I lived in the us for a while and one of the most surprising things was the slack attitude to drunk driving. It seemed like everyone did it and no one cared. It just seemed culturally acceptable. Even TV was filled with characters driving to bars and driving home again like it was totally normal. I know the country is set up to drive everywhere but with that toxicity in your culture a problem is inevitable. I haven't lived in America for 5 years now but it doesn't seem like much has changed considering your president was trying to dress an nfl player being killed by a drunk driver as an immigration issue just the other week.

It's crazy to me that there has never been a scientific study done in which parents properly explain the reason they are spanking a child when they do it, yet people like you automatically dismiss all forms of spanking as abusive and claim that it has been scientifically proven without a shred of evidence to back up that claim.

I respect what you're saying but your argument is very similar to the one people use to defend communism. Ie 'the idea is right but the implementation is wrong etc.' The problem is that the vast majority of parents who spank their kids don't do so constructively and responsibly and if they did, this could be assumed in the scientific studies and it still wouldn't support spanking.

AUSTIN, Texas The more children are spanked, the more likely they are to defy their parents and to experience increased anti-social behavior, aggression, mental health problems and cognitive difficulties, according to a new meta-analysis of 50 years of research on spanking by experts at The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan.

The study, published in this months Journal of Family Psychology, looks at five decades of research involving over 160,000 children. The researchers say it is the most complete analysis to date of the outcomes associated with spanking, and more specific to the effects of spanking alone than previous papers, which included other types of physical punishment in their analyses.

"But I was spanked and turned out fine"
"Beating =/= spanking. They are probably confusing the two"
"Spanking done right is done with love"
"Hell, I was beaten, my childhood sucked, and I hate my father, but at least I learned how to be an adult"

"Because scientists have never been paid off before"
"Statistics don't truly reflect reality"

kids start jumpng on top of a chair
after telling him stop your are going to hurt yourself

the kid doesnt stop

and the choices are spanking or let him fall and get 2 stiches ( again)

of course id choose spanking

Such a weird line of thinking.

My daughter was literally doing this today. I took her off the chair, sat her in the corner and told her it was dangerous. She didn't do it again. My son was also present and later on I heard him warning his sister about jumping on the chair as she went past it to go into the kitchen. Kids are extremely impressional and as an adult you have a duty as a role model to teach them not only how to behave but also how to approach problems. My parents spanked me until I was about 9 or 10. They stopped when they realised I was hitting my brother and sister when I thought they were misbehaving. Obviously a certain level of discipline is important when raising kids but the physical variety is a one size fits all crutch that sends the wrong message in almost any situation.

Hasnt been 18 shootings here do some homework and dont believe everything you read on the internet

I know what Americas definition of a school shooting is, and America is the one reporting them.

The assertion he is making is that we shouldn't include incidents such as a kid pulling a gun on someone after a personal argument or someone shooting themselves in the parking lot in the same bracket as Nicholas cruz. This is fair to a certain extent. However, what he is very conveniently omitting is that these other examples of people taking guns into schools don't happen in other first world countries either.

Edinburgh isn't in the North of England.

Further, if being condescending to each other seems to be the 'norm' as JE describes, that still doesn't make it okay.

It's not condescending in their culture though. It's seen as endearing and friendly

I have some serious doubts about that. I can only think of two examples when calling someone a pet name like "Honey" or "Sweetie" is not condescending.

- People in relationships together
- You're a 80 year old grandmother talking to a child

Probably because you are culturally ignorant. Go watch some TV set it the north of England or Scotland. Hell, theres a TV show called auf weidersen, pet where the title even pokes fun at geordies' inclination to use terms of endearment. The pr response itself is a clear reference to the fact if you spend any time around that part of the world, you're going to be called something, whether it be honey, pet, lass, man, fella...whatever...

I watch plenty of British movies and TV (even have some British friends) and I still have not seen a scenario where it isn't condescending except in the two instances described above.

Also, there is no reason for you to try to insult me in this discussion. It makes me think that you probably can't recognize when people are being condescending.

how big was UK's airforce in like 1936? Would Germany have been able to just bomb them into submission? A naval invasion would have been impossible. Germany's navy was tiny compared to UKs even when Chamberlain was in charge. Germany possibly could have gotten a few hundred thousand troops to UK but they would have had to supply by air drops since they would have no chance of controlling the channel long term.

It's because of sexism forcing women to be typecast as the nurtering parent who gives up their job to raise the kids. Because women are the ones who actually took time to spend with the kids, of course custody cases favor them.

Maybe don't expect your wife to give up her job/ career for kids if you don't plan to put in a ton of effort to care for them as well.

So then you're saying that both parents should maintain their careers after having children, to maintain equality in the relationship?

Good idea, won't work. If you try that you're going to end up with seriously rotten kids with a ton of issues. Even if you're wealthy enough to afford a full time nanny for the kid, they're still going to have detachment problems growing up from the parents not being around as much as they should.

So obviously giving the kids to the parent with a full time job is a terrible idea.
