I loved Season 3. It got off to a slow start, but the last stretch of episodes was pretty fun. I love the comic-booky route it's taking. Works much better than the procedural it started off as.

Season 4 is also looking really good. I just love how the mythology is finally shaping up to look like the Gotham we are familiar with.

It's kinda hard to want to be a kid again when I was aware of the poverty my family faced and was unable to do anything about it.

Sure, I have wonderful childhood memories and that childhood innocence that is lost with adulthood. But day after day I'd see my parents' stress on making enough money for food on the table, and them telling me they couldn't buy me that toy with a broken heart cause they couldn't afford it. I hated that there was nothing I could do to help my family, and I felt guilty for being a drain on their resources (even though they never indicated as such, just my conclusion). I remember thinking this way as early as 4 or 5 years old.

Nowadays I make more than my parents combined and am able to provide for them as well as my own wife and kids. I have much more control over my life and the ability to help those around me, so I wouldn't give that up for anything.

TopicDo you think climate change is real?
Zanzenburger

People who question man's ability to influence climate change should look at the tear in the Ozone layer. Remember the warnings you read about in school back in the 80s and 90s about CFCs and how they were tearing a hole in the Ozone layer, causing increased risks of cancer and such? Well with new environmental regulations and the banning of CFCs, the Ozone layer stabilized in the mid-90s, and has begun to recover since the 2000s. They expect the Ozone to be back to its original levels by 2075. Yes, man caused the hole in the Ozone layer, and it was man that worked to solve the problem.

This is all proof of manmade environmental impacts, and how acting in environmentally-friendly ways have actually helped our planet.

The fact that there are people against environmentally-conscious regulations based on political allegiance is just foolish. Even if you don't believe in climate change (and as a meteorologist, I'd love to have a chat with you), how can you not even consider planet-friendly regulations at the very least for the sake of extending the life of our planet, even if not for man-saving purposes?

So how am I incorrect? I didn't assign my definition to everyone who could fall into the definition but the kind of people who actually use the title of academic. I would expect you at the very least to understand basic definitions if you hope to defend the values of academia.

I guess the part of your argument that I struggle with is that I've never encountered anyone who unironically calls themselves an "academic" or an "intellectual". I've seen academic used more as an adjective for a field, or a group of people, not really as a title for a person.

Professors generally call themselves professors, or sometimes researchers. Even philosophy teachers, which in my opinion fit the closest description to a stereotypical academic, typically just call themselves students of life, or lifelong learners, or just "the annoying guy that questions everything" (had a great philosophy professor once that had that on his business card, lol).

The problem is how professors aren't the kind of people you see going around claiming to be academics and intellectuals.

I feel that my definition of "academic" is different than yours. As COVxy said, people typically describe academics as people who work in academia, such as professors. More broadly, I see it as people whose main goal is to increase their knowledge through research, something most commonly seen in professors at research universities.

If your definition of "academic" is people who assign themselves that title to make themselves sound smarter and intellectual than everyone else, then in that case, yes, academics are arrogant and self-absorbed, because that is inherent in the word's definition.

Well to be fair higher education has a lot of problems these days, and it needs to be criticized in order to improve.

Surely someone who claims to be intellectual and academic would understand the value of constructive criticism.

Faculty and university administrators criticize higher education all the time. It's just that there's really not much one person can do about it. To restructure higher education would require a large enough group of people working together to change things up. Administrators, faculty, legislators, and even the for-profit companies that employ graduates. Unless everyone is willing to play ball, no one is really going to change anything.

How many of you have actually met professors outside of a classroom setting (as in, they weren't your professor?)

Most professors are pretty chill people. They are mostly nerds passionate about the subject they teach, but they're still just nerds.

Those pompous, self-loving prudes you see in those old college movies are a stereotype. In fact, you'll notice that most professors with phd's don't even care about being called "Dr.", and don't ever really bring it up outside a context where it's relevant.

The only people that I see emphasize the "Dr." in their names are people with "honorary" doctorates, people who got their doctorates in diploma mills, or legitimate doctors that have a reason to use the prefix.

But most professors don't pretend they know more than the general public. Sure, they will know more about something (i.e. their specific field of study) than your average person, but not everything. In fact, some of the smartest, most well-known experts in fields that I've talked to tend to be the most humble, and the most willing to say they still really know nothing about the topic of interest, which continually drives their research to learn more.

TopicWhen did colleges and universities become liberal indoctrination centers?

Not long ago people used to go to university to take practical courses that could lead them to meaningful employment.

In modern times, we have most people spending 4 years arguing about policy brutality, getting people locked up in prison for using incorrect gender pronouns, memorizing the communist manifesto and other associated activities.

Not gonna go through six pages of this topic to see if this was said or not, but here:

University was never designed for you to "take practical courses that could lead to meaningful employment".

In fact, university was originally started as learning theory and doctrine for future religious leaders, and was in no way a prerequisite to employment. The original purpose of university was to advance your learning (granted, it was more religiously-oriented then, but still). As more universities started popping up and became more secularized, learning became the fundamental concept that drove them.

It wasn't until after WWII, when a whole slew of veterans, minorities, and women started entering colleges that colleges started marketing themselves as "job training centers".

The fact that they are swinging the pendulum back towards "learning for learning sake" is not new; they are just going back to their roots.

I'm not even going to get into the whole "liberal indoctrination" thing as I think that has been pretty exhausted in this topic.
