I mean, SpikeVegeta definitely has charisma on top of charisma, yet he was one of the people on the couch doing what you said.

I did end up saying I liked a lot of the content he gave. It's just something about his personality that clashes with me in a serious way. I have no trouble seeing why he's popular, and he's definitely top 20% as far as commentary. I just personally don't like him.

We're talking about human behavior so there's an incredible amount of subjectivity to it.

Actually, Spike doesn't really portray the negative things I was talking about. He has a very good feel for the audience's perspective and doesn't speak out of turn too often. Nothing compared to the runners who you can clearly tell that being on the couch is the most public spotlight they've ever had. (And there's nothing wrong with that being their peak. I'm just saying spike clearly has stage presence which many couch people lack.)

I like it best when either there's nobody on the couch and the runner does good commentary, or there is one designated person on the couch who does most of the talking.

For the bigger games with more runners, the couch hive mind weirds me out sometimes. I'm mainly thinking of the super Mario sunshine run. It's cool how people can bond so much through running the same game, but sometimes it's just a little unsettling.

I think when there are too many people on the couch they end up just talking for each other instead of for the audience.

Well said, and I agree. I also think there's some effect where since people have spent so much time running the game, they naturally want to talk about it. That's true of any hobby. But many of the couch people lack the awareness to recognize that they aren't the one being showcased. And they just can't keep themselves from talking about the parts of the game they like.

Yeah they'll say something like "oh we've got the jetpack skip coming up. I think Robert found that skip right?"

"yeah shout out to robert for finding this skip! great member of our community"

...okay what is the fucking skip?

Yep. The people who are going to rise to the top as the culture continues to grow are the ones who have the charisma on top of the speedrunning skills.

Does anyone else feel like the Georgia receiver blatantly stepped out of bounds on that 80 yard TD?

Like, blatantly. There's a clete and a white area on the ground and they overlap.

Edit: OK, not blatantly when you watch it live. But when paused on instant replay it's "clear and obvious" if you ask me.

Like I said I've only seen the one, but I'm inclined to think I'd prefer 4 over 2. I get that it's easier to follow, but I'd prefer to see more variety of paths and find out which one is best over just this vs that. Or like if one person makes a costly decision it seems like it could be effectively over much sooner than a 4-way.

I mean...if you prefer a 2-way race, can't you just pick 2 from a 4-way race to focus on and ignore the others? >_>

So often I tell people my birthday, and they're like "Wow! So close to leap day!!" And then I explain that, no, in fact, since I was born at the end of February in an even year that wasn't a leap year, it's almost impossible to be born farther away from leap day.

I get why people go there, but it really amuses me how extremely wrong of a conclusion it is. Something like 99.99% of people are born closer to leap day than me.

Also, little known fact: leap year rules dictate that it's not just a multiple of 4. If the year is divisible by 100, it must also be divisible by 400 to be a leap year. So 2000 is a leap year. 1900, 2100, 2200, and 2300 are not.

Looking forward to Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga tomorrow.

Then pretty much the entirety of Saturday should be good. Really would like to catch Kirby Canvas Curse even though it's in the middle of the night. That was on the very short list of games I got 100% simply because I enjoyed so much. I bet the speedrun is really interesting.

I watched a 4-way LttP randomizer race the other day, first one I've seen, and man is that some great entertainment. I wish the agdq race was more than two people.

Also looking forward to the SMW no cape, no star world race. Never watched that speedrun before.

Still haven't managed sub-21 but my average is coming down. Yesterday I got 21:04 and 21:10.

Apparently PlatShadow used to be a regular in calebhart42's chat for a long time. There was a minute when caleb was interested in running joe & mac. I guess PlatShadow tried to hype him up for it, but it didn't stick. It would be awesome if someone with that many followers started running the game again and put a lot of attention on it.

Wizard's first rule spoilers I guess. When Richard uses the wizard's first rule to trick darken rahl into thinking he told him the true solution to the boxes or whatever they were. A new runner just posted a time a few days ago. DeviousTactics. He has some Cuphead runs but no other games. Not sure how dedicated he will be.

I'm curious if he just decided to run the game because it was at the top of the recent runs list on the speedrun.com homepage. It's neat to think I'm making ripples in the speedrunning community after only observing for so long.

think I found my problem in this quote from an old SDA post:

This investigation was sparked by the fact that a recent Mario RPG speedrun of mine was timed as 2:57:09 in realtime with WSplit, but by VirtualDub's timing the run was 2:57:38. That run was recorded with VirtualDub at 29.97 FPS interlaced through a Dazzle. The problem with this is that the NTSC Super Nintendo doesn't output 59.94 progressive/29.97 interlaced, it outputs 60.0988 progressive/30.0494 interlaced.

oops. of course this would be my first PB to not be streamed and archived via twitch

With what you know of the game, how low do you think the record can go? Your sum of your best segments makes it sound like it's currently a total of 20:12. Think it can hope for much lower than an even twenty minutes?

I'm certain sub-20 is possible. I'm fairly confident 19:30 is not.

There's a TAS run on the #2 guy's (heh) twitch profile that's I think 20:14 and it's not totally optimized. I think the only way you could get below 19:30 is the discovery of some level/boss skips or quick kills that are as of yet unknown. There is already a known quick kill technique for two bosses, and there are multiple bosses with similar mechanics about them, so those things may very well exist.

So I'm a little perplexed. Like I said, during my actual run I was late on hitting the last split because I hit the wrong key at first. And the time was 20:59.xx.

When I replayed the video and did the splits again, I'm getting around 21:01.

I recorded it using virtualdub and am currently using VLC media player to play it back. I think it's highly unlikely that I messed up the initial timing of my splits (as in, started the game before started the timer) and I know for a fact I didn't stop the timer too early. Could it be that VLC just isn't playing it back at the same fps it was captured?

I'm not at home to look at stuff right now, and I got fed up with it since I was really tired last night. Hoping someone here might have some insight.

my run is a testament to how far the game is from optimized. first few levels are downright embarrassing. killed it in the end though.

and, sub-21! the record was 21:08. I figured I'd beat the record before I got sub-21, but ended up getting 20:58 or 20:59. Not sure, I was slow on the last split because I recently changed my hotkeys so I hit the wrong button at first.

I already called my 24/7 "emergency" maintenance line and left a message. But based on past experience with them and the fact it's a holiday tomorrow, I'm not confident they will hurry to help.

The Story:

I was using the shower and everything was normal. I suddenly heard a fast, repetitive thud from inside the wall where the plumbing for the shower is. It went from a quick thudding to a slow thudding until it stopped. It sounded like a lawn mower running out of gas.

When the thudding stopped, the water completely stopped coming out of the shower head. It would still work from the tub part, but with abysmal water pressure. Would take about 25 minutes to get a decent amount of water for a bath.

If I don't run the water for a while, then it will work with above average water pressure for several seconds when I first turn it on. Then it stops. When I do this, it isn't a gradual shift from high pressure to low pressure. It's high pressure for X amount of seconds and then it suddenly stops. Like some water is accumulating somewhere. The longer I wait to use it, the longer the water runs.

I fear it's a broken or frozen line? Mainly because that's my only guess because I know nothing else about this. I highly doubt there's anything I can do without the help of maintenence but maybe I'm wrong!
