I don't actually think this is true. Like, I don't even really disagree with your overall point, but I think the majority of picture taking is for one's own benefit and enjoyment and sharing it is just a way of socializing. There are definitely people who basically make Instagram their "job" but it's a minority.

For all the talk about how selfies are a modern invention, people who could afford it used to pay artists to paint portraits of them and then displayed those portraits prominently. Same shit, different century. And it's not like no one ever took pictures of food, concerts, and themselves with a film camera, put them in a family album, and showed the album off to their friends and family. It's just easier and simpler to share now.

Interesting idea that came to me during an SSC discussion.

Part of the reason that platonic, mutually beneficial friendships between men and women are virtually impossible is because men won't put up with it. Not the lonely nerds who will do anything for attention, they will. But the Chads won't put up with it. They don't want their girlfriends having some legitimate meaningful friendship with another guy they don't know or aren't friends with themselves. Nor should they, because they understand the male mind well enough to know that he isn't harmless, and that ultimately he wants in her pants.
