This is the opposite of Game Changers - instead of all three idols being sat on for so long, we're getting them played too frequently. Enough is enough. They should have four per season, I'd think. One on each tribe, with one rehidden at the merge if available. But it'd be a cool twist to have no idols - or just one at the merge - and not tell anybody. Also, which beach did they merge to? You have no idea what you're talking about. The "Franchesqua" Tribal is a hysterical trainwreck that's absolutely glorious. Phillip makes for a complex but detestable villain. Survivor is not as great when there's nobody you're rooting against (or for). The first Elrod blindside is great TV, also, and that's where we get our first Andrea GIFs. Who would've thought back then that she'd become a Survivor legend? Zapatera prematurely throwing a challenge to get rid of Russell was one of the most interesting things to happen during the Dark Ages. Russell crying home to Mommy is a hysterical way to end the self-declared god's Survivor career. Redemption Island is quite good early on, but it all falls apart because of exactly what Inviso (who, remember, isolates feelings by episode) stated: "I WILL DO AS YOU SAY MASTER ROB." Once Russell and Kristina Kell are gone, there's zero opposition and we get boring, predictable vote after boring, predictable vote. Except for the second Elrod blindside after he was a nimrod. But like I said, the final 11 onwards being completely unwatchable every minute taints the overall opinion of the season (which is still bottom tier) and its players for many. It does not change how great it started. It does not change how Andrea redeemed herself and has achieved legend status by reaching 100 days in three seasons. It's a very similar trajectory to BB16, starting off with potential and then having one glimmer of hope later, but no, just kidding, that "moment" just made everything worse going forward. And I think Redemption Island is underrated because of how great it started, which people forget about because of how horrific every minute of the final 11 onward was. If things had kept up the quality of the first four episodes, it might've been considered one of the best seasons. BB16 is similar. Imagine if Cody HAD backdoored BMC against Brittany. All hell would break loose, one of the least likable people would be gone (and would never show up on Survivor), and Derrick might actually LOSE. | BlueCrystalTear 12/12/17 8:53:19 PM #259 | Derrick was a phenomenal player but was absolutely dreadful TV. He did everything he could to take out the more interesting or rootable people to avoid drama. That includes Brittany, Donny, Zach (not rootable, but interesting), and Nicole (whom I liked in BB16 way more than in BB18). Meanwhile he kept BMC and Fankie around, alongside his lapdog Cody Calafiore and... one of the most hysterical joke characters they've ever had in Princess Victoria. Fankie is the most insufferable person to ever be on a reality show, in my mind. Yes, he's worse than our President or any of his "pets" who at least had a couple of moments. Fankie was just insufferable every time he was on the screen, made worse by the fact that he thought America loved him until the "overwhelming no" gave him a dose of reality - the only "punishment" he got, which wasn't really game-related. BB9 was still worse with an even less likable cast, a horrible winner, and just... boringness. But BB16, looking back, was just a bad season after week two. All hope of it being interesting ended when Cody C chose not to backdoor BMC. I look back on it and I have nothing positive to say about it after the first two weeks. Truly an excruciating experience. Underleveled posted... As far as survival stuff goes... yeah, Australia or Africa. I lean Africa because they legit had to make a wildlife-proof camp and stay up in shifts to watch for predators... And actually had an encounter. Yeah, that's a good argument for Africa, but in Australia they had the flood and a lot of raw survival stuff going on - they were literally suffering out there. Production created the auction to ensure everybody got food in their bellies because they were dying out there. There's also Skupin's pig hunt, too, and of course him passing out into the fire. You can't go wrong with either. The modern seasons that are brutal survival-wise, like Philippines and Cambodia, still focus more on strategy and can only spend so much time focusing on the dang rain making everybody miserable. Two seasons is more TV time than most shows get. Big Brother is just too long to go back and rewatch in full unless it's one of the god-tier seasons. I could go back and rewatch BB6, BB7, or BB10, but anything else? No thanks. (Darkx, I suggest you watch those three in full, because there are too many highlights to recap properly. Same goes for BB8, which is an extremely polarizing season. Back then, seasons were a little shorter than they are today, too.) I don't even watch Big Brother anymore, btw, because I miss the quality that it delivered back then. Now, they pluck too many schmucks off the streets and it leads to too many showmances and too many bad players. We're through Micronesia by now. Going to start Gabon up in the coming days now that HHH is winding down (we finish up the last season we were watching around when a new one starts, then wait until the current one is winding down before rewatching anything so my dad doesn't get confused). eaedwards6400 posted... And yeah, she was an idiot to give Dr. Mike collateral. She could have used that idol. I also believe this is the first time anyone has been sent home with one vote by way of an idol. But that Tribal was hectic and the buildup to it was crazy. Best episode of the season, even with the reward non-challenge. A 100% luck challenge has no place in Survivor. "Rock draw decides who wins reward" is not good TV. Should have instead been them both picking rocks at the same time, consciously choosing black or white. That is "being in sync." But yeah, LOVED the second half of this episode. Optimistic going forward! GTM posted... I think ashley is beautiful Nice body, beautiful eyes... but her facial structure is ehh. Cause of transition: Hidden Immunity Idols Middle Ages: 13-20. Constantly evolving game with increasingly intense blindsides. Loyalty to 1-2 people was typical. Cause of transition: HvV = the Fall of Rome. Dark Ages: 21-26. Too many "mactor" types. Poor gameplay. Three Pagongings and two additional bad seasons. Only Philippines is any good. Cause of transition: Malcolm Freberg. Big Movez Era: 27-34. Dictated by players making crazy moves to shift the game. No loyalty to anyone. Some moves were reckless. Cause of transition: Era founders Ciera, Tony, and Malcolm leaving in the first four episodes of Game Changers. Gimmicks Era: 35-present: Too much production influence to artificially create drama with twists as opposed to letting players play. We'll see how long this one lasts. Inviso posted... Nicaragua was the last "pure" season. Then we got 5/6 seasons of newbies vs. veterans in a row, 4 of which are widely regarded as terrible. Nicaragua was still a "bad" season, too. By your logic, One World would also be a "pure" season - and it's a better one than Nicaragua, even if only slightly. Also, Kaoh Rong was amazing. Great cast, villains to hate, heroes to root for, unpredictable, and because of the medevacs, we got a bunch of character scenes rather than obnoxious strategy talk. The ending ruined it for me so so much. Three MedEvacs also was no fun. I want to see people making moves and playing the game, not people being pulled undeservingly. BMC was pulled due to production negligence. Joe would not have been pulled in the early seasons, when the medics would have just taken care of the problem. Back in the day, MedEvacs were always in situations where the individual needed to go to a hospital. I know I'm in the minority here, but the horrific finale - including both the stupid "Vote out a juror" twist and the winner - just destroyed it for me after the MedEvacs already made me leery. I like the character scenes as a counterbalance to the mile-a-minute strategy, but not if it's anticlimactically pulling people from the game. It's just an enjoyment thing. When I look back at Kaoh Rong, I see it as a season where the petty villains got their way in the end and the heroine lost. It's better than Game Changers, at least, but can't hold a candle to MvX. Turns out 2017 is the worst year of Survivor/BB since 2011.
