if the estate were $5m and property taxes are 3%, that would mean that money would run out in 66 years if nothing else was spent and property taxes didn't increase

combine that with the cost of maintenance and whatever personal necessities and it would run out sooner, unless some very intelligent investing was done in the meantime, and even then the property taxes and upkeep would likely catch up

never mind the fact that spending the rest of ones life in one place would be dull as hell

At a glance, perhaps, but there's more to it.

The concept of the "alternative right" dates back to the 1960s when Buckley / The National Review effectively purged anyone deemed "fringe" from mainstream Conservative discourse. In particular this included the Birchers (Radical Anticommunists) and Objectivists (Libertarians). The purge also included Radical Patriot types and of course White Supremacists, but they had very little credibility or hope of social acceptance outside rural areas or the deep south, respectively.

Since then, an entire ecosystem of conservative/right-wing thought has emerged outside of the establishment conservative overton window, and the label became an umbrella term for all of it. The label eventually became adopted by both the Breitbart coalition on one hand, and the likes of Spencer on the other, the latter claiming to have coined it though this is not the case.

In 2016 Clinton invoked the label, after which these two camps really began to embrace it, but also butt heads with each other over who had the legitimate claim to its colloquial use.

tl;dr So basically, there is a formal definition and a colloquial definition, and while I believe the formal one is valid and constant, the colloquial one has changed and those who do not want to be associated with the colloquial usage have distanced themselves from those who do.

The only reason these fools don't call themselves "alt-right" anymore was because of Charlottesville. Same reason why a lot of them pretend to never have associated with or been close to those involved in the planning and running of the Unite the Right event. It's transparent as f***.

Cernovich (the event's organizer) has been in staunch opposition to the likes of Richard Spencer since well before Charlottesville. In months prior, he had been invited to speak at a free speech rally in DC, but after learning Spencer had been invited, dropped out and organized a counter-protest (see: for people that aren't white nationalists).

Albeit hearsay, he's also persuaded Molyneux and other new media personalities not to give Spencer and other white supremacists a platform, which is why Spencer's only propped up by small sympathetic white nationalist media outlets and the MSM.

There was an extensive firestorm among the far-right online over the "Alt-Right" label shortly after the election came to an end, and the white supremacist wing effectively drove everyone that wasn't one away and claimed the label for themselves. Alas, everyone on the far right with their head screwed on properly disassociated themselves from the label.

It's important to note that the definition of the term Alt-Right has changed over the past couple years (from anti-establishment conservatism back in '15 to white nationalism in late '16 / early '17), and in contemporary usage, the party was not Alt-Right, nor was it Fascist but that's clearly trolling.

"New Right," "Trumpist", or the pejorative "Alt-Lite" are more appropriate terms.

What's interesting is that a lot of the like are big supporters and fans of Manning for her role in revealing the excesses of the Iraq War and perhaps even bringing it to an end faster, since they're generally non-interventionists.

CRISPR's also a contender for the biggest invention since the internet, but smartphones aren't all that revolutionary - they're just a logical continuation of the ongoing portability and democratization of computing and communications.

There were several precursors (namely Blackberry and Treo) and the only thing Apple really did was stimulate consumer demand, though I'll give it and Google credit for doing more to foster an ecosystem for developing and distributing third-party applications for them, something that previously perhaps hadn't been seen outside of Linux projects.
