Just imagine being someone in Hawaii... you get alerted that a nuclear attack on your state is imminent and inbound.

I honestly can't even imagine how that must feel, calling family, telling children that it's gonna be okay when you know it's not going to be, knowing you're most likely going to die in moments.

This is a really serious fuck up and the fact that people can joke about it so freely kinda bugs me.

It was a weird morning for me. I was having a dream where, oddly enough, I died, and was woken up by that noise from my phone. My first thought: "Fuck, flash flood warning when I have to go out to Magic Island today". But then I noticed it wasn't raining at all...And I look at my phone D:

After I let it sink in for a minute, I just randomly assumed North Korea was behind it, and figured that they wouldn't be any real threat, so I went back to sleep :<

That's typically how language tends to work. Not just with foreign words.

Well see, that's what I'm against. If people commonly say something incorrectly, does the fact that it's common make it correct? Like when people say "alright" rather than "all right"?

Excellent comparison! Except for the fact that no-one is the boss of a language. Joe is the owner of his name and has the authority to decide the correct pronunciation. A language doesn't work like that, so you'll need a better analogy.

As I've said, things in Japanese are only pronounced one way. Joe, in this example is only pronounced one way. To say either of them any other way would be objectively wrong.

Yeah, but karaoke, smorgasbord, schadenfreude, restaurant etc are words in English, too. And in English, they don't have to be pronounced the same way as in the original language.

Of course they don't have to be, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a correct way to say them. Here's the proper way

On the other hand, I shall leave you with this

https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-origin-of-Mount-Everests-name

A link that doesn't back up your claims. Thanks for that.

And are you really going to deny post #41? You said that all the people mispronouncing the name would be correct.

They aren't mispronouncing if they are correct.

That means that a parent isn't able to name their kid something if it's out of the ordinary and will be mispronounced, or else the incorrect version will be correct.

Or the word could have multiple pronunciations.

First, I have refuted your false claims, and even presented evidence which you seem to ignore. Stuff such as the link, which states:

"Although commonly pronounced as ever-est, the correct pronunciation of Sir Georges surname is actually eve-rest, with emphasis on the first syllable."

"Incidentally, Colonel Sir Georges surname was actually pronounced EVE-rest (not EVER-rest)."

And like I said in my name example, the parent wanted Joe to be pronounced Joey. But you said that since everyone else pronounced it incorrectly as Joe, then that would somehow make it correct.

In other words normal.

It's like when people pronounce karaoke as "carry-oh-key" or Mount Everest as "ever-est". It's said that way so much that it's considered normal, but it's still completely wrong.

Wait what I had no idea either of those were wrong

Yeah, since karaoke is Japanese, it's pronounced "ka-ra-oh-ke", regardless of what language it's being used in. Mount Everest is literally named after a guy, so that's why its pronounced that way.

Don't listen to the guy who thinks that parents aren't able to name their kids what they want.

how is he wrong?

A majority can be incorrect. If a parent names their child Joe but wants it pronounced "Joey", then literally every single person who pronounces his name as "Joe" will be wrong, even though that's the common method of saying that name.

And tri, I don't know what to say. I've lived here 29 years, my parents 60-something, but we speak proper English. I hope this doesn't sound stuck up or anything, but Pidgin is more of a gutter language to us I guess.

I also don't really know what that has to do with the pronunciation issue though. Japanese people tend to know how to pronounce Japanese words, especially those from Japan. They would know that "carry-oh-key" or "ka-muh-ka-zee" are incorrect, although they might still say it like that to fit in. Also "proper" Japanese, is the correct way. Even if some people have forgotten it or have chosen to abandon it, that doesn't make it wrong.

We have grammatical rules, you know. Stuff that they teach you in English in school.

And karaoke and Everest aren't even debatable; pronouncing them as I previously stated is just flat out wrong as they have set pronunciations. In Japanese, letters are always pronounced one way. "Ka" will always be pronounced like the "ca" in car, not like in "carry". Just because most people are too ignorant or lazy to say them correctly doesn't make the mispronunciation correct.

It's funny because Japanese immigrants were large contributors to Hawaiian Pidgen.

You might as well go to Japan and yell at Osakans for butchering "proper Japanese".

Actually Pidgin was mostly influenced by the native Hawaiians, which is why a great majority of the people with horrible grammar and syntax here are pacific islanders, either local Hawaiians, or Tongan, Samoan, Marshallese, etc. You rarely see Asians here who speak Pidgin; they speak just normal English or have an accent of their homeland.

Words like sushi, samurai, karaoke are English words of Japanese origin and that's how they're pronounced in English.

edit: and unless you're japanese you're still probably pronouncing it incorrectly

I'm full Japanese and I pronounce those words correctly. How would people mispronounce sushi though? I would think some of the top mispronounced Japanese words would be kamikaze, karaoke, ninja, samurai, and I guess anything with an R, since people would probably use the "English" R.

How do you think those grammer rules are created?

It doesn't matter when they were created; what matters is that they're set in stone until an official change comes about. You can't just say "This is common, so it's automatically correct".

JE19426 posted...
You might have a point if people are speaking Japanese when they say karaoke. If they are speaking English you most certainly don't.

English has more leniency because letters can be pronounced differently, but Everest is pronounced "eve-rest". Even though 99% of the world might pronounce it "ever-est", that doesn't change the fact that it was named after George Everest, whose name was pronounced "eve-rest".
