in all other forms of media, why is there being rape in a video game any different?

The interactive element is a pretty major reason to raise eyebrows, if it's the player doing the raping. The same thing's been said about violence, but at least with violence you've got a fun action element going on. With an interactive rape scene, the only way anyone's going to be getting enjoyment out of it is if they enjoy the idea of raping somebody, since you aren't really going to be able to attach any sort of gameplay to it that couldn't be done any other way. That's definitely not a good thing, so keeping that stuff away from minors makes sense.

When the player isn't doing the raping, though, it is indeed no different. I fully expect that, in the case of CoD, it's just being thrown in for shock value and to generate buzz for the game, rather than for any particularly deep or thought-provoking story reasons, but criticizing directors for using sexual violence for easy shock value is something that applies equally to any medium.

Depends just how much it gets used. SMW's a particularly egregious example, where as soon as I noticed I was kind of annoyed by how overwhelmingly derivative the soundtrack was, even though it was still pleasant to listen to. If it just comes back from time to time to tie together common thematic elements, though, I could see that being fun (not that I can think of any particular examples of that on a whole-game scale).

I guess it's kind of like a common theme in a symphony. When it appears in a few different contexts and is used to tie everything together, that's fun. When it's just repeated over and over again with mild variation (see: Bolero), you've gotta do something to keep things interesting, otherwise it's just awful (see: any performance of Bolero that is even a little bit sub-awesome).

Pretty much. Even though they're doing so for the entertainment of others, streamers still want to be able to enjoy their own games, and part of that enjoyment is the struggle of figuring things out for themselves. If you're going to ruin that for them by telling them how to play because you don't want to watch them struggle, you probably shouldn't be watching people play games that you already know how to play.

Singing is so fundamentally different from speaking that accents rarely persist. You can get characteristics of your native language coming through in singing (Italian, for example, is a very bright language with lots of resonance toward the front of the mouth, which is good for classical singing and something that people who normally speak a darker language like English or German have to learn), but when you start elongating vowels the way one does when singing, that tends to keep accents from coming through.

Though, if anything, good technique calls for other English-speakers to sound more British, since harder R's are a terrible sound to try to sing through. That's less emphasized in pop music, because nothing about good singing technique is typically emphasized in pop music, but if you start doing any classical singing and you try to pronounce "heart" like a North American would, you're going to have a rough time.

It's generally a pretty big problem with society. People have a lot of difficulty grasping the concept that different people react to stuff differently. What traumatises one person for life may only be momentarily upsetting to another, and pretty much everyone could stand to do a better job of realizing that they can't always generalize how they'd react.

And part of those consultations is trying out new expressions of gender identity. If the therapy's being done right, the actual surgery won't happen until they're comfortable in the target sex. If you're concerned that the surgery is coming before your uncle is comfortably settled in a new identity, raise your concerns with the therapist. They may be missing out on that information (most of what they hear will be self-reported by your uncle, which isn't always a reliable source of diagnostic information), or they may be able to explain the therapy such that you have a better understanding of it and your concerns are assuaged.

And is that based on talking to him and his therapist to gain a clearer understanding of his particular case and the treatment approach they're taking, or is that just you saying "this is weird and I don't like it"? Like any medical issue, you can't generalize treatment approaches that broadly, especially not from a single example. Surgery didn't save my dad's life when he had a stroke, does that mean I firmly believe in not wasting resources operating on people with hemorrhagic strokes? Of course not, because I understand why it failed in this particular case and that other, different cases may still benefit.

Similarly, "toxic masculinity" narrows down the subject to the elements of masculinity that are toxic, and does not mean "all masculinity is toxic." Of that remaining 0.1%, which is still quite a lot of DNA given that it accounts for all the variation between all humans. By the nature of sexual reproduction, half of your genes come from each parent, so parents and full siblings are 50% genetically similar. Each step out you take reduces that by a further half, so by the time you get to second cousins, you're at 3.125%.

The two scenarios are entirely different because the basic service is already illegal. It's a pretty huge leap from limiting a legally provided service.

And yet the logic is identical. Killing people is illegal. Discriminating against people on the basis of certain protected classes is illegal. They're very different degrees of illegal, obviously, but the bottom line is that claiming religious reasons for doing something illegal doesn't make it any more legal.

