What is Trumps desired outcome

"Fuck you, I do what I want."
No, literally, that's all this is.

that is definitely part of it.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/01/upshot/trump-tariff-steel-aluminum-explain.html

So does this matter for the economy?
The American economy is relatively strong at the moment, and has been historically resilient to most disruptions. Companies are good at restructuring their supply chains to minimize disruption because of tariffs like these. In most retrospective analyses, the 2002 Bush administration steel tariffs have been judged to be costly relative to the jobs that were saved, but they were hardly the cause of some economic disaster.

This action may create some jobs in domestic metals-producing industries, cost some jobs in fields where steel and aluminum are inputs, and push consumer prices a bit higher. The large and dynamic United States economy can handle it.

The risk comes from the potential ripple effects.

Affected countries may well retaliate by ordering tariffs on American goods, and they could carefully target goods to cause economic or political pain. American exporters whether they sell passenger airplanes or soybeans should be nervous about the next shoe to fall. There are few winners in an all-out trade war like one that enveloped the world economy in the 1930s.

In particular, the Trump administrations invocation of national security concerns could set a precedent in which China and other nations are willing to use national security as grounds for tariffs, hurting the ability of the World Trade Organization to arbitrate disputes.

The real risk isnt that steel and aluminum are a bit more expensive, though that is likely to be the case. Its that an entire system of global trade, which the United States helped build, might be undermined.

trump's stated goal is to benefit manufacturers at the cost of consumers and industries that use them and he's using national security as an excuse to do so. trade war is the biggest threat and a likely outcome if this happens.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/07/heres-how-congress-can-stop-trumps-tariffs--if-lawmakers-want-to.html

Congress has the constitutional right to regulate trade between the U.S. and foreign nations. But the law being applied here gives the executive branch a significant upper hand against the legislature, which has little recourse to challenge Trump's wishes for a more protectionist trade policy.

If Congress does want to stop the tariffs, it has essentially one option, the Council on Foreign Relations' Alden said: pass a measure with a veto-proof majority that either overturns the action or strips Trump of his authority to impose it.

But Alden said it's highly unlikely. "I would be astonished" if Republicans in Congress banded together with Democrats "to rescind a core policy of the president," he said.

The White House said it will follow through on the proposal by the end of this week, although it allowed itself some space to potentially blunt the severity of the taxes for Canada and Mexico "based on national security."

would republicans be willing to avert the crisis by going against Trump, though. i doubt it as well, but if they are going to defy him on anything it would and should be this.

https://elpais.com/elpais/2018/03/06/inenglish/1520329317_212718.html

According to the report, the attack occurred in an establishment in Mstoles, a city in the Madrid region, at around 7am. The actor, known by his stage name Elton Prince, approached the counter with his friends to order coffee when a woman, accompanied by a man, said to him: I dont want black people in this place or in front of me.

According to Makons Facebook post about the incident, he replied: No Miss, I will only be here for a moment and then Im leaving. I dont have any interest in staying near you for long. The 33-year-old woman, who is from El Salvador, then allegedly replied: I dont care, you black piece of shit, get out of here. He said: Calm down Miss, I insist, we are in a public place and I dont understand your anger.

Black piece of shit, Im white. I can kill you and nothing will happen, she said, before grabbing a beer bottle and smashing it against the actors head. She hit him a second time, causing a cut to his head among other injuries, which required medical attention.

Whats funny is that before hitting me with the bottle she said to me, Im white and we are in Spain. I can kill you and nothing will happen to me. The truth is nothing has happened to her, he added. After being identified she has gone home, while I have gone to mine with seven stitches. Now the problem is in the hands of the law. The law will decide on the sentence.

well, i guess she was half-right. i'm not sure if they'd be willing to extradite her to face charges for assault or attempted murder. he sounds like a stand-up guy with nerves of steel given how he reacted to her comments.

Just saying if you don't know already but iirc most self-identified 'Buddhists' in Asia just consider themselves lay people and should be distinguished from the actual Buddhist monks up in the monasteries and such who practice austerities and go outside the temples seeking alms/donations. Most ordinary Buddhists just contribute by giving these monks food/charity. It's actually not terribly different than how Catholicism used to operate in Europe - the ordinary village folk wouldn't have even been able to understand the church services they went to since a regular person wasn't privy to going to school and learning Latin...and they were likely to be illiterate either way. The priests on the other hand were the actual practicing Catholics expected to read and understand the Bible etc.

that makes sense. monks participating would be pretty strange. they're basically fair weather christians. i wonder, though. does that mean they don't actually care about any perceived offenses committed against buddhism by muslims and are just using it as an excuse to attack them?

it sounds like this is a case of "you're different from me so I want you gone and I'll use any reason to do it".

I dont know about terrorism, but Buddhists committing violence has been going on for at least a few decades. I mean those Myanmar/Burma soldiers are mostly Buddhist and theyre hammering the Muslim Rohingya people. (I dont think they admit to it officially, but reality is what it is.)

reading about buddhists doing this is just so weird. i guess in the western world the image of the peaceful buddhist has been drilled in so much that i didn't realize they could be extremists, too. with how much they hate them, you would think that they'd resist committing the same actions extremist muslims are known to do.

