Yeah, the bonus runs are all announced in advance, and have corresponding times and usually systems to each setup block. So it'll be exactly what char said.

If they had an actual surprise run, it'd have to be after the finale, but I wouldn't count on it.

toy story run was p good would recommend

that strider tutorial was neat. really like the idea and kinda makes me wanna give it a shot. (it also lead to some guy trying it out, finding a new skip, and the current record holder setting a new record using it)

Superman 64...so dumb this was ever released.

I'm buying GDQ clothes for myself for the first time. I got my brother a Silent Hill shirt last time and it turned out well, so this time I'm getting the Dynamite Headdy shirt and Hype hat.

This was the full game though. That one is for where easy mode normally ends which is...like after the fifth level? I forget, but they said it in the marathon.

This is a world record though because the runner found this trick to allow for the full game to be played really recently. And I'm pretty sure she is one of only a couple of people that actually run this game because it is so bad.

Still a fun run though! Bad games work well for speed runs because of how broken they are from the get go.

Even if thats not how she really talks I want the rest of the marathon to have that style of commentary

Like I guess people could find it annoying but its still eighty times better than Saliva-filled mouth jumbling syllables together at 900 words per minute like half of these couch guys do

I like it best when either there's nobody on the couch and the runner does good commentary, or there is one designated person on the couch who does most of the talking.

For the bigger games with more runners, the couch hive mind weirds me out sometimes. I'm mainly thinking of the super Mario sunshine run. It's cool how people can bond so much through running the same game, but sometimes it's just a little unsettling.

I think when there are too many people on the couch they end up just talking for each other instead of for the audience.

Well said, and I agree. I also think there's some effect where since people have spent so much time running the game, they naturally want to talk about it. That's true of any hobby. But many of the couch people lack the awareness to recognize that they aren't the one being showcased. And they just can't keep themselves from talking about the parts of the game they like.

Yep. The people who are going to rise to the top as the culture continues to grow are the ones who have the charisma on top of the speedrunning skills.

I mean, SpikeVegeta definitely has charisma on top of charisma, yet he was one of the people on the couch doing what you said.

I think part of it is that... What can you really say about certain things? Some stuff is just so blatant from watching that it's like... Yeah, I actually would rather hear who came up with it since I might want to check them out, as opposed to "The Jump Skip here is where he jumps to this ledge."

Yeah, I'd personally like someone like SpikeVegeta or BigJon on the couch than someone who is constantly just commenting on the skips. A lot of the time, unless they're doing a tutorial like they did with Strider yesterday, there are too many skips and they're going too fast to properly explain everything. Like, don't ignore the game entirely obviously, but good banter and/or the history of the game is sometimes more fun to hear.

Like in the Super Mario Sunshine run, maybe they didn't explain every skip but they had other interesting things at time instead. "Oh we used to have to use the clouds before the rocket skip was discovered" is actually more interesting to me than "you press this button like this at this time" for every skip, especially in a game I'm not planning on running. And if I was planning to run, almost all of these people have tutorial vids on youtube/twitch that are far more useful than what you'd get in a run.

I actually like a big cough like the Sunshine run. Just personal preference, of course!

Yeah I mean honestly if the commentary doesn't make me physically cringe at any point then I consider it a success. I actually prefer the big couches too and I enjoyed the Sunshine run but sometimes they use a little too much jargon without going in detail.

I mean you finally get in the same room with someone who also speedruns Super Mario Sunshine and I understand the urge to want to talk shop. Listening to people talk about something they're passionate about even without having greater knowledge to appreciate it can be entertaining but I think sometimes they need to strike a better balance.

I did end up saying I liked a lot of the content he gave. It's just something about his personality that clashes with me in a serious way. I have no trouble seeing why he's popular, and he's definitely top 20% as far as commentary. I just personally don't like him.

We're talking about human behavior so there's an incredible amount of subjectivity to it.

Actually, Spike doesn't really portray the negative things I was talking about. He has a very good feel for the audience's perspective and doesn't speak out of turn too often. Nothing compared to the runners who you can clearly tell that being on the couch is the most public spotlight they've ever had. (And there's nothing wrong with that being their peak. I'm just saying spike clearly has stage presence which many couch people lack.)

Like, have you ever been to an open mic night comedy at a comedy club? Or, failing that, have you ever seen a comedian who completely bombed their set in every way imaginable? To the point where the entire audience was uncomfortable?

That's kind of what we get from the couch a lot of the time. In the case of people like SpikeVegeta, it's more like a wildly popular comedian who simply doesn't appeal to my sense of humor at all. Like Dave Chappelle, for example. I'll watch his stand up and only chuckle a couple times. But I don't actively wish I wasn't watching it.