Zeus posted...
However, I seriously doubt that.

Now who's being bigoted? I am a practicing Presbyterian. There's a good chance I go to church more often than these poor pious bakers do, whatever you'd like to assume about me.

At any rate, your argument overlooks that you're creating an OPPRESSED class by forcing people to act contrary to their deeply held religious beliefs over a trivial matter.

Discrimination is not a trivial matter, and not being allowed to deprive somebody of food because they like it in the butt is not being oppressed. Calm down.

Zeus posted...
Then they travel further. So what? Do you expect everything to be handed to you at your door? People have to travel and move for all sorts of reasons already. Maybe you can also force businesses, schools, etc, to move to different regions to accommodate handfuls of people who refuse to move.

Again, there's a major, major distinction between disadvantages that exist out of necessity and disadvantages that exist because somebody's being a prick. Not every community will have enough people to make it practical to have every service provided within that community. That's simply the practical reality of the matter, and that means people will sometimes have to travel to reach the nearest provider of that service. There's no necessity involved in denying people services because they're gay. A Christian is completely capable of making them that cake, or selling them groceries, or renting that apartment. They just choose not to.

Zeus posted...
You claim it's irrelevant but the reality is that your fantasy scenario has never once come close to playing out like that.

I find it pretty hilarious that you said this immediately after using a textbook slippery slope argument, as though a slippery slope can't also be applied here. No, there's no precedent for a major multinational corporation putting principle ahead of profit. Yet. If discrimination becomes normalized enough (as it will if not fought against), and the discriminated class is small enough (unlikely with gays, but you could certainly see it with trans people and some ethnic minorities), you're absolutely going to see this sort of thing happening with larger companies, because the impact to profit will be small enough to justify the principled action.

Incidentally, slippery slope arguments have no inherent logical validity, so you might want to flesh out yours if you want it to not be completely worthless. Just FYI.

Christians shouldn't be deprived of their right to choose what their business can and can't do.

Sure they should. Otherwise, organizations of Christian assassins would be legal. Laws dictate what people can't do to other people; owning a business or being part of a religion doesn't absolve anyone from following them.

it's already been decided that it's inhumane to force people to change their beliefs against their will,

Forcing them to change their beliefs? That is indeed not okay. Intervening to prevent their beliefs from having a harmful effect on society? That's literally what law enforcement is. Someone who believes your TV should be his is legally prohibited from stealing it, and will be prevented from or punished for doing so as much as the law is able to stop him. Somebody who believes your car would look better with a rainbow unicorn painted on it is legally prohibited from vandalizing it, and will be prevented from or punished for doing so. And somebody who believes gay people shouldn't have cake is legally prohibited from denying them service for that belief.

It's all quite consistent, despite your efforts to portray this as some inalienable principle that must not be violated.

We are all disadvantaged by our circumstances, it's not necessarily fair but it's not unreasonable either.

It is unreasonable, however, to introduce new disadvantages. Some are inevitable, but that inevitability does not in any way justify making new ones where there don't have to be anyone, and anyone who does try to introduce new ones should be frowned upon.

Why would you want a Christian baker that doesn't respect your lifestyle to make your cake in the first place?

Presumably because they make good cake. But apparently it's weird that I don't particularly consider factors that aren't relevant to conducting business when conducting business.

Not explicitly. The actual quote is "It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design," which in industry-speak means "we don't want to invest money into a game that players will finish and move on from instead of playing indefinitely and feeding us sweet sweet microtransaction and DLC revenue."

I don't know how to be. I know that I'm grateful to you guys, and to my friends and family... but I can't connect to it. It's as if I'm being e-mailed my feelings, as if there was a middle man between myself and my brain. There is a messenger saying "you love these people" and it makes sense to me in theory, but it's not something I'm actually experiencing in my heart. As if I was controlling myself in 3rd person like The Sims or Max Payne and I had to select "give friend hug" on a menu and watch myself do it emotionlessly, despite knowing the "character I was controlling" did in fact, love the person they were hugging.

