THE HILL - UCLA players' release from China secured before Trump got involved: report

"The situation was already resolved by the time we heard about Trump's involvement, one team source claimed to ESPN. That's not to take away from the fact that he got involved, but the players already had their passports back and their flights booked to go home Tuesday night when Gen. Kelly called the players.

Trump took credit for the players' release, wondering in a tweet if the players would say thank you President Trump for securing their release.

The players did thank Trump at a press conference, but ESPNs source said that they just didnt want to get into it with the president.

LiAngelo Ball's father, LaVar Ball, criticized Trump for taking credit for his son and teammates release.

Trump then fired back, saying I should have left them in jail!" The two exchanged insults for days, with Trump also calling Ball an ungrateful fool and a poor mans version of Don King.

TALKING POINTS MEMO - Scott Walker Refusing To Hold Elections GOP Might Lose

In a remarkable break from precedent, Walker announced at the time that he would not hold special elections in those districts, leaving 229,904 Wisconsinites without representation for almost a year.

Walkers office has said its not worth the cost or effort to hold the votes, since regular congressional races will take place in November. But Democrats and their allies say Walker is just scared to lose.

This is about them not wanting to be embarrassed by losing races in districts they have traditionally won, Wisconsin Democratic strategist Sachin Chheda told TPM. Everybody knows it, and I think its embarrassing that theyd make a decision on that basis rather than the small d democratic tenets of giving people the right to choose their own representative.

Walker isnt alone. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is likewise waiting until the November election to replace departed congressman John Conyers, forcing the Detroit districts mostly minority residents to go 11 months without representation in Congress. In Florida, Gov. Rick Scott wont hold any special elections for two open Florida seats. And after Democrat Doug Jones stunning Senate victory in December, the GOP-controlled Alabama House approved a bill that would scrap special elections for the states U.S. Senate seats, allowing the governor to appoint an interim replacement instead. That bill is currently before a Senate committee.

Of the 19 GOP held districts, Democrats lead in 15 of them, are tied in another, and trail slightly in 3 of them. Democrats are up in GOP held districts even in places like Kansas and Kentucky.

That's the highest generic-party-candidate lead I've seen before, and it looks like in individual districts with actual politicians that kind of lead is staying consistent. BUSINESS INSIDER - Tillerson and Mattis are reportedly trying to hold Trump back from striking North Korea

Both The Telegraph and The Wall Street Journal have portrayed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis as trying to caution President Donald Trump against a strike, and the national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, as advocating it.

The reports come after months of mixed messages and dozens of shifts in the US's stance on North Korea.

The bloody-nose strategy, which calls for a sharp, violent response to some North Korean provocation, puts a lot of weight on the US's properly calibrating an attack on North Korea and Pyongyang's reading the limited strike as anything other than the opening salvo of an all-out war.

I guess I'm also not clear when these teachers are supposed to get their training in. Are these 3+ full-time weeks of training supposed to happen in the summer. at night after classes, on weekends during the semester...?

Does a teacher get to keep their stipend if they decide they don't like carrying their gun to school? Say after a year? Two years? Five? Like, they do this service awhile so they should be paid...but can they stop if at any point they decide they see too many negative changes in surrounding behaviors and decide it's not worth continuing? If so, do they pay back the school/state or do they keep their money for ever taking on that responsibility for a period of time?

(allowing teachers to be armed at school is a bad idea in my book anyway, but if this is happening let's talk about it)

THINKPROGRESS - NRA refuses to answer senators questions about funding from Russia

Earlier this month, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) issued a pair of letters demanding information on any financial links between the NRA and Moscow, or between the NRA and Russian nationals. The questions came after McClatchy reported that the FBI was investigating whether Alexander Torshin a Russian national who happens to be an NRA member, as well as the NRAs main liaison in Russia had used the NRA to funnel funds to Donald Trumps presidential campaign. Torshin, described by The Daily Beast as a Putin ally, has a history of laundering Russian money in Europe, according to Spanish investigators.

Instead of answering Wydens request, however, the NRA issued a terse letter denying that it received any funds from Moscow specifically designed to influence the election.

As a longstanding policy to comply with federal election law, the NRA and its related entities do not accept funds from foreign persons or entities in connection with United States elections, NRA secretary and general counsel John Frazer wrote to Wyden. Frazer added that the FBI has not contacted the NRA, and that McClatchys coverage refers to an investigation of Mr. Torshin not of the NRA.

I'm seeing headlines about Donald announcing his 2020 campaign...what?

