As cool as it would be to explore a 1:1 scale of Los Angeles in the game, I don't think it would be enjoyable spending hours getting from point A to point B. Not to mention could you imagine LA with realistic traffic in a game? It doesn't matter how fast the car you steal goes, you're not going anywhere fast

Pretty much. If I wanted to drive around a realistically-sized city, I'd hop in my car. Putting that kind of realism into a game just gets in the way of playing it.

Whoa there. Birth control is also for men. It may be women that end up physically receiving it, but those women's partners get to reap all the same benefits that the women do (at least as far as using it as birth control goes, and ignoring the therapeutic applications of BC pills and hormonal IUD's). Painting subsidized birth control as "women getting something that men don't" is ignoring the fundamental purpose of birth control (that is, to let men and women have sex with each other without making a baby, which both parties enjoy unless one of them is really bad at it).

Been a bit out of the loop with gaming industry news, but what model exactly?

Pretty much eschewing everything about the games that got them where they are, focusing instead on crappy mobile games and gambling machines (pachinko, slots) branded with their popular IP's. The closest thing they've done to a legitimate game is Metal Gear Survive, which was possibly the least original premise imaginable (and zombie survival games aren't even currently in vogue, so they were late to that party), and they stuffed it with some of the more egregious monetization practices around (namely charging $10 for a second save slot in a class-based game). Plus other various dickery.

Basically, they've stopped making the games their fans actually want in favour of using those IP's for absurd get-rich-quick schemes.

The archetypal ARPG would be Diablo.

Also, MH definitely qualifies as having heavy RPG elements, given that the entire game revolves around the idea of incremental upgrades and character customization. It's not story-heavy, but that's about the only thing that it's missing.

I like how that entire list didn't include the term "role-playing" once

You can "role-play" in any game. Jumping up and down in my living room while shouting "bing bing whahoo!" doesn't turn Super Mario Odyssey into an RPG.

While true, it's still pretty funny that defining "role-playing game" didn't include the concept of role playing at all. I feel like that should really make you question what you're prioritizing in putting that definition together.

The way I see it, RPG isn't a genre. There are a number of game mechanics and design elements that can be considered "RPG elements," including character (and/or party) customization, character progression, variable stats, and meaningful player influence on how the story plays out, but elements like those show up in so many wildly different games that trying to call RPG's a genre of their own is a futile exercise in drawing arbitrary highly-specific lines (numerical damage display? Seriously?). Many, many games include some degree of character progression and customization these days.

To that end, I prefer to look at it as a matter of how significant a game's RPG elements are. Zelda has RPG elements (namely equipment and stat progression, plus your choice of regularly-used items). However, those RPG elements are lighter than what you'd see in, say, Elder Scrolls, where you have a much greater degree of control over how your character develops, as well as a greater ability to choose how you want the world to unfold. Ergo, Zelda has light RPG elements, Elder Scrolls has heavy RPG elements.

As does Grand Theft Auto, again, not an RPG.

San Andreas has stats that you can level up, I think.

Doom 2017 does too.

An RPG requires all of the following in my mind to be considered as such: an exp system, displayed numerical damage, some sort of structured battle system, management of magic/skill bars, a heavy emphasis on story and narrative, focus on revolving door equipment, and in 99% of cases, a party of characters.