That's shock, mostly. You're disconnecting because being connected is too painful. That will pass, though when you do connect again, it's going to really hurt. Keep people around you and keep e-mailing yourself that you love these people, because you're going to need that reminder of all the good things that do exist in your life.

Both, really. If it had mod support, I'd be inclined to grab the Switch version simply because portable Minecraft would be fun. I find Vanilla too boring these days, though, so lacking mod support is a dealbreaker for me.

Being friendzoned is the worst thing to exist

Unless you actually value that friendship and aren't just agreeing to be friends out of a desperately obsessive need to keep her around while you wallow in self-pity every time a conversations ends without her falling in love with you. Then being friendzoned isn't really a problem, because you end up with a friend and that's fun.

Wow. I am so sorry for your loss.

Please attend therapy. You have experienced a serious trauma that will not be difficult to heal from, but it can be possible. Be patient with yourself. Seek support from the people around you who love you--remember that they only wish to help you in the best ways, so let them know what those ways may be. Everyone grieves differently and perhaps your therapist can help you explore healthy ways of doing so.

Best wishes as you recover.

I'll second that. It's going to be a while before you see a point to the therapy, and it's going to hurt for a long time, but it will help eventually. If nothing else, she wouldn't want you to give up so quickly. Good luck, dude.

It depends on what Im cooking.

Basically. Olive oil or butter when their flavours are suitable, canola when I want a more neutral flavour and/or a higher smoke point. Sometimes bacon fat when it's feasible and the flavour fits, but I don't keep any around, so that's only ever when I've just made bacon.

If a need isn't being met, businesses will either spring up to meet it or other businesses -- recognizing that they can get a large amount of profit -- will step in.

There's a large amount of profit from being the only bakery in town that will bake cakes for 10% of its population's weddings? In a city with a million people, maybe, but a town of 5000? Good luck with that. Good luck with that even if you're talking about a more everyday service. And that's even without getting into the fact that homosexuality's incidence is probably going to be less than the usual 10% in such a small town (both because smaller towns tend to be more homophobic to start with and because only having ~24 potential romantic partners to pick from isn't exactly conducive to settling down there).

Remember that the total number of businesses in America isn't relevant here. America's a big place, so of course there'll be a huge number of businesses. America's communities, however, are not necessarily big places, and it's communities that people exist in. The fact that there are 146 (not a real number) bakeries that will serve gay people in Manhattan means nothing to a gay couple in Jasper, AK, and as soon as you start discriminating such that gay people (or black people, or Muslims, or anyone that doesn't look Aryan) have to drive 2-3 communities over to get what they want, you are creating a disadvantaged class with that discrimination, and that's no bueno.

Zeus posted...
In general, I could understand an argument mandating *essential* services, but most essential services -- hospitals, utilities, etc -- are covered by the government anyway which can't discriminate. Likewise, major chains cover the majority of needs in this country so the most important areas are already covered.

Major chains are also businesses, and you started this line of reasoning with "Any business owner." No cherry-picking now. Additionally, most essential services aren't covered by the government in the US. Hospitals are treated as private businesses. Utilities are private businesses. Real estate (including renting) is a private business. Grocery stores are private businesses. Drug stores are private businesses. And in smaller communities, many of those services aren't going to have more than one option available, because there simply isn't enough business to support more than one.

Zeus posted...
Otherwise, the idea that nobody should be "deprived of anything" is fundamentally an issue of entitlement. As it stands, countless people of "deprived of things" due to a myriad of factors including income, availability, etc. So, unless you pass a law mandating that things should be free and businesses have to open in certain areas, there will always be some "deprivation"

There will, and that's a problem, but that's due to factors beyond anyone's easy control. You can't sell a product to people that can't afford it without yourself being unable to afford staying in business. Depriving people of a service due to voluntary discrimination, however, is very easy to fix: Just stop discriminating against them. This is entirely a voluntary decision on the part of the business owner.

Zeus posted...
Why not ask whether it's really so hard not to be an a****** who forces a business to do something against their will instead of walking around the corner and buying somewhere else?

Because it's easier to stop being a bigoted asshole than it is to walk around the corner. Even in cases where there actually is something around the corner (which, as we've established already, is only really true in larger communities). Just don't. It's really that simple.