Mobs made up mostly of Sri Lanka's predominately Buddhist Sinhalese majority torched Muslim homes and businesses in the island-nation's central hills near Kandy, a day after the government imposed a state of emergency to quell days of violence.

As NPR's Julie McCarthy reports tensions between the two communities, which burst into open hostility on Sunday, have been growing in recent months, with hardline Buddhist groups accusing Muslims of forcing people to convert to Islam.

According to Reuters, Muslims have also been targeted for allegedly vandalizing Buddhist archaeological sites and some Buddhist nationalists have "protested against the presence in Sri Lanka of Muslim Rohingya asylum seekers from mostly Buddhist Myanmar, where Buddhist nationalism has also been on the rise," the news agency writes.

The Mississippi state Senate has passed a bill that would ban abortions after 15 weeks - a move that would give it the strictest limits in the US.

The Gestational Age Act still has to go back to the House for second approval.

If it passes, Governor Phil Bryant has said he will sign the measure into law, adding that he wants Mississippi to be "the safest place in America for an unborn child."

Similar moves in other states have been blocked by legal challenges.

Currently, Mississippi prohibits abortions from 20 weeks, unless her life is in danger or in cases of fatal foetal abnormality.

The new proposal would move that forward five weeks, and makes no allowances for rape or incest for later terminations.

It has already passed in the state House of Representatives, but has to return for secondary approval before being approved by Governor Bryant.

Russian President Vladimir Putin lavished praise on President Donald Trump, but added that he was sorely disappointed with the U.S. political system, saying that it has been eating itself up.

Speaking in a series of interviews with Russian state television which were included in a documentary released Wednesday, Putin described Trump as a great communicator.

I have no disappointment at all, Putin said when asked about the U.S. president. Moreover, on a personal level he made a very good impression on me.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of international summits last year. Putin praised Trump as a balanced man, who easily gets into the gist of various issues and listens to his interlocutor.
Its possible to negotiate with him, to search for compromises, Putin added.

Venting his frustration with the U.S. political system, Putin said it has demonstrated its inefficiency and has been eating itself up.

Its quite difficult to interact with such a system, because its unpredictable, Putin said.

i'm sure he feels good knowing how proud Putin is of him.

https://www.vox.com/mischiefs-of-faction/2018/3/2/17070550/maverick-candidate-republican-party

When Mitt Romney announced that he was running for a Utah Senate seat, various corners of the anti-Trump internet gurgled with anticipation that Romney might be a source of conservative opposition to the president in Congress. Earlier this week, it looked like Romney might be having his first run-in with hardliners in the party over access to the Utah ballot.

The Utah GOP controversy (described here https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/02/romney-utah/554282/ in detail by McKay Coppins) seems to have faded off, but the question posed by political scientist Corrine McConnaughy is still relevant: Will we see a showdown between Romney (or some other rogue Republican) and the Trump administration, reminiscent of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Tafts clash over the 1912 nomination?

The main source of noise about an internal challenge in 2020 has come not from Romney but from John Kasich, Ohios governor and Trumps unlikely rival deep into 2016. If another Republican followed the TR path, first challenging Trump for the Republican nod and then splitting off to run separately, a strong possibility is that these two candidates will split the right-leaning vote and a Democrat will become president.

This would be, of course, good news for Democrats but especially poor news for mainstream conservative Republicans. After a term or two of the other party, theres likely to be political demand for a more distinct alternative. After eight years of a Woodrow Wilson presidency including his handling of US involvement in World War I the political demand was for a more conservative alternative, found in the form of Warren G. Harding. The Republican Party in the 1920s moved in the opposite direction from where Roosevelt was trying to take it in 1912.

republicans are imploding and are single-handedly going to cost themselves 2020.

http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-watches-tv-fox-news-calls-republicans-2018-2

After one of freshman Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz's first appearances on cable news, he got a call from someone offering some advice.

"Don't let people talk over you," President Donald Trump told Gaetz, the congressman recalled in a recent interview.

From one of his biggest fans, Gaetz has received compliments on a new haircut, backup on an argument, or pointers on his presence.

"He did make mention of the fact that he thought I had found a calling in television, which is high praise from someone who found a calling in television," Gaetz told Business Insider.

Gaetz was one of four Republican members of Congress who told Business Insider that Trump often likes to give them a call moments after they appear on cable news.

Republican Sen. David Perdue of Georgia also told Business Insider that Trump likes to give him a call following a TV appearance.

For Perdue, it extends beyond television as well. In a New York Times article last year, Perdue compared Trump to former United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston Churchill, saying that like the legendary leader from World War II, Trump is "nobody's choir boy" and "is a historic person of destiny at a time and place in America when we've got to make a right-hand turn here."

"And so he saw that New York Times article - he called me up and said, 'So you think I'm like Churchill?'" Perdue said. "He didn't think that was a compliment."