Can't look into them yet, but I know Donald applied with the FEC to be a candidate last year on the day of his inauguration. I think this is over a year earlier than the next earliest reelection bid too -- Obama in about April 2011.

Is the advantage here campaign funding (in a way he wasn't already getting from the FEC as mentioned above), shutting down primary challengers, dominating the news cycle, show of strength...? I don't get it.

Kind of a history/religion question, but have we had anybody on a Presidential ticket as religiously driven as Mike Pence in recent years? Just people nominated to be President and VP, not necessarily counting lesser candidates like Rick Santorum but if there's somebody noteworthy there that's cool too.

I feel confident we have, and my first guess running backwards in our timeline is Jimmy Carter...but I don't actually know that kind of religious history well (or history in general, rabble rabble).

VOX - Russia hacked the Olympics and tried to make it look like North Korea did it

Russian military spies hacked hundreds of computers at the 2018 Olympic Games in South Korea and tried to make it look like North Korea was the culprit, according to a new report. It is likely retaliation against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for banning the Russian team from Olympics because of a widespread doping scheme it used to cheat in previous competitions.

The Washington Posts Ellen Nakashima reported on Saturday evening that the GRU, Russias military intelligence agency, accessed as many as 300 Olympics-related computers earlier this month, according to two US officials. To cover their tracks, and to pin any suspicions on North Korea, the hackers used North Korean IP addresses, among other tactics.

Officials in Pyeongchang had already acknowledged that the Winter Games were hit by a cyber attack during the February 9 opening ceremonies but hadnt said who did it. That night, there were disruptions on the internet, broadcast systems, and the Olympics websites. Per the Post, many attendees werent able to print their tickets for the event, which left seats empty.

I've wondered. She had one moment of feared violence (knife-bit), where I then told her to get lost. I don't quite think last night was enough to get a restraining order since then...? She's walking a fine line though between being an asshole and trying to be whatever friendly gestures she thinks these might look like.

She knows what I said. She's crossing boundaries I asked her not to cross again and there's been a common thread in our meetings of trying to isolate me with the use of vehicles, so maybe...just hard to say when it's truly next-level drama.

If you missed last month's talk about this lady: a woman I met three times kept trying to figure out where I live, wanted constant contact, and put a knife in my hand after asking me if she scared me. There's more, but that's the gist of my issues before I told her I don't want any contact anymore.

Anyway, I had previously guided her to two theatre companies I work with and she's been cast in both since then. This topic's about the conclusion of our separate shows tonight in the first company's festival.

We had seen each others' shows we acted in for this festival, no harm there at all.

Tonight was closing for each of our plays in the festival so there was a group dinner afterward. I got there before she did and by the time she arrived there were only two seats available...two empty seats to my right, and she picked the one closest to me.

She asked me if I wanted to go to her car to pick up a friend's CD he once made, and I had no idea what she was talking about. Apparantly we talked about his CD before? She led off with this and I said later.

She also asked me to come to a comedy show she hosts after dinner, and I said I was staying with a friend she met the last time we were together. She then texts my friend to invite us both to her show. I told her I would text him, and she asked if I was gonna tell him not to come to her show. I said whatever and she got mad I whatever'd her.

She asked me where I was parked as I was leaving and I pointed to one side of the street...but I was walking another friend to his car who knew not to leave me alone with her. As I turned the other way out, I know she saw me go that other way because she brought out my umbrella I left under the table. Whoops. Legit-thankful she gave me the umbrella back, but she probably thinks I lied to her now. I didn't, so she better not build a temper against me over this.

I've warned some of my closest theatre friends about her since dinner tonight to be aware of our situation, to not leave me alone with her, and to not talk to her about me. It sounds like she's having an awkward start making friends with this first company anyway -- a bad joke about jealousy, some other little stuff that makes for tough first impressions -- but no one else I talked to had anything like my experience yet so at least that.

I'm not talking to the second company yet about this clingy stalky lady...trying not to talk shit just for gossip in this community she's about to join, but she still doesn't seem to care about me previously asking her to leave me alone. She's cognizant of me telling her to stop too, or she wouldn't have made that comment about texting my friend.

She needs to stop. Blah.

I think at this point Manafort's waiting on a pardon, which sucks because he seems to be such a crucial piece of this puzzle. That said, I don't think he can escape state charges with a federal pardon and I understand he'd have to accept guilt and cooperate to get the pardon to work anyway, so maybe hope is not lost there. I'm sure Mueller is working on other angles in the meanwhile.
