I disagree on that. If he's being totally honest then it's not smart...he's just being himself and that's the reaction that he just so happens to get from spreading his message. If he's a troll well then it's not like it's next level trolling. This divisive conversation has been going on for like a decade now. Just say shit that's dead wrong and all the people who know their shit will feel inclined to educate. That's where we are now. Dumbasses vs people who care and need to educate to save us. i guess. a psychological profile of his personality type would be really interesting, but i'm almost certain he doesn't act like this outside of the internet. also what you say does make sense, since people more or less ignore posters like Bluemonk entirely, and he very much exhibits a similar level of frustrating behaviour.

well, consider that it was fighting aliens that were roughly planetary in size, so it had to be proportional to them... also I guess a technical reason is that the machinery was so complex that it couldn't be super compacted

Edit: maybe the aliens weren't individually that large, but i mean in terms of total mass

I didn't mean to imply that I think things and people exist specifically for me, I just want more out of life than I have. That includes having friends and relationships is all. As it is now, I don't have anything that enriches my life, just distractions to pass the time.

I don't want to get too didactic with you. BUT maybe you are just ignoring other things that might actually be able to enrich your life for being too concerned with things that seem like they are the most important things. For the longest time I ignored going for walks because I thought it wouldn't do anything for me, but then I actually tried it and while the benefit wasn't massive, it definitely showed its own value to me. I accepted that not everything has to be a life-changing event that confers the best possible experience.

If you want more out of life, you can easily get it, but if you decide that the things that are available to you aren't what enrich your life, you're only left with things that may or may not be consistently available.

aaaaaaand this post ended up being more preachy than it should have been. hopefully one day you find your way.

@MorningRose I find that having a healthy hobby that you can make progress in is very therapeutic (video games don't really count because once the game ends you have nothing to show for it). Obviously, if you're depressed, though, actually maintaining the hobby is going to be a challenge. Maybe you can start an activity with your boyfriend that you can also do on your own time, that way you'll be motivated to make progress in it.

idk what caused it but about two hours ago i started feeling really depressed...

also last night i remembered something mildly frustrating: when i was in grade school they used to hand out envelopes to the high performing kids to let them know they would be getting awards. one day i got an envelope and was psyched, despite being a terrible student. so i told my parents and they came to the ceremony. my name was never called to go up to get an award, which was kind of sad.

turns out the award was literally just a "is a good sport" or something like that but for whatever reason they didn't end up giving it that year. my teacher made one on a computer and gave it to me after the ceremony, but that wasn't really much better. the worst part is they actually did make it into an award the next year.

i think that is why i am so obsessed with being recognized as intelligent or whatever, obviously not the only factor but yeah.

I mean, it's hardly rocket science that things like a really good memory or social confidence are going to improve your academic and employment options.

how do you feel about a decisive shift in the cultural landscape from having a debate about nature/nurture, to being convinced that things are mostly nature?

even if you don't find the study to be new knowledge or what have you, the wider point is that scientific confirmation of things like these affects social policies and cultural norms, which can't just be based in what is "hardly rocket science".

Which long-term consequences?

i just assume you will deny all of these but here goes:

- Stratification which leads to social unrest
- Environmental (broad)
- TNCs are less susceptible to state control, which is not bad in itself, but is bad when states are supposed to be the primary actors (although there are arguments that IT infrastructure is now the primary social actor so this is a long road to go down)

edit: fwiw the only hardline pro-capitalist i talk to about this stuff also thinks globalization is bad
