I qualified for reduced or free lunch mostly up until high school. And if I remember it being explained to me right, no matter if you ate or not, the food has to be used for the school to continue to get funding to compensate the reduced/free lunch. Otherwise they'd have to charge everyone full price or they'd not get a much at all. That was the 80's mostly though so it may be different. And maybe different state to state.

Ah, this was during the 90's. Although I wouldn't be surprised if the government here had something to do with it more than the time period. Hawaii isn't exactly the best in that department. We're one of the states to miss out on Cryptocurrency, and the legislature is petty as fuck. My dad's friend has been a representative for ages now, and he used to have an office in the state capital with a balcony. But then they decided to move him to an office a few doors down that's smaller with no balcony.

I mean the school was great since it was next to a huge park so we had P.E. in the nice gym there, and there were baseball fields and shit, but yeah, forcing kids to buy crappy food was lame :<

At least from middle school on we could choose what to do with our lunch break.
